Glad I got to hear the Horner....big curiousity factor on that one.
It's good, I enjoyed it.
Lots of 'The New World' descending progression/piano-low string business- that stood out more than everything else.

I'm also happy that this surfaced - this seemed like something that would never be heard.

Here is the direct link, so not everybody needs to search for it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5awOAHWBV1k&t (won't let me embed)

Curious if more previously elusive high profile rejected scores - such as Howard Shore's "King Kong," John Barry's "Year of the Comet," or Elmer Bernstein's "Rat Race" - will follow...

Track timings would help. It's quite possible a splice job is involved here.

No splice job. IT'S THE KORZENIOWSKI'S ALBUM'S TRACKLIST.
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH the rejected Horner's score.

Why are you SHOUTING when RustyNail already pointed that out? Have you never posted without refreshing a page first only to have found you've mistakenly remarked on something that had been clarified?

Opening sounds just like "THE NEW WORLD"

Love the score and James Horner. To me it sounds like it would have fit the film nicely. I'm one who doesn't care about the maestro's recurring sounds and theme styles. He draws from his color box and the same or similar stuff can work in many different films. There is a lot of completely original stuff in it too and I really like that. The song is very nice, starting at 56:27 on the youtube offering of the score. As I commented on youtube, "I weep and then I weep not for the director and the producers throwing the score out. Their MAJOR loss."

I'd love to see and hear the film with both scores and see how I am affected by them.

Perhaps our friend here on the board THE MUTANT can do his wonderful match ups he has done with other scores. Would love to hear your work on this one buddy!

I'd buy this on CD in a heartbeat. Perhaps SONY can somehow make a deal and get it out to us. I think it could be a Big Seller for them. ROMEO AND JULIET The Music by James Horner!

Interesting how the very first fluttering of music heard on the youtube post reminded me of Alex North and how he used to mix vocal and orchestra as in his score for SHANKS.

Keep Well and Safe everyone!

It’s gorgeous, I love it! I really miss Horner, wish he was still with us. I hope this gets a limited physical release eventually.

I haven’t heard the replacement score, but I love what I’m hearing from Horner here. Yeah, it’s derivative, but it’s damn good.

Yes, please MUTANT, do one of your "Rejected Score" match ups like your wonderful work on Goldsmith's music in ALIEN NATION and TIMELINE!

You are Amazing man!

Yes, this sounds like a complete mashup of other Horner scores and I definitely hear a lot of The New World in this, but it's nice to have some new Horner to listen to and I liked it. This deserves a limited CD release. Not sure if it will ever happen, but considering it's a finished score, you would think it would be a no-brainer to release this for fans of Horner's work. Thanks for updating this thread with the link.

I would love to do that. Thanks.

There's also a bit that sounds lifted right out of Iris (the major key version of the 'danger motif').

But I find it odd anyone would think the reason it was rejected was because it had a lot of similarities to previous scores of his.

I have to say, Korzeniowski's score is fantastic, but this is certainly enjoyable regardless of Hornerisms. I wonder if the fact it's now 'making the rounds' as it were means a release is forthcoming? (This happened for instance with the full scores for BTTF 2 and 3).

I can tell what happened here.

Someone told James to copy the temp track. If you told me this was the temp track I'd believe you. The primary theme is just that from The New World with almost no change. And the transition from Sneakers material into the New World material is just so sudden and without effort it just...sounds like a temp track. And not to beat a dead horse but 75% is just transcribed from Sneakers! I'm usually forgiving about Horner's reuses but this is at an entirely different level.

This is the real deal and I've got to say I'm let down. Especially so because it reunited Horner and Sissel...just for Sissel to rerecord Sneakers?

On the FANS OF JAMES HORNER Facebook page you can see the final scene of the movie with Horner's score and the End Title Song/Score by the Maestro. Works nicely for me. Very powerful.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2206810445/

And here's what the replacement score sounds like with same picture starting at 9:16

I would have definitely gone with the sonically louder, beautiful, overwhelming and powerfully passionate James Horner music. The softer approach from the other composer was okay, but for me personally Horner's music had much more of an emotional impact. What do you all think? It may sound funny the way I'm thinking, but Horner's score for me WAS for ROMEO AND JULIET. The other one was more like, good for Fairie Tale Theater. It wasn't that bad, but for me, Horner gets the Cigar!

Which music for that ending would you have chosen?

Thanks zooba! I gotta say Horner’s ending is very powerful. It definitely scores the tragedy, while I think Abel’s is perhaps more bittersweet and a touch uplifting. My preference is for Horner.

I agree Mike_H. After all, the original story by William Shakespeare is called "The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet" I get the bittersweet and uplifting feeling in Horner's End Title Song, which I like very much. In the end it's just every one's personal choice. All are welcome! Thank you Mike_H!

I'm saying it again: Horner is my second favourite composer (right after Morricone) and I have lots of CDs from him, while I only own 3 by Korzeniowski. But in this case I prefer Korzeniowsi's take. He wrote an absolutely stunning score to Romeo & Juliet. Horner's is good as well but it's only good, and not a stunning one. So I stick with the Korzeniowski score.

Anybody displaying shock or surprise in hearing segments of New World, Sneakers, Glory, Braveheart and Apollo 13 in this score just haven't been paying attention, in my opinion.

I absolutely LOVE IT!!
A new James Horner score, 5 years after his death, is a gift from the heavens.
I can't imagine any fans of JH not loving the sh!t outta this.
Everything is in place. The borrowings. The re-use.
But also the beautiful melody. Exquisite orchestration. Attention to drama. The emotion!!
For me, this trumps the AK music, just in how much more expressive and emotional the music IS.
The AK score is pleasant, but very much in line with more modern scoring sensibilities.
For me, Horners score is timeless. And the voice and choir is sublime, in relation to the story.
What a birthday gift this has been smile

What a lazy score. Even for Horner's self plagiarism standards.

Using Sneakers again, a score for a modern computer spy movie, into a Shakespearean enviroment is just ludicrous.

It is understandable why it was rejected.

I will never figure why Horner, being such a well trained and talented musician, CHOOSE to destroy his own work with such shamefull self-rip offs...

Very sad.
