Ms Wong just winged her way across the Atlantic and now I am being wowed by George Duning's music which I have not heard for quite some time! And this is a superb sounding recording...well done, yet again, Bruce!

As promised, I am now listening to the score, after business hours, so I can enjoy Duning's writing in this score. Great stuff here and to hear. smile Thanks again Bruce for another fine release.

I would just like to add my thanks to Bruce & Nancy for this wonderful release. The music is great and to have a signed copy is simply wonderful.

I now look forward to Too Late Blues.

Just got my copy. Great sound -- gorgeous melodies -- one of the best presentations ever of a Duning score. I hope we will eventually get this composer's 3:10 to Yuma on CD.

A killer disk - as was to be expected smile Can't get enought of it, but - and there's a big BUT...

We're being told to keep away from the shoddy sounding RCA disk, yet I have to question some of the mastering choices on the Kritzerland disk. Sorry Bruce, I don't want to sound rude, but I see some of the high end has gone in favor of noise reduction. There's nothing wrong with a 50+ year old recording having some (natural) tape hiss - as can be heard on the RCA CD. Hiss reduction will inevitably kill some musical content as well. Could this been considered on future releases.

Again, I don't want to be impudent; please consider it as constructive criticism. My thanks go to all people who release all this great music. Yet again, I see how many historical recordings have been destroyed by one of our special friends at Capitol. And there's the risk that it will last for eternity, as these recordings may never get the chance again...

With all due respect, you can't compare this with RCA Spain - the RCA Spain CD is many generations away from even the album master, let alone the three-tracks - there was no high end taken away, there was just less hiss as there always is when you're first generation. Nothing was done in the mastering to compromise the high end - I simply would never allow it. The magic that was done was done by Chris Malone, who took a recording that was made too hot when it was going down, which resulted in terrible distortion, which you can hear all over not only the RCA Spain CD but the original LP AND the film itself. Chris worked some real magic to lessen that, again never compromising the high end.

I’m not sure what the source of the RCA Spain CD was but suspect it to be several generations away from the first generation tapes. The original three-track RCA tapes we worked with had an exceptionally low noise floor. I did not use any digital noise reduction on them.

Cheers
Chris

Posts that cross in the night. Shicorp is a good guy, but I hope he reads your post and mine and understands how wrong it is to compare this release to a fourth generation CD. Of course there's a ton more hiss on that - and that is NOT a good thing. Most of the three-track Paramount tapes have very little hiss - they are quite natural and beautiful in that regard.

Hello Bruce and Chris,

many thanks for taking the time to answer my query.

Point taken. Chris has written that he has used no DNR - and that's the way it should be smile

Please accept my apologies for my odd posting. Maybe a public forum isn't the perfect place for this kind of discussion, anyway.

No problem at all and no need to apologize - a public forum IS the place to discuss - you had a legitimate concern just as we had the answers you were looking for to assuage that concern.

... but I see some of the high end has gone in favor of noise reduction. .

Something to consider, shicorp, is that the additional hiss on the RCA Spain CD has the psycho-acoustic effect of making you think that there is more high-end in the recording than there actually is.

The Kritzerland CD is far superior to the RCA Spain in quality and content. This has become my favourite Duning album.

You can read all about Chris Malone's efforts for this release (scroll to the bottom):

Very much enjoying a renewed exposure to THE WORLD OF SUZIE WONG. Audio is another world to my previous Spanish RCA edition, it is splendid, making it that much easier to fully engage in the performance of Duning's work.

Thanks for Chris Malone's article. I would probably prefer to have the "stage noises and bumps from percussionists transferring between instruments" left in, but that is personal taste and I don't know how intrusive they were.

SUZIE sparks with Duning energy flowing through the occidental orient. The mambo and jazzier elements bring on the spice.

I'm grateful Kritzerland is also a champion of Duning! DEAR BRIGETTE, WHO'S GOT THE ACTION and now SUZIE WONG.

I only recently acquired (slow to know) the latest edition of PINIC from Vocalion, also a beauty rescued from brittle audio of the precious MCA digital edition.

I hoping for many more Duning treasures in the future, I'm believe they are out there.

I just can't believe that this disc hasn't sold out yet? There must be too few Duning fans for such a great Golden Age film score as this to be unable to sell a thousand copies. I completely agree that "Suzie Wong is one of Duning’s finest achievements". Thanks to all at Kritzerland for this enjoyable release. The film is a thoroughly enjoyable watch too!

The warm weather is arriving, and I am starting to mix vintage rum cocktails on the weekends. This album goes great with a Mr. Bali Hai or Shark's Tooth!

Love this album!

Angelillo.....I think that it may be only available in the US - it is there- I just doublechecked. I know I cannot see most of the films at the UK Paramount on youtube.
