My big question is did they fix the terrible continuity gaff in the final scene where Spock and McCoy are wearing each other’s jackets? Honestly, that is one of the laziest scenes in cinema history - how could nobody have spotted that? But easily fixed with CGI today of course. I never noticed it, that detail was so small, I didn't see it until someone pointed it out. I DID notice Kim Cattral's mismatched uniform colors in The Undiscovered Country. Star Trek is no stranger to continuity gaffes.

I didn't even notice the fix or that it wasn't quite good. I did notice a lot of other stuff though.

I bought that big lush set with the art work, nice set. I struggled through that remastered 4k cut, I like some of the changes, but some of it, especially the altered effects, I did not. I finally settled back to the trust old 4k theatrical cut. I will have to do that next, but why does the rest of the film (the non-CGI parts) look so much better and more clear, less grainy on the DC than the 4K remaster? And that low resolution scene of the Enterprise pulling out of space dock in the 4K "remaster" (and NOT the Director's Cut) is unforgivable! That set is a Trek nerd dream, practical, nope, but a nostalgic candy box for sure. I am not sure on that question, I need to watch both again, the color adjustments might be some of it. I wonder if the standard bluray may rest better than 4k on the eyes sometimes as well.

I finally settled back to the trust old 4k theatrical cut. Yeah, I commented on this when it was released. The audio is atrocious, sound effects drowning out Goldsmiths score. The new effects do nothing to improve the film and some of the shoddy work they’ve done was counter productive to their goal to “finish” the film. It is very sounds effects forward in that DC, often quite loud in the mix, I suppose modern audiences are used to that, maybe they like it, but it is surely not my cup of tea, especially when you have such a splendid score. I tried hard to give those guys a chance, they come across as so very likeable and earnest in the work they did. I just think that technology and time is a double edged blade, is surely presents options you did not have, but the passage of time also change tastes and inclines some people to do things that would not have been done. I think even if they had some of that technology in 79 they would not have done it this way. Some of they way the film turned out were fortunate accidents, like never having the time to let us see the entire Vger, that was one of the best 'bad things' that happened in 1979. And the simplicity of that officer lounge set where Spock and Kirk and McCoy talk is absolutely more effective and intimate that what they added later.

Yeah, I don't deny they were trying to do the right thing. At least if we take them at their word. But my gawd they tweaked every bit of the film, (for the worse as far as I am concerned.) I'm fine with cleaning up the print, dust and scratches, fixing an optical error here and there but people shouldn't just come along and whole sale change things even if they profess to be fans. Bringing the sound effects to the forefront (and I believe they added some) is inexcusable and an abuse of power given to them.
