Great news for the man known as Thor.
As we all know, Thor hates anthology shows.
Well, Netflix has announced s.2 will be a continuation of s.1 - same characters, same time and place.

I would have much preferred they leave well enough alone and come up with a brand new season ala FARGO, AMERICAN HORROR STORY
Alas, the power of Thor has prevailed

As a viewer, the score didn't work for me. In fact it frustrated me because I liked the show from concept to acting to set design to cinematography. I liked all of it. It was inspiring. But the music didn't add anything and in places was a detriment. And it has nothing to do with my appreciation or lack thereof of synth music. The music is just there and doesn't have anything to do with the events that transpire onscreen. It's strangely removed.

Tangerine Dream composed Sorcerer film unseen yet they crafted a very memorable score. As far as I recall from interviews I read with them, that was their first film as well. Yet Froese, Bauman and Franke were able to channel the essence of what the Friedkin was after and delivered a unique score. I remember in the liner notes that he said he would have hired them to score The Exorcist if he'd known about them sooner.

These guys might be very good at mood music in their group SURVIVE but as film composers, they don't bring anything to the proverbial table.

I won't see the show until it's released on DVD/Blu Ray, but after listening to both volumes of the score, my reaction is just a big shrug. The influences of Carpenter and Tangerine Dream, Vangelis are there, but as a stand alone listen, for me the music is a miss.

For the majority of both soundtrack volumes, most of the sound is the 80's cheese Cannon Films type synth soundtrack, and not the more developed styles of Big Trouble/ POD years Carpenter or TDream. It doesn't bother me at the producers went for an 80's synth soundtrack and not the big orchestral route. But, the score they ended up with sounding like Beneath The Planet Of Maniac Cop big grin

It works very differently in the show. Album tracks get boring fast, but what works brilliantly in the show is themes that seem bland on the album connect deeply to certain characters/events on screen and the music serves to call up emotions almost instantly. FAR more effective for what the show was trying to be than either true 80's or orchestra would have, imo.

I'm hoping that's the case! As soon as the series hits disc I'll be checking it out. And sometimes context is everything, I may need to hear the music as designed - to support the drama - before I can really appreciate it.

My mind is open...waiting to actually see the show.

I'm three episodes in and seriously digging the show. I'm not sure how well the music would work on its own as a listening experience, but within the context of the show it works perfectly. I see some of the comments here have argued against the John Carpenter/Tangerine Dream sound saying the show should have had a big orchestral score reflective of 80s kids-on-an-adventure films. The thing is, though, Stranger Things isn't just a tribute to 80s kids-on-an-adventure films; it's a tribute to the entirety of 80s horror/sci-fi/surreal adventure cinema. The references/homages/influences range from Steven Spielberg to John Carpenter to Wes Craven to Stephen King, and then some. The music is just one more component of the overall fabric of varied 80s nostalgia here. Could the show have gone the big orchestral route with the music and still fit what they were going for? Sure, maybe. But they went with synth and it fits the show like a glove.

Just listened to Stranger Things volume 1 soundtrack. It has some nice moments but i listened to it about 5 times and have no recollection of anything on it outside the main theme (which i was then misremembering by changing it in my head to Betrayal by Tangerine from Sorcerer, which is one of my favourite tracks ever).

It's pleasant enough in the background. Here and there i thought i caught a nod to Vangelis or others (which may be just in my head), but i can't recall anything else from the disc. I can see me playing it in the background a lot when i'm drawing and maybe i'll get into it that way, but as an album it doesn't have anything strong in it or running through it to really take me through it. It sort of just made me want to listen to Tangerine Dream or Carpenter/Howarth stuff.

It felt stronger in the show for sure, though now and again it sort of annoyed me even then. It just feels like it lacks depth or something for me, not sure really.

I enjoyed them enough to pick up both volumes on CD. "Kids" and "Kids Too" are probably my favorite pieces. Very curious to see where the second season will go.

Thoughts on Volume 2 in comparison with Volume 1? I picked up Volume 1 recently and really enjoy it. Does Volume 2 mostly just repeat tracks or present the "B-sides"?

Pretty sure volume 1 is the first half of the season, and volume 2 is the second half of the season.

Volume 1 is the first half of the season. Volume 2 is the second half of the season. Right? I listen to the first volume way more than the second, if that means anything.

EDIT: Sorry, it took FSM about 90 minutes before it let the comment window open up.

Thanks, guys. I didn't realize the two volumes were chronological. I suppose Volume 2 would probably be worth a look as I enjoy the first one so much.

Anyone have any suggestions for a solid 30 minute playlist?

Actually, I just did this. This 36-minute "suite" was based on tracks that were the most musically interesting to me. I didn't include many of the more ambient/mood-setting tracks, effective as they may have been in the series.

Disc 1:
Stranger Things
Kids
Nancy and Barb
Lay-Z-Boy
Friendship
Eleven
A Kiss
Hanging Lights
Walking Through the Upside Down
Run Away
Dispatch

Disc 2:
Hopper Sneaks In
Rolling Out of the Pool
Gearing Up
Kids Two
Talking to Australia
Breaking and Entering
Stranger Things (Extended)
