I second 30 Rock. Although it lost a lot of steam in the last couple of seasons, the first five seasons are hysterical. My favorite currently running sit-com is Veep. The cast is outstanding and I laugh out loud multiple times each episode.

How surreal can you take, Thor?

'House of Fools' is in an entirely new league:

I love surreal (I prefer the more absurd sides of Monty Python, for example), but after viewing those clips, the comedy seemed a bit 'forced'?

I couldn't work out if House Of Fools was terrible or brilliant, whatever, I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if the humour would travel well outside the UK. Being fans of Bob & Vic's whacky & insane world would help.

I agree. Veep is the funniest show on now. It took me a while to get into it though. The people are very mean, but that's what makes it fun.

God, i loved House of Fools. I made some Canadians watch it and they were perplexed.

Any Alan Partridge i love, too.

Toast of London, i enjoyed the first series but found the second series just awful and the third series not much better.

Kimmy Schmidt is very likeable with some very funny moments in between the smiles.

Two sitcoms that my girlfriend suggested, via Amazon, and I enjoyed (sorry the hyperlinks aren't working, so you'll have to cut and paste the URL):

TRANSPARENT
Jeffrey Tambor stars a retired college professor who finally announces to his family that he is starting a new life as a woman.
wikipedia.org/wiki/Transparent_(TV_series)

CATASTROPHE
A middle-aged Irish high-school teacher in London has a fling with a schlubby American advertising executive and becomes pregnant. Against all odds, they marry and he relocates to London.
wikipedia.org/wiki/Catastrophe_(2015_TV_series)

Both derive uncomfortable humor from their dysfunctional characters, with a lot of references to sex and sexuality, rather than the standard mom and pop sitcom fare, so they may not be to everybody's taste. But they're smart and funny.

I forget about Catastrophe, it's great, I missed the first series. It's quite hardcore sometimes, but very funny (& not in that gag/tag/gag kind of way).

Comedy Central's Broad City is probably the funniest thing I have seen in years, even better with repeated viewing. Some really talented and hilarious women.

I've updated the first post with a list of the suggestions -- organized much the same way as I do my thread on paranormal shows.

I've started watching them. I tried two episodes of VICIOUS first, which I did NOT care for. On to PARTY DOWN now, which I DO care for. Obviously, humour is a very individual thing, so some of these may not be up my alley, but I'm willing to give them a shot.

Glad you're enjoying Party Down! I was the only one who suggested it in this thread and was surprised that no one else backed me up, I think it's hilarious. I hope you continue to enjoy it and let me know if you do and your thoughts as you continue to watch. It's not a long show, 2 seasons and only about 11 eps per season I think, or less.

"Are we having fun yet?!"

Great guest stars.

I just started watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and it's hilarious (and regularly features musical numbers).

Thanks, added it to the list (as I will all new suggestions).

Finished PARTY DOWN (a shame it was cancelled after only two seasons), and on to 30 ROCK now. I'm 3 episodes in, and it doesn't really engage me very much. I'll try a couple more episodes, but if it doesn't trigger me by then, I think I'll have to move on.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend "The Jim Gaffigan Show". Hilarious comedian, mediocre series.

And recently cancelled.

Well, I found out yesterday it was cancelled not because the network didn't want more (they did), but Jim and his wife were spending so much time on the series handling different aspects, they simply wanted to get back to their life and multiple children.

Thor, surely someone's mentioned 'The Mighty Boosh':

It doesn't bend minds more than this.

You probably know 'Lead Balloon', Jack Dee's very dry sitcom:

Very well received.

Unlike the others I mentioned, which are all worthy attempts to subvert the tired genre, it's straight up but clever.

'The Green Wing' won lots of awards. Brilliant, set in a hospital, again exaggerating towards the surreal, but good satire:

These things try to push past the 'two opposites sharing an apartment with wacky canned laughter' stereotype which has no value any more.

Cool. Although I don't like ALL forms of comedy (I'm not too keen on punchline-based humour, for example), I do have a wide taste; from all-American, traditional sit coms like KING OF QUEENS to the dry, almost bitter British comedy in those BALLOON clips. But in later years, I've felt particularly drawn to single-camera "dramedies" with a defined story arc -- I guess THE OFFICE ushered in all of that. Or perhaps it was CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM; not sure which aired first.
