  • It's official now - MGM for sale :

Please don't let Disney purchase this.

The sale would only be for a company that owns half the rights to the copyright company Danjaq Inc., and the distribution rights. The Broccolis own the other half of Danjaq. And Danjaq has a deal for the Broccoli-company Eon Productions Ltd. to make the films. Eon has prime creative control, although the distributor has some power too. So the sale will not exactly be like Lucas selling his company. The Broccolis still reign!

Saying that, I would not dread a Broccoli exit. From what I gather, Barbara Broccoli is more interested in making indie films these days, and Michael G. Wilson is taking the back seat. Broccoli has diluted the Bond formula in order to update Bond, and it frankly loses a lot of its charm. It makes money, of course, but I guess Bond makes money in every version presented to the public. But there is a "lost" generation soon, who never knew the Bonds of yesteryear, the formula that kept it alive. It can end up just like another action film. I don't think a Disney-owned Bond would do that, pamper too much to the indie crowd, the critics and revert to the old Bond. Disney might go down the Star Wars route and give us Bond pastiches, but hey, the Broccolis did that from Thunderball and onwards...to great success. Give me John Barry, Ken Adam and Lewis Gilbert pastiches any day. Here endeth the lesson!

I think it’s more likely that someone like Apple or Amazon would attempt to buy MGM. Apple and particular needs to build up its library, and ownership of a bunch of MGM titles and properties would be a way to do that somewhat quickly.

Doesn’t Turner own much of the MGM catalog?

The term "MGM catalog" is really confusing.

Ted Turner bought the entire pre-1986 MGM catalog, in order to get Gone With the Wind, and to feed his TNT and then later his TCM networks. The catalog was massive, and he got every classic MGM film as a result. In addition, he gained the entire pre-1950 Warner Bros catalog, which had been sold to MGM years back (Casablanca, etc). When he sold Turner Entertainment to Warners, they took on the pre-1986 MGM catalog and got their own pre-1950 catalog back.

What we now call the "MGM catalog" consists of all MGM titles post-1986, plus the ENTIRE United Artists catalog, plus the Orion catalog, plus a bunch of other movies.

That's the catalog everyone is eager to buy, it's surprisingly huge, even without any classic "MGM" titles.

At this point I would love MGM to be sold just to end their chokehold on EON.

Well, EON has veto power - but MGM is the albatross around their neck.

It doesn't look like anyone posted this before, but the theme song with the instrumental track was released on CD by Universal Music Japan back in October as a Japanese exclusive:

    https://www.universal-music.co.jp/billie-eilish/products/uics-5053/
    https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B08J22BMFG/?language=en_US/
    https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UICS-5053/

I would buy it, but the instrumental really isn't as good as I was hoping it would be. I hadn't listened to the song in months so I forgot what the music sounds like, and for me it only gets interesting toward the end and even then, not all that much.

Still, it's nice to have something like this not exclusive to vinyl and promo CDs/CD-Rs.

That sucks the gun barrel was ghost written/composed.

I was hoping for an Eric Serra Goldeneye inspired gun barrel.

Because Hans is THE Man smile
The Man who compose with other 20 men and ruined forever the art of film scoring.
Now the nex is the James Bond franchise.
    Well Done!

Wrong. Zimmer would still deliver one great inspired score after the other alone if studio heads had not overpowered him with offers for last minute score replacements AND audiences had disliked his work.

He just reacted to the marketplace by expanding his workforce and strengthening the supply.

Exactly. WW84 is the score of the year. What a surprise!

Someone posted on this thread when the HZ gun barrel was released, that it was composed or arranged by another RC guy.

Composed? Definitely not. You know who composed the Bond theme, don't you?

As for arrangement - Zimmer is working with others in his MV Endeavour, that's no news but part of his working style.
