Only three months left of 2018...will there be a 40th anniversary soundtrack release for SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE?

Technically the 40th anniversary isnt until December 15th, but I'm sure there will be some delightful surprises as we get closer to the date. If a CD re-release is in the cards, they'll have my money. :-)

I left out the *exact* amount of time because I knew I could count on a fellow FSMer to bump this thread with a "technically..." post. wink

Kidding aside (if only for a moment), I really do hope we get this by year's end (or early next).

...(plus I’m not particularly interested in the sequel scores).

Liar!!! ;-)

I feel the same love and hope for a celebratory edition. And I'll take a chance to assume that we're not alone. :-)

Bring on Supes II...again!

I scored an el cheapo copy of the Rhino 2-CD Superman; we'll see how long this one lasts. I'd gladly watch it self destruct once the 40th anniversary edition--should it ever be released--is in my possession.

On a Supes-related note, Back Issue magazine has a Superman: The Movie 40th anniversary publication due out Nov 7. It's also available now (I believe) as a download for purchase.

Sample pages abound:

At least someone's releasing a 40th anniversary *something* for this landmark film.

I have faith surprises are to come over the next 90 days. Harkening back to the "magic" days.

Whether there is a release or not, I will have enjoyed my enthusiasm in this year being Superman: The Movie's 40th anniversary, as well as it being the character's 80th(!) anniversary. I do so for more than just a middle-aged sap's sense of nostalgia, but for the lifelong affection I've had for the character.

Plus, having (re)bought the could-die-any-second Rhino CD and hearing the music again has also fueled my enthusiasm.

2008: Margot is presented with her personal copy of the Blue Box:

It's certainly nice, but unless she was a film score fan, it probably either sat on a shelf or was given away.

Funny, that was my first thought. But still a nice gesture.

If I were handing that Superman Box to Ms. Kidder, it would "be a greater honor for me", so I wouldn't be bothered if she listened to the CDs or not.

Something will happen. The film is being released on 4K Blu Ray, I believe the standard BR has been remastered in the same package.

Somebody will reissue the score, it's too iconic, too important to ignore. Probably LaLaLand for Black Friday smile

Come October 23, Superman II and III fans will be happy, thanks to LaLaLand.

Meanwhile, the anticipation builds...

That pretty much clinches it for Supes The Movie, doesn't it? You can't put out 4, 2 and 3, and then ohhhh, sorry, that's all.

Was there anything on 4 for someone who already has The Blue Box? (I'll ask again about 2/3.)

It wouldn't be awful to buy Superman again, but I'd rather get something else.

The way I heard it, Sup-4 has virtually the same audio program as the Blue Box, save for one or two tiny tweaks that we probably wouldn't notice. And it carries the same text from the Box's liner notes, but with a different graphical arrangement. So IV is for people who didn't buy the box.

Superman IV was basically a very slightly tweaked representation of the 2 CDs from the Blue Box.

I suspect the Superman II and III releases will present CDs 3 and 4, with relevent material from CD 8, perhaps with additional material / alternates if it exists.

Good thing for me since I never picked up the Blue Box.

I will pass on 50 people of the London High School Band playing John Williams Music...Thin Tinny Sound not my cup of tea. The Salkinds truly took the Cheap O way out!

Now I await John Williams and LSO Performing Superman

Thank you!

I'm a big fan of Williams' Superman music, although I never much liked the music for Lex Luthor and Otis. Just not for me personally.

I honestly have no interest in the other films which came after in the 80s. I barely made it past the hour mark of Superman II (with that dumb sequence in Houston), the film is a mess from what I saw (Kidder's gaunt appearance and chain smoking Lois alone was enough to put me off) and it plays almost like a parody at times, which I don't appreciate when it comes to the character nor Superman Universe.

Many of the jokes in II were flat out terrible "I thought he said curl" and man were they bogging the film down with the Lois romance. It was okay in the original because it didn't take over the film... it was already beginning to suffocate Superman II before I'd had enough of its stupidity.

How could they go from something so grand and cinematic like the Donner film, to something that feels so tonally off and cheap? Somebody was clearly cutting corners. The score indeed does sound like it got its budget slashed, and feels far smaller than the LSO in Donner's film, especially when it was reprising Williams' 78 score.

I certainly have no desire to hear any of Williams' cheapened down music again. I'll stick to the original every time thanks. I just can't see myself bothering with ever finishing Superman II either, nor watching any of the other Reeve Superman films.

Such a shame. So much potential wasted.

All of you have to remember, Donner was filming Superman and Superman 2 at the Same Time. Donner had completed..depend on you talk to..70%-80% Of Superman 2. When Donner and Spengler And Salkinds could never patch things up..The Salkinds brought in lil dick Lester whom they still owed money to for Three and Four Musketeers...when the DGA stepped in and said Lester had to shoot 50% of reshoots to Superman 2 to get Directing Screen Credit..but Tge Salkinds did one thing right..Asked Richard Donner did he want Shared Directing Credit for Superman 2..Donner Refused..

Remember..Geoffrey Unworth, Tom Mankiewicz (who saved Superman from Over wrought over camp mess from Mario Puzo...500 page script) most scripts are 150 pages. Stuart Baird ..were all there for Superman 2...So when they released Superman to rave reviews..and box office large amounts..The Salkinds Fired Donner..By Telegraph...How Nice! Lil dick Lester took over..and reshot 50% of Superman 2...But Since Lester and Thorne had worked before..I rather doubt Williams Recommended..Thorne. The Salkinds invited Williams to see the film and meet with Lil dick Lester..Williams wanted to use the LSO again...high price, and Williams salary ..of course high price after some Oscars and Grammies. Lol. But it was said..That Williams only had a very slight chance of composing new music..Since Raiders, coming up..and Boston Pops being a New Hire for Conductor...since it was a very limited budget..it was Lil dick Lester’s job to break the news to Williams..to save funds..No LSO. John Williams has said in interviews, that he was not happy how the Salkinds treated Richard Donner..and Told them all..No Thanks. Enter Ken Thorne and the London High School Band...I have said that when I could and for over 30 plus years. I created Ken Thorne’s London High School Band! And still today I am very disappointed with The Salkinds cheap o cheap effort..and truly destroyed Richard Donners vision and version of Superman 2. And think kids if the cheap o Salkinds left it alone..remember ur clue was the Salkinds we’re going to be cheap right off..hiring Guy Hamilton from Bond Films, but because of his own tax problems in England, could only Film in Italy..with Mario Puzo’s bad 500 page screenplay..and David And Leslie Newman’s Version..putting in Telly Savalas from Kojak to say to Superman..Who Loves You Baby? My Stomach Churns!

Remember Superman 3 ..Starring Richard Pryor, co-starring Superman! Same deal..hire a Ken Thorne rehash Williams music...performed by the London High School Band. Puke!

Then came some really cheap o Superman 4..Quest for an Idea, Quest for a script..but enter Sandy Courage And John Williams to save the day! Superman 4 Sucks big old cat hair ballsas a Movie...But the Music is much fuller and sounds damn good, than Ken Thornes ..London High School Band..And Plus Johnny T..wrote 4 new themes...to save the day.

Wow..I should write that Book! “ How The Salkinds Truly Fucked Up Superman! Lol.

Superman the Movie will be returning to select theaters on November 25, so I would say it is a safe bet that this release will be one of LLL's November releases. If that is the case, I will undoubtedly talk myself into quadruple dipping.

Alexander Salkind didn't want to pay Marlon another 11.3% of profits from Superman 2. He felt that Christopher Reeve was the star of the show now, and Marlon wasn't needed. I disagree, but then I'm not having to pay Marlon a whopping 11.3%.

As for Donner, he conveniently doesn't tell you that he called the Salkinds "assholes" in Variety and that "If Spengler is on the movie [Superman 2], he ain't."
So he told his employers he wasn't interested in Superman 2 if Pierre Spengler was involved. No wonder he got fired.
