DEATH WISH 2 0/10

Pure , unadulterated, exploitative , disgusting trash! Gratuitous female nudity every ten minutes!

God help me , I do love it so!
b

It took ages to wade through the Politically Correct, touchy-feely junk people were reviewing in order to get to this one, but it was worth it!

I forgot to mention this is the uncensored version that caused crew members to gag and the dp to quit!

So Bruce says there were THREE gang rape scenes. So why post this with a "winkie" icon? Can't see a single thing that is funny or joking about that statement. Thumbs Down icon would be more appropriate.

I gave it a rating of zero stars. I think that expressed my opinion adequately.

I got that.

Fallen behind a bit, so I’ll be brief...

Day of the Jackal 8/10
Long but never tedious cat and mouse game between classy assassin Edward Fox and pre-Fivehouse Michel Lonsdale. Some iconic scenes and a sparse and rarely-heard Delerue score. Great cars.

Die Another Day 6/10
Watched it for the first time in years to see if I wanted to buy the new CD set of the score. Turns out that there’s only so much money to go around. Still detest the CGI stunts, John Cleese’s performance as Q and the mis-placed audacity of the invisible car.

Premonition 5/10
Sandra Bullock foresees the death of husband Julian McMahon and struggles to figure out what day it is when waking up to try and change the outcome. It’s a little as if Groundhog Day had a slightly disappointing child with Memento.

Valerian and the thing of a thousand whatsits 8/10 for the visuals, 1/10 for everything else.
We borrowed this from a friend to see how good a picture we could get from our new telly. Turns out that Blue Planet II is better for that.

I don't know why Die Another Day is so hated. Okay, the invisible car, the sword fight with Madonna (although her title song is pretty good) & it does go a bit OTT at the end, but I find it more entertaining than any of the Bonds that followed starring old misery guts.

I don’t actually dislike it overall, just the aspects mentioned, which are horrible. I like the pre-credit sequence and in fact the sword fighting as well. I do prefer the Craig Bonds, by and large.

I knew I’d forget one:

Spartacus 4/10 or 8/10
If I hadn’t seen the lurid but brilliant Starz series of the same name it would have been a solid 8. However, what was thrilling in 1960 looks and feels pallid now. There was a lot of fun to be had with the senior actors but Kirk Douglas seemed too old to me to be one of history’s most rebellious slaves. The way they pronounced Batiatus (Ustinov was bat-EYE-atuss, where Hannah was batty-ARR-tuss) was more convincing, but not much else. The score incorporated some music that would have been at home in a circus film, or a western, or a WW1 film, or a dance hall from the 40s. It’s either hideously, insanely inappropriate or an audacious masterstroke, and I don’t know which.

And did I miss something, or did Spartacus let all the other slaves be crucified to prolong his own life for a day or two, whereas if he’d given himself up they might have been spared? It was very late when I finished watching it and I might have missed some nuance.

The only gang rape scene I'm looking forward to seeing involves Kylo Ren, and he's on the receiving end. He's such a b*tch.

Before the FSM Red Guard moral arbiters of our current-day "Cultural Revolution" impale us all on their righteous bayonets, I must state that I was only commenting on the Oscar-bait crud other posters were moistening their eyes over, and not glorifying the garbage that is Death Wish II (is that the one where the girl goes out the window and lands upon the wrought iron gate spikes?), though it was refreshing to see DWII among all that tender-breasted tripe the Academy go koo-koo over.

And to be clear I don't find gang rape scenes entertaining in the slightest bit. It's quite disturbing and in most films it's used as titillation.

That said I am going to say something totally politically incorrect. The gang rape scene in Flesh&Blood was really awesome. If you've seen the film you know what I'm talking about. Paul Verhoeven is anything but politically correct!

Brave man, first you diss Spartacus & then you diss the soundtrack! (calling witness protection). If you're of a certain age you'll have memories of seeing it (I was taken to the Odeon Westborne Grove, West London, & I can still remember it & still have the souvenir booklet somewhere). I used to think the first half was great & the second half no so, now I think of it in thirds: the first third great, second third good(ish) & the last third a bit ropey, & Tony Curtis' part is a bit of an embarrassment (he thoroughly deserved a good bumming from Crassus), BUT, with the stunning Blu-ray restoration, I can enjoy it as an event film & overlook its faults (also I love ancient world epics & sixties films).

I have all the TV series on Blu-ray (Amazon was selling the whole set really cheap about a year ago), but I haven't seen any of it yet, it's one of a roomful of TV box sets I still have to look at.

I have a visceral hatred of any and all artistic censorship. So if I can stick it to the blue noses ( Brit Board of Film Censors , MPAA ratings board, MGM Home video etc ) by cheering the RELEASE of a film that has been suppressed for thirty five years I will.

I'll go one further, I've found Alex North's music hideous. It's always inappropriate, and sounds like the orchestra are tuning their instruments. It's just noise. I'm also not a Kirk Douglas fan. I don't think he was ever a good actor.

In this version the girl-on- spikes scene is more explicitly bloody.
Just thought you would want to know
