MEDICINE MAN - beautiful score

Agreed, I would love to have a rerelease of this one. I lost the original pressing in a move a few years back and my shelf has been lesser because of it. The ending to The Harvest is one of my favorite pieces, especially when those lush strings come in over the synthetic rhythm. That chord at 2:50 that the bass plays is absolutely beautiful.

Off hand, aside from any rejected film scores and some TV work (including TV movies), I think every film score I wanted expanded, has already happened! That's pretty sweet Varese just knocked out what may have been the last one for me -- "Air Force One".

Though there are a couple of alternate (or slight variants, as I'll call them) cues from "Star Trek: First Contact" I wish I had in remastered sound.

The 13th Warrior, Leviathan and Rudy

The 13TH WARRIOR.

Ost is pretty good for 13th.
But I would go for the COMPLETE FILM TRACKS for FLINT!

There is no score from Goldsmith in this series, and the first CD release was from GNP CRESCENDO not VARESE, but who cares ...

I'd go for a recording of BABE.

Great! If film music producers are nervous about producing a premiere recording of a never recorded and never heard score, I suggest they try a Kickstarter (as Intrada did with Dial M for Murder) to see what support they receive. I think this could actually happen, some day!

That would be incredible if it existed. A rerecording maybe? Does Varese still do re-recordings?

It would have to be a re-recording because it was never recorded in the first place, as confirmed by Bob Townson in my conversation with him:
http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1301242-odyssey-interviews-robert-townson-part-1
http://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1361503-odyssey-interviews-robert-townson-part-2

Varese sadly hasn't done a re-recording since their Club release of Joel McNeely conducting Herrmann's North by Northwest, which was quite a few years ago. But that doesn't mean it's impossible that some label or producer would pursue it -- in our conversation Bob sounded somewhat interested in producing a live performance of the Goldsmith score to picture, and made clear that if he did that he would of course produce an album as well (as he did with David Newman and his concerts/album celebrating the scores of 1985).

It's time for "Rudy" to get an expanded treatment.

It would kinda make sense since the complete score has been performed live to picture this past year. That said, unlike most of the scores Varese controls, Rudy *has* at least received a legal complete release -- as a DVD isolated score track. Now, that's in lossy/compressed sound of course, but it still sounds rather good and the rip I have tides me over to the point that I'd be more excited for an expansion of say Medicine Man or even US Marshals...

U.S. Marshals - complete

I've never been a big fan of this score myself, but I do believe it is the Varese-controlled Goldsmith score that has the most unreleased music, at this point -- over half of it! So I am definitely interested in an expansion to see if my enjoyment of it improves as it has for so many other Goldsmith scores after they were expanded.

EDIT: Oh! I guess technically the two Flint scores and The Other are also half-unreleased on CD, but at least for those three we have virtually complete (film edits are maintained) isolated score tracks on Twilight Time Blu-rays.

The 13th Warrior, Leviathan and Rudy

Varese confirmed on Facebook (about a year ago now) that they never had perpetuity rights on Leviathan (they released it in 1989 just before that became their standard procedure), and basically that it's fair game for any specialty label that can make an arrangement for the complete tapes surviving in Rome. I hope it happens some day as the unreleased music sounds varied and interesting!

The 13TH WARRIOR.

Yeah the 20+ minutes of unreleased music from this is all really good and deserves to be commercially released.

I think The Other is definitely the most important of these titles to be considered, for the quality of the score as opposed to the popularity of the film. The isolated score on the blu-ray really highlights what a great job Goldsmith did initially, before much of it was cut.
And The Mephisto Waltz, if the missing elements were ever found.

Agreed! And LLL's working with both Fox and Varese to release restored versions (reinstating some missing elements/overlays) of Jerry's two PotA scores has reinvigorated my hope that The Other and The Mephisto Waltz could finally get the definitive editions they deserve!

It seems like it could free enough votes to re-order the lower rankings.

I think at this point I'm leaning towards waiting until 2020 to start a new thread with that year in the title. (There should be one more Varese batch before then if they hold to their Facebook claim earlier this year.)

MULAN MULAN MULAN... but I know we’re probably at Disney’s mercy on this one.

Indeed, and if they let any of our specialty labels have one of their animated features to expand, it would clearly be Intrada (who did put out The Black Cauldron and The Rescuers Down Under in complete form) rather than Varese.

MEDICINE MAN - beautiful score

It's a fantastic score and even though only 15 minutes are missing that's more than enough to get me excited for an expansion...

re-release of THE EDGE for people who missed it, like me

Varese has never had anything to do with The Edge. It was a Sony Music-owned album expanded by LLL. Since Sony Music has, as of earlier this year, ended all third party licensing, the chances of a reissue of this are pretty nonexistent I would think. LLL and Intrada did both say they had two Sony Music expansions in the pipeline that were still happening (none of which have come out), but I'd be surprised if one of those was a reissue of The Edge, sorry.

The Final Conflict
Damien:Omen II

Thanks to my interview with Robert Townson, we know that he (through his own label Masters Film Music) controls the rights to The Final Conflict, not Varese, and since he's no longer there he would have to be the one to produce a complete release. As for a reissue of Damien: Omen II with improved sound (it was already complete), Varese likely does control that though they don't control the original album recording.

The Other
The Mephisto Waltz
Our Man Flint
In Like Flint

I really expected Deluxe Editions of these Fox-controlled titles to come out when Twilight Time put out their Blu-rays with isolated score tracks (that's what happened with other scores like Enemy Mine, for example). But nada. Fingers crossed that LLL made a deal for them with Fox and Varese around the same time (or not long after) they made the deal for the two Goldsmith PotA scores which Varese controlled.

I would go for the COMPLETE FILM TRACKS for FLINT!

At least they've been released (virtually) complete on the Blu-ray iso track. Better than them not being out there at all.

Shamus
The Don is Dead

Neither of these scores has anything to do with Varese, and Shamus has been confirmed lost by Lukas Kendall (along with a couple other "mod" scores of Jerry's: Pursuit and the film recording of The Last Run). However, no one has ever said anything about The Don Is Dead tapes being lost, so it might come out from any label that deals with Universal.

VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. COMPLETE!™

If any label has perpetuity rights on this that would have to be dealt with, it'd be GNP Crescendo, not Varese. LLL has sub-licensed previously released cues from them on Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, so if GNP also got perpetuity rights on VttBotS, at least there's already an established relationship in place that it shouldn't be so much of a hurdle. I share your desire for a complete release of Goldsmith's score for "Jonah and the Whale" and would love for a good chunk of work by other composers to also be included.

Terminal Velocity - Complete!

It's not Goldsmith of course... but close enough!

Terminal Velocity - Complete! big grin
