PS. I'm very interested to read the liner notes. All that technical stuff excites me! And I must know how the confusion came about that Marlene mentions above. Like her, I never believed it either. Yeah, even Randy Thornton admits to have been confused. At magicmusic.net he talks about it... I cannot wait to read his notes. Despite his earlier error he must be congratulated for making it possible: I’ve been working to get this soundtrack out for quite some time, even alluding to it here on posts dating back to 2008 and earlier. You may remember a post I made back in 2006 explaining the reasons (as I understood them at the time) of why I was only releasing the original album master of The Black Hole – and then, only as a digital download. But sometimes, if you bang your head against a wall long enough, you can defeat that windmill! And now, the wait is over. This is the complete soundtrack – remixed and mastered from the original 3M 32 track digital multi-tracks. I know information about these tapes has been confusing (believe me!) and many legends have sprung up about their condition, playability, or if they even still existed. But all is explained in my Producer Notes in the booklet.

Good point. The length of "The Laser" on the original LP doesn't match up to either length on the Intrada either: 1. Overture (02:26) 2. Main Title (01:44) 3. The Door Opens (03:35) 4. Zero Gravity (05:43) 5. Six Robots (01:56) 6. Durant Is Dead (02:29) 7. Start The Countdown (03:45) 8. Laser (02:13) 9. Into The Hole (04:52) 10. End Title (02:31)

Sounds much better than the LP as I remember it. All the familiar Barry shtick is certainly there, but the samples reinforce my previous impression that the main theme is the only truly memorable element of this score. The suspense music is often abysmally thin and repetitive, which, unfortunately, is also a Barry trademark. Did not remember that the brass played the Overture so badly. I'm surprised Barry allowed that cut to be printed.

FanTAStic! Anyone who has the album know if the Intrada tracklisting allows for a sequencing that matches the album, or are some of those cues now different?

Anyone who has the album know if the Intrada tracklisting allows for a sequencing that matches the album, or are some of those cues now different? The cues "The Door Opens" and "Laser" are a bit longer than their album counterparts. In the former case, you can hear the album track fade in while the performance is in progress. And, of course, the Intrada edition is a different (but clearer) sound mix. So you can get a rough version of the album program that would be longer than the LP by about a minute or so without those edits by programming the Intrada disc.

Josh, I agree. The LP now sounds sludgy, when compared compared to those samples. The samples sound much brighter, dynamic and more detailed. I always enthused about The Black Hole of course, but also had my reservations about it's true place in Barry's canon. Hearing how much more 'alive' the music sounds in these samples, I'm now much more inclined and enthusiastic to call it a 'classic' score. Well, 2011 was the year we lost John Barry but in concerts and CD releases it's also been a year of great tribute to him. Cheers

Ordered. Wow, so many of my old grail STs have been whittled down in the last few years -- Star Trek 2 & 3, Black Hole, Conan (soon I hope) etc. In other news, I hereby nominate BLADE RUNNER as the official "2 or 3 per week running concurrently thread" subject for FSM since BH is now out.

YOR just heard the sound samples in the Intrada site and was impressed by the power and clarity of the clips! Marvelous job!
