A killer disk - as was to be expected Can't get enought of it, but - and there's a big BUT... We're being told to keep away from the shoddy sounding RCA disk, yet I have to question some of the mastering choices on the Kritzerland disk. Sorry Bruce, I don't want to sound rude, but I see some of the high end has gone in favor of noise reduction. There's nothing wrong with a 50+ year old recording having some (natural) tape hiss - as can be heard on the RCA CD. Hiss reduction will inevitably kill some musical content as well. Could this been considered on future releases. Again, I don't want to be impudent; please consider it as constructive criticism. My thanks go to all people who release all this great music. Yet again, I see how many historical recordings have been destroyed by one of our special friends at Capitol. And there's the risk that it will last for eternity, as these recordings may never get the chance again... With all due respect, you can't compare this with RCA Spain - the RCA Spain CD is many generations away from even the album master, let alone the three-tracks - there was no high end taken away, there was just less hiss as there always is when you're first generation. Nothing was done in the mastering to compromise the high end - I simply would never allow it. The magic that was done was done by Chris Malone, who took a recording that was made too hot when it was going down, which resulted in terrible distortion, which you can hear all over not only the RCA Spain CD but the original LP AND the film itself. Chris worked some real magic to lessen that, again never compromising the high end.

I’m not sure what the source of the RCA Spain CD was but suspect it to be several generations away from the first generation tapes. The original three-track RCA tapes we worked with had an exceptionally low noise floor. I did not use any digital noise reduction on them. Cheers Chris

Shicorp is a good guy, but I hope he reads your post and mine and understands how wrong it is to compare this release to a fourth generation CD. Of course there's a ton more hiss on that - and that is NOT a good thing. Most of the three-track Paramount tapes have very little hiss - they are quite natural and beautiful in that regard.

Hello Bruce and Chris, many thanks for taking the time to answer my query. Point taken. Chris has written that he has used no DNR - and that's the way it should be Please accept my apologies for my odd posting. Maybe a public forum isn't the perfect place for this kind of discussion, anyway. No problem at all and no need to apologize - a public forum IS the place to discuss - you had a legitimate concern just as we had the answers you were looking for to assuage that concern.

... but I see some of the high end has gone in favor of noise reduction. . Something to consider, shicorp, is that the additional hiss on the RCA Spain CD has the psycho-acoustic effect of making you think that there is more high-end in the recording than there actually is. The Kritzerland CD is far superior to the RCA Spain in quality and content. This has become my favourite Duning album. The warm weather is arriving, and I am starting to mix vintage rum cocktails on the weekends. This album goes great with a Mr. Bali Hai or Shark's Tooth! Love this album! Same here! Good call!
