I'm not trying to be a hater, but aside from the one swimming shot, if you'd told me that every shot in that trailer was from the first film, I would have believed you.

Now that the main character is also an avatar it all looks like an animated movie.

And the Vin Diesel-like dialogue „Family“ proves that Cameron once again goes for the lowest common denominator.

No kidding. Oy. And there are two more to go after this one.

I have to agree with you 100% on that. Like you said, it all looks like unused footage from the first movie.

And the underwater stuff looked strangely not like it was underwater.

I’m a huge fan of Cameron’s work and have faith he will deliver the goods with this one, but I’m not feeling it just yet. That said, it’s relatively early days given the release date, and Cameron may want to hold the real goodies back for now…. But it’s a risky strategy, made even more dangerous by the fact they are re-releasing the original movie and people might just think the teaser is just for a special edition.

I saw a trailer for the rerelease for the first movie and realized I feel like we still don’t know anything about Avatar 2 with three months to go until debut. I would expect the hype machine to be ramping up but I don’t see that. I’m beginning to wonder if something might be up with #2.

Not that Franglen has Horner’s brand power but even Horner, shy as he was, was starting to give interviews about Avatar right about now before it’s launch.

I saw the first one six times in theaters.

I say that to set the context that I loved it. And this—I certainly hope to be proven wrong—looks like an awful, cheesy retread of the first one. Cameron bad dialogue all over that trailer.

Looking very forward to Franglens score

I wasn't sure about Franglen taking this over, but after his Curse of Turandot score last year, I have high hopes for this.

Looks great, can't wait. Adore the first film. More skeptical of the Franglen score, as I haven't cared for anything he's done so far, but benefit of the doubt and all that.

I will approach this with the open mind I had in my earlier posting in this thread (from April).

Franglen is unusual choice indeed, given that he is not an A-list composer and Avatar is an extremely high-profile movie. Cameron must have a lot of confidence in him, and I will of course give him the benefit of the doubt, as he's practically a "blank slate" for me. I don't remember any of his own compositions and basically just know him as a collaborator of Horner (and other composers). I would love it if he knocks it out of the ballpark.

Cameron's method regarding sequels has always been to make a bigger version of the original, so that's exactly what I've been expecting. The third act of Aliens is straight out of the original, from the impending explosion that can't be stopped, to the delayed departure, to the explosion and false ending, and the decompression finale. It's all Alien. Even the very last shot in the movie is a recreation of the one closing Alien. And Terminator 2 matches the original's broad strokes almost perfectly. This is what he does.

I probably wouldn't sit through Avatar again, but I enjoyed it at the time and thought it was perfectly self-contained. Naturally, when one makes the most profitable film of all time (to that date) a sequel is a foregone conclusion.

Franglen is the perfect choice. He's been working on the Avatar IP in one or the other since 2009. He collaborated closely with James Cameron on the music for the DisneyWorld Avatar attraction and he had been working with Horner for decades before Horner untimely death.

If there is anyone who understands Horner material the best and what is need for an Avatar sequel, then it's Franglen, who did a truck load of work for Horner on the first film.

Also, Franglen's own film work is quite impressive as well. Just listen to Notre-Dame on Fire and The Curse of Turandot. Extraordinary scores that perfectly showcases his skill as a composer. And of course, he finished Horner's last score, The Magnificent Seven, which I think was miraculous success.

No, he isn't an A-lister but this isn't the first high profiled project he's worked on. Franglen isn't a fish out of water. He has surrounded himself with all the right people throughout his career to become a skillful and incredibly successful film composer of his own, and personally, I think he's going to knock the Avatar sequels out of the park!

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ to Feature Original Song by Simon Franglen & Zoe Saldana

Simon Franglen has written an original song for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The track, entitled Song Chord, is performed by Zoe Saldana and will be featured in the film starring Sam Worthington, Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet and Stephen Lang. The song and Franglen’s original score from the sequel is expected to be released next month by Hollywood Records. Franglen has previously co-written and -produced the original end credits song I See You (performed by Leona Lewis) from the 2009 Avatar original movie with James Horner and Kuk Harrell (lyrics). The title of the new song was revealed as part of Hollywood Music in Media Awards’ nominations announcement. Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theaters nationwide on December 16.
