Thank God I'm not a perfectionist so it doesn't bother me the least that the music on the CD is not the exact music we can hear in the trailer. I'm just glad this melody found its place on this new release along with the missing orchestral version of the other Melanesian hymn. Slower or faster than in the trailer - I don't really care. There's not such a huge difference.

Only film music causes such an emotional response

I got my copy today!
It is the special 20th "ANNIVE~RARY" Edition

I only wanted this because I recently got into minimalist and ambient music. I wasn't in love with the score in '98, I never understood the fascination with all the chant stuff.

* And yes La-La included an additional cover with the corrected spelling, and a dedication to Nick Redman on the other side. Oh and the insert booklet is too thick for the jewel case to close all the way. Can't wait to hear the music!

This is an astonishing release, something I’ve always wanted but didn’t dare dream would come to pass. I’m currently on a job in Queensland (where the majority of the film was shot) so it’s been a joy to get familiar with the expanded program in these surroundings. The main two hour program is absolutely mesmerising, containing so much music from the film I’d hoped to hear separately, unused music we’re hearing for the first time and it all flows brilliantly as a cohesive whole. It’s absolutely phenomenal and the Alternates are all interesting too.

I will admit that despite it being a coveted release for me I was on the fence about getting it due to the high price for only 2 discs I didn’t already own. That said now that I have it I absolutely think it’s correct for the original album and chants to be on there as they are essential in terms of representing the music from the film. The original album obviously has the music arranged very well into suites but the second half contains music (and forgive me if I’m wrong here) that isn’t in the film or on the first two discs.

I’m thinking in particular of ‘Stone in my Heart’ and ‘The Village’. Can anyone help with what these were composed for? Are they Alternates for material in the main program? They may even have been for some of the copious material cut from the final cut of the film.

Mike M, did you do any tinkering with the original album sonically or is it identical to the original release? Either way it sounds great!

So in a long winded way I’m saying this is an astounding release, many thanks to all involved and I heartily recommend it to anyone else who’d been on the fence about it.

Yes it is tempting and expensive. Hopefully there will be a LLL sale so I can add this with some other titles I need to pick up. Shipping costs to the UK are now always the killer!

Maybe we should form a collective and each puts in funds. Then we share it once it arrives.

"The Village" is the scene where Witt returns to the village only to find the villagers are afraid of him.
The first part is a variation on " In Paradiso" the piece heard over early scenes of Witt cavorting with the Islanders.
Unfortunately Malick dialed it out.
(Btw: I mistakenly wrote that this piece wasn't included on either versions)

I listened to the Alternates again last night and I’m pretty sure ‘The Village’ is ‘Witt Travels (alternate)’.

Finished listening to this and I must say this may be his opus, one of the best scores. THANK YOU LLL.

Fantastic release!
Thanks to the boys at LLL!

BTW Jeff did a fine job on the liner notes but made one minor mistake:
The alternate flashback music for Bell was indeed heard before - it is the second half of " The Lagoon" on the ost.

Finally picked this one up and boy, what a wonderful release! Sure the 4th disc might be filler for me but the score itself is incredible, easily one of Zimmer's best. Great to finally own the score in complete form.

" Stone in My Heart" is not in the film. Maybe Jeff B. knows what is was intended for?

" Village Flashback" replaced the unused part of " The Village".

What a fantastic release! I’m so thankful to not only have the full score as recorded for the film, but a better quality version of the soundtrack album as well. Thank you to everyone who put in the effort to make the release possible!

No way i spend $60 without knowing what the hell is included!

Fwiw

Sale reduced the price to $45
Amoeba gave me $8 trade for CHANTS ( +$2 for ost)

So in reality I paid $35 for the set.

Such a deal!!!!!

Time I gave this thread a bump. I adore this release. Not a week goes by that I don't give the first two discs a spin. This score is a masterpiece, it works as a piece of music seperate from its film. Someone should write a book about it...

I find the ost a great listen also. There are pieces unique to that version like LAGOON, JOURNEY...ATOLL- which apparently were Hans versions that emulated the Ives and Part recordings- Plus the end title orchestra version of one of the chants.

I have tried to make an" Best of..." 2 CD version but it's hard.

A masterpiece.
