...preferring to only listen to the 6 concert versions recorded for the 2nd Spielberg/Williams Collaboration CD.

5 concert versions, actually, which I only know because I happen to be listening to them right now as I read this.

My mistake! But they're great concert versions regardless.

https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2023/12/27/hook-podcast-special/

I am almost through with Part 1..and Two things are truly interesting about This Version of Hook…which sounds Excellent thanks to Mike Matessino…but it was Steven Spielberg years ago, when???? In 2012 Version..Said NO! About releasing the Songs of Leslie Bricusse and John Williams!

And that This Hook Ultimate Three CD Set…Took Seven Years to Produce and Release!

Fantastic podcast as always.

One thing I took away from it, is that we're bloody lucky to get any of these soundtrack expansions at all, let alone to the quality Mike M. and others pour their blood, sweat and tears into providing us.

When releases aren't quite what we expect (such as the original Home Alone and Hook expansions) it's not down to the label not wanting to, but can be due to agendas, politics, egos, etc that we, the consumer, quite rightly has no knowledge about.

It's amazing we have a dedicated few who strive to keep working through all that to provide the best release they can.

I found this on YouTube a podcast with the Original Screenwriter for Hook..James V. Hart.

https://youtu.be/fzihhH0TAWQ?si=nW4F6voYXQ2ejXVL

It is truly fascinating interview!

According to James V. Hart …Steven Spielberg had filmed ..Five Musical Numbers..BUT corrects himself to Three Musical Numbers..including a Number with Maggie Smith. A Big Parade of Captain Hook’s Pirates Marching into Neverland. Hart talks about John Williams and Leslie Bricusse writing Songs for Hook! And how the Musical Numbers truly didn’t fit into Hook.

The troubles with Julia Roberts! Including talking about being miscast..and acting in front of a green screen..and only had One Scene with Robin Williams together! Hart also talks about Dustin Hoffman doing 30 Takes, and wanting to change the script during the middle of filming a scene!

James V. Hart says he wanted Daniel Day Lewis as Hook! Perfect Matinee Idol for the Role. And who convince anyone including children to join him on his quest!

The Troubles of Spielberg not wanting to direct stars on his film..Hart explains this ..and the massive 34 Kids on the Set causing major problems..and patience wearing thin on Spielberg.

You truly learn a lot..and it fills in the blanks of the backstory of Hook.

The movie is a mess in my opinion. The whole concept of Peter growing up is just ...in a way ...disgusting...maybe wrong wording here..uncanny is better..a hairy Robin Williams acting like a fool when he remembers childhood ...urrghhhh....also the lost boys are an attempt to ingratiate to the kids of the era....embarassing.
The music though is a masterpiece.

For many people the movie itself is a beautiful piece of art, also because of nostalgia. I love it. You don't have to. Happy New Year. smile

I guess some 3-4 alternates are still missing from this release, probably because there wasn't enough space on disc.

This is incorrect. The web piece you cite is more than two decades out of date and hails from a time when all we had by way of expansions were poorly assembled bootlegs. There are no true alternates missing from the new release. The bootlegs do include some wrong takes of certain cues, but these do not feature any unique musical content.

Thank you for clearing this up. If you are right then I'm very glad. Happy New Year. smile

Mike Matessino, in a conversation I had a few years ago with Daniel Schweiger, the author of the 2012 LLL release of Hook, he mentioned that Sony had very specific rules about what could be mentioned in the notes. Of peculiar interest was that NONE of the cast could be mentioned by name. Only the characters in the film.

Did you have similar rules from Sony? And what changed their minds this time, as I saw in the new liner notes that the cast is mentioned by name.

That came from Sony Pictures and went back to some cockamamie PR guidelines from 1991, but it was no longer a problem, as evidenced by the fact that the cast was mentioned in John Takis's notes for the Mondo vinyl release. The only thing they don't like is mentioning movies from other studios and I told them that there was no way we could not put the movie in the context of other Spielberg films and Williams projects. They conceded so long as we didn't "promote" them. There was also a stipulation about images of Julia Roberts in 2012 but I was told there was no problem as long as her reps cleared the packaging, which they did this time (along with reps for Messrs. Williams and Hoffman). Everyone was very cooperative.

Now, ironically -- and I don't know if anyone noticed -- but I deliberately avoided mentioning actors names in my notes for both Close Encounters and E.T..

Mike.

I will speak for most here.

Thank you, sincerely, for such an informative, deeply humbling post. Sharing this information with this collective.....is very much appreciated.

Elated that the things 'we' don't care about (art, images, mentions of other films) did not further delay this certainly magnificent release (I can't wait to hear!).

Best to "Our GOAT"
-Sean

Question for those in the know:

"Michael Lang" is listed as the Piano Soloist on "Banning Back Home [Extended Version]".
So who is actually playing the Piano in the Film Version? smile

Unless there's a conversation I've forgotten about, I think it's Ralph Grierson, Jason. Mike Lang only played on that one session at 20th. That was the whole reason why we had to specify the track in the credits. If he was on both of them, then we wouldn't have had to add that.
