Can't say I've tried the Bar None in its original form. I had no idea it existed, actually. What time frame are we talking about here?

1985 to 1992. In a way, not too dissimilar from the Summit bar you mentioned but better. It was absolute chocolate wafer heaven. Then for some insane reason they added caramel which totally clashed with the flavor, changed the size and it was gone within a year or two.

That would have been a prime time for me (start of high school, almost end of college) to have discovered it. I have to wonder if it saw limited release or never found its way to my neck of the woods. If it was anything like the Summit bar then I would have been a fan for life...I mean until 1992. I do remember its later and apparently inferior incarnation.

My two favorite as a kid are now banned candy. Bubblegum cigars and candy cigarettes. Anyone remember watermelon wedges candy? Do they still make those?

Texan bars were another favorite although I'm not sure my teeth would cope with those any more.

now you are talking, texan bars. the adverts were on so often it was difficult not to know them by heart.
sad that it is.
there were two i remember the one where the eastwood whispering texan was about to be shot by mexican soldiers and another about to be set fire to by Indian bald eagle.

Texan: "...Hold on there Bald Eagle. You wouldn’t fire a man ’til he’d finished his Texan bar would you?"
Bald Eagle: Whoah!
Texan: Bite through the chocolate ...and chew.... Real slow.
then the indians wear themselves out dancing and are exhausted as he slips his restraints and saunters off.

Texan: "Someone should have told them a Texan takes time a’chewin’..."

the mexican firing squad one i just recall the openin bit, something like

"...A last request, Gringo?"
texan: "Guess I'll just finish this here Texan bar..."
one of them im sure he walked off whistling....

Oh gosh, TG, now you've got me hankering....

I was astonished to see quite recently my local Ralphs supermarket in Burbank, California, now carries mint chocolate Aero bars. I stumbled upon them in their 'Mediterranean' section way in the back by the ethnic foods. They also carry Maynards wine gums, HP sauce, Patak curry sauces and Heinz Baked Beans, should the fancy ever take me.

I used to love "Hershey-ets," Hershey's version of "M&M's," except that, at first they were shaped like 2 cones connected on their round sides, and came in several colors, dark brown, light green, red, yellow, but don't remember blue, and were packaged in a light green plastic bag. Later, they changed the shape to resemble "M&M's," and eventually they disappeared entirely.

I liked them much better, because I always preferred Hershey's chocolate.

There was another candy, the "Bun Bar," made of vanilla creme, covered with peanuts and chocolate, wrapped in dark brown plastic wrap, and cost a whopping 10 cents! (That was a lot back in the early 60's; you could get a good comic book for 10 cents.) There were also Maple "Bun Bars," which I didn't like as much, though I'd eat them in a pinch...

There's a small shop in, of all places, Ft. Lauderdale, called Over the Moon, whose owner specializes in getting hold of all kinds of candy, from all over the world, and charges a bundle, but where else can you find this stuff? Got "Bun Bars" there, and later found them for sale on some website. Over the Moon does web sales, too.

Enjoy!

Mint Cracknel eek Forgot all about that one and would never have remembered it again but for this.

I haven't really heard about any of these, as none were distributed in Norway -- at least not in my lifetime. However, I DO recognize a few brands on those photos, as these DID get over here or I've seen them on travels -- Mars, Kit Kat, Smarties, Maltesers, Bassett's licorice, After Eight and maybe a couple more.

Now, if we proceeded to the 80s and 90s and included Norwegian brands as well, I could make some great lists for you. But they would only be nostalgia trips for myself, obviously.

big grin Ethnic foods!

I never associated chocolate bars generally, never mind Mint Aeros, with a Mediterranean diet. They'd tend to melt too quickly, for one thing. Maybe if they invented Aubergine Aero?

Mmmmmmm....I remember Aztec Bars...and I used to love them !

I want one...NOW!

You realise, of course, that now I shall have to go out and buy chocolate.
Well, Thank-you very much, TG !

Hey - you're welcome!

I'd forgotten about some of those 60s and 70s beauties. Toffee Crisp with a blue wrapper? And Bar Six seemed impossibly sophisticated. A couple of surprises, as well - I'd have put Yorkies and Lion Bars into the 1980s.

Great memories!

Toffee Crisp with the blue wrapper was dark chocolate. Another one I'd forgotten about until this thread.

Ahh! Mint flavoured chocolate, an affront to nature (as is orange flavoured). I think the big success from that picture is the Kit Kat. It's been going on forever, it used to be my favourite, but I find it too sweet these days.

I can recommend Patak curry sauces, use the whole jar & simmer for a couple of hours...& stick a tin of baked beans in.

I am not sure where you live, but bubblegum cigars and candy cigarettes are still available in the U.S. I see them occasionally at specialty candy stores.

You can also order them online if you are feeling nostalgic:

As for me, a favorite candy from childhood that I haven't seen in ages are Whatchamacallit bars. I think Hershey made them. I am not sure if they are still available.

I also love Crispy M&Ms, which are no longer sold in the U.S. Hopefully Mars will bring them back some day.

Then you're familiar with it?

TG, as promised, here's a glimpse of the tasty 'Mediterranean' fare on sale at my local supermarket in Burbank, California, including (if you look closely) a variety of UK Indian curry mixes, HP Sauce, Heinz Baked Beans, Heinz Cream of Tomato soup, Marmite, Hob Nobs, Mcvities Digestives, PG Tips, and sneaking in beside the Maynards Wine Gums, mint chocolate Aero bars, one of which is now chilling in my refrigerator.

And a pox upon 'tinypic' – now I will have to try to find that photo again.

I live about seven miles from there. Wilton Manors/Wilton Drive is a bit more upscale these days, but for the longest time it was like going back to 1950s-'60s Ft. Lauderdale because of the "modernistic" architecture and the local flavor that abounded. I've never been to "To the Moon" but have driven by it numerous times. I'll go sometime this month and give you a full report via this thread, if you wish. Besides, I need to see if they have Boylan's Birch Beer. smile

Wow - a little home from home. All desirable, although PG Tips pales against our cup of choice, Yorkshire Tea by Taylors of Harrogate. I used to send boxes of it to Cindy (CAT, formerly of this parish), in return for which she sent me bars of Herschey's Chocolate. I can't remember exactly which type of bar, but I liked it.

The biggest chain of supermarkets in Florida, "Publix", have a decent-sized "ethnic foods" section as pictured in the posted photo, but I am also lucky that there is the "British Marketplace" shop nearby and I'm certain they stock many of the goodies discussed here. The owner is a Cardiff City supporter, but other than that, he's a nice fellow.

I was at To the Moon today and bought a bunch of goodies. Mostly things that piqued my interest rather than anything nostalgia based. They have a dazzling array of candies and to a smaller degree, sodas. I'll post the not-exactly Ansel Adams photo I took. More details to follow...
