BTL: You might not be able to answer my last question because you haven’t started working on it yet, but while Jurassic World is something you’ve been doing already, The Batman must be tough because there’s so much iconic music associated with the character. People know or think they know what a Batman movie might sound like from Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer and even the ‘60s show. How do you go into something like that without worrying about repeating what’s been done before or drifting too far from what’s expected.

Giacchino: You know, it’s interesting, because there’s two camps in this thing. There are the people that are like, “Oh, there’s a Batman movie. You better use the Danny Elfman theme or the Hans Zimmer theme,” or who knows what theme. It could be anything, and they refuse to let go of what was. What I love about comic books growing up is that you would see all different versions of Batman. There would be this series, and then there would be a totally different series where he’s almost a different person in a way. You would get everyone’s interpretation of what they thought Batman was, we do it with Shakespeare all the time. Everyone puts on their own version of Shakespeare. In terms of taking an existing character and reinventing it in some way, that’s the great gift of all of this is we get to see different versions of it. For me, it’s more about what is right for our Batman? What are we doing for our Batman? This is our Batman. I’m not concerned about anything that came before. I’m not thinking about that at all. I loved all of it. I was certainly there in the theaters watching it, and I loved Batman since I was a kid, but I’m excited to do our version of it, and what we think it should be. That’s how I approach every time I do one of these movies that is tied to something from the past. It’s about the excitement of “Alright, this is our version, so now we get a chance to do what we think would be cool to do with this character.” So that’s always the approach I take.

While I'm not a fan of Giacchino, I am hoping for the best with what he delivers. In the end, we must wait for the finished product to make our minds up.

I thought his score to WftPOTA was very effective in context. And with Reeves directing, I expect the film will be amazing. I really haven't seen a sub par offering by either when the collaborate.

Giacchino posted a promising, albeit short, clip of the new score on Twitter:

Not much to glean here in substance but it does suggest the personality of the score, which is a nice departure from the Nolan-era sound. I actually love the Nolan-era BAT-scores but they are contemporary action scores and lose the gothic romanticism that Elfman nailed so well. It'd be nice if this one swings the pendulum the other way.

I like Giacchino. I think he gets a bad rap because he's often working on big franchise films where he's picking up the baton from other composers. This groundwork was laid with his starting point of videogame scores for THE LOST WORLD and MEDAL OF HONOR series which were meant to sound a bit like Williams.

But I think his Pixar scores have been outstanding (THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE, UP) and STAR TREK was great as well.

But the Mission Impossible films are limited to a specific sound, the Marvel films always ask for the generic, and so does Jurassic World.

The only reason I'm curious for Batman is that DC might actually want to try something different to separate themselves from Marvel, so I'm hoping Giacchino will pull out something more orchestral. But I do think the whole concept of the film being rebooted is silly overall.

does this not sound a wee bit familiar? Just without the harmonic development.

I agree that it is a nice departure from the grim-dark sound that came from the Nolan films.

That being said, the music in the clip is anonymous sounding. If that's a score highlight that MG decided to share, I can't say it does much for me personally.

Literally the same key (Bbmin) and chord voicings at the beginning. But the Chopin is more developed and becomes more ornate as the piece unfolds. Gia’s “theme” is much like Zimmer’s and just alternates between two notes/chords. Just funny because I’ve read volumes against Zimmer by Gia fans… a little ironic.

Yeah..might be the same chords...like almost all filmmusic derives from classical pieces...so whatever.

Same key? So what?

The rhythm isn't the same. The melody (as much as one could call it that) isn't the same. The harmony -- as you pointed out -- isn't the same.

So how the hell is this supposed to by in any way the same music? Similar 'feel'? Maybe, sure....but so what.

"The Batman" sounds like YOR speech.

My guess is the movie will be excellent- Reeves track record is really solid. I haven’t seen a film of his I didn’t enjoy. The score will likely be perfect in context. Will it be something I buy the soundtrack for and listen on its own? Based on precedence I will say probably not.
