wayoutwest, I'm not sure I would call 10CC's "I'm Not in Love" an upbeat song (even though the lyrics are downbeat). In fact, it's one of the most downbeat songs of all time.

Think you are right different songs and composers scores can have quite different effects at different times throughout ones life that 10cc track used to make me laugh years ago,but not really anymore, guess its one when you first remember ever hearing it you expect it to be a pure love song, have not listened to it in years.

Here is another one for you that is just downbeat wink

Always liked this Group and went to the Concert when they where touring promoting this Album.

Now you're talking Brechtian!

Kurt Weill (music)/Bertolt Brecht (lyrics)

Check out the lyrics to the original German "Ballad of Mack the Knife." Jaunty melody, lurid lyrics.

Or "Denn Wie Mann Sich Bettet So Liegt Mann" from their opera, "Aufsteig und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny," sung to a tune that sounds like a hymn:
"Denn wie mann sigt bettet so liegt Mann,
Es deckt einen da keiner zu,
Und wenn einer tritt, dann bin Ich es,
Und wird einer getreten dann bist du's...

"Then as you make your bed so will you lie,
There's no one to cover you there.
And when anyone kicks, then it's me,
And if anyone gets kicked, then it's you."

Nothing like that Weimar schmaltz......

How's about this great Dudley Moore classic?

It's even better in the film context.

How about this one -- kind of a chirpy bubblegum tune married to somewhat sad, dark lyrics:

“My Name is Jack”
By John Simon
(Made a “hit” by Manfred Mann)

My name is Jack and I live in the back
Of the Greta Garbo Home
With friends I will remember
Wherever I may roam.

And my name's Jack and I live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'
We all love Jack, we live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'

There goes Fred with his hands on his head
'Cause he thinks he's heard the bomb
And here comes Superman
Who really puts it on

There's lots of fun and I love to run
Up and down the stairs
I make as much noise as I want
And no one ever cares

And my name's Jack and I live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'
We all love Jack, we live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'

There's Carl over there with his funny old hair
And he's never sad at all
And when I grow up, I want to run
As fast as my friend Paul

There's the prettiest girl in the whole wide world
And her name is Melody Mend
And here comes Ma with brother Tom
Who's probably my best friend

Well, Tom is my best friend
Well, Tom is my best friend

And my name is Jack and I live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'
We all love Jack, we live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'

My name is Jack and I live in the back
Of the Greta Garbo Home

And my name is Jack and I live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'
We all love Jack, we live in the back
Of the 'Greta Garbo Home for Wayward Boys and Girls'

My name is Jack and I live in the back
My name is Jack and I live in the back

Count Five- "Psychotic Reaction"

This song has it all: catchy guitar riff, bluesy harmonica wailing, and a tremendous drum that kicks in at 0:24 and does all kinds of rock and rolly things. All to downbeat lyrics...

"I feel depressed, I feel so bad..."

Damn, it's good!

The Beatles- "Eleanor Rigby"

For my money, the saddest--no, make that the loneliest--song ever written.

I wonder how one would classify "Suicide is Painless" from M*A*S*H? "Wistful song with downbeat/upbeat lyrics"?
