Exactly. McCarthy obviously hates the traditional scoring approach per se - and is blind to Zimmer´s bombast.

Isn't it possible he just prefers Zimmer's bombast?

Ha, good call! But if he prefers Zimmer´s bombast and calls it "exactly what a score is supposed to do" and chastises Williams/Spielberg for their kind of bombast...

I honestly don't understand why some people focus so much attention on something they hate (Zimmer's music, Nolan's movies).

When I dislike something (say, Game of Thrones), I just don't pay much attention to it. I don't want to engage with it or complain about it much. I'd rather spend time with what I enjoy, and I find plenty of that in our overstuffed culture.

This, and also actually consuming something before offering a supposedly informed opinion on it.

One of Nolans greatest weaknesses is that he refuses to make a movie with a Zimmer score, and they mostly all sound quite similar to one another. He would be well off hiring almost anyone outside the circle of the Remote Control composer farm, but I cannot see him ever doing it. He uses Zimmer as a safety net, like buttercream frosting, spread out over all his films.

"He refuses to make a movie with a Zimmer score", eh?

What a nonsensical post you made.

Just to clear this up: I don´t hate Zimmer´s music. There are many scores of his, especially for the Nolan films, I enjoy very much. I hope to enjoy DUNKIRK, film and score, as well.

I´m just irked when reviewers like McCarthy, who I usually respect and like, write down Williams and laud Zimmer because he is... well, not as bombastic.

I really think you could have figured that out, but the bellcurve is leaning heavy at the bottom end these days

Yep. That's just FSM for you. I'm not an Elfman fan, but I don't go out of my way to post negativity in every single Elfman thread that pops up.

I guess some people just have too much time on their hands.

Interesting piece by Tim Grieving posted on The Ringer about Zimmer's work for Nolan (and his influence at large):

Hey, WGNBG - I'm not trying to point at anyone in particular, and hadn't really noticed that your post was closest to mine. So not meaning to tar you particularly.

It's just that when I opened up the thread this morning, all the various negative comments about Nolan and Zimmer began to run together. And I just got kind of mystified again at the tendency some have to sound off A LOT about things they hate, when I would just like to focus on things I, um, don't hate.

Plus, I wish for a world where we could all be glad to have both Williams and Zimmer, even if we don't like them both, because I for one think my life would be a little poorer without being able to listen to their music.

Ok, maybe Williams a little bit more, but still....wink

No offense taken! And I absolutely agree: it would be better (and it definitely is possible) to enjoy and applaud Williams and Zimmer if they deliver something great. They have done so and they will continue to do so. No need to pour hate on something unless one can define one´s argument for or against it.
