The Legacy of John Williams podcast episode with Mike Matessino is now live! https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2023/12/27/hook-podcast-special/ I am almost through with Part 1..and Two things are truly interesting about This Version of Hook…which sounds Excellent thanks to Mike Matessino…but it was Steven Spielberg years ago, when???? In 2012 Version..Said NO! About releasing the Songs of Leslie Bricusse and John Williams! And that This Hook Ultimate Three CD Set…Took Seven Years to Produce and Release! Fantastic podcast as always. One thing I took away from it, is that we're bloody lucky to get any of these soundtrack expansions at all, let alone to the quality Mike M. and others pour their blood, sweat and tears into providing us. When releases aren't quite what we expect (such as the original Home Alone and Hook expansions) it's not down to the label not wanting to, but can be due to agendas, politics, egos, etc that we, the consumer, quite rightly has no knowledge about. It's amazing we have a dedicated few who strive to keep working through all that to provide the best release they can.

Mike Matessino, in a conversation I had a few years ago with Daniel Schweiger, the author of the 2012 LLL release of Hook, he mentioned that Sony had very specific rules about what could be mentioned in the notes. Of peculiar interest was that NONE of the cast could be mentioned by name. Only the characters in the film. Did you have similar rules from Sony? And what changed their minds this time, as I saw in the new liner notes that the cast is mentioned by name.

That came from Sony Pictures and went back to some cockamamie PR guidelines from 1991, but it was no longer a problem, as evidenced by the fact that the cast was mentioned in John Takis's notes for the Mondo vinyl release. The only thing they don't like is mentioning movies from other studios and I told them that there was no way we could not put the movie in the context of other Spielberg films and Williams projects. They conceded so long as we didn't "promote" them. There was also a stipulation about images of Julia Roberts in 2012 but I was told there was no problem as long as her reps cleared the packaging, which they did this time (along with reps for Messrs. Williams and Hoffman). Everyone was very cooperative. Now, ironically -- and I don't know if anyone noticed -- but I deliberately avoided mentioning actors names in my notes for both Close Encounters and E.T..

Thank you, sincerely, for such an informative, deeply humbling post. Sharing this information with this collective.....is very much appreciated. Elated that the things 'we' don't care about (art, images, mentions of other films) did not further delay this certainly magnificent release (I can't wait to hear!). Best to "Our GOAT" -Sean

Unless there's a conversation I've forgotten about, I think it's Ralph Grierson, Jason. Mike Lang only played on that one session at 20th. That was the whole reason why we had to specify the track in the credits. If he was on both of them, then we wouldn't have had to add that.
