I’d certainly have been happier with Germany than Slovenia.

Southgate is ruthless. Just think of the players he's culled. Raheem Sterling, previously a mainstay, dumped. Kalvin Phillips and Grealish go to City and warm the bench - dumped. Eric Dier dumped. Mason Mount dumped. Maguire? Might be fit for the knockouts but not the group stages - so, dumped. Half the squad are new. You daren't have a bad season and it's a risky move to go to a big club where you'll sit on the bench.

Obviously the management see things in training that the public/fans don't, but I was surprised to see Mainoo make the 26.
He looked decent 3 or 4 times for Scum this season, but picking him over more experienced players is a shock.
Looking at the squad, the goalie's are safe (Pickford has kept Everton in the Prem for the last 3-4 seasons now), the midfield is filled with talent and the forward line gets goals.
BUT!!!
That defence looks wafer thin and lacking in class or genuine quality.
That's their weak point for this tournament for me.

With walker and trippier/Shaw at full back, we are probably not too shabby.

But it's a centre half where I'm not convinced.
Gotta hope injuries n suspensions we don't get down to Lewis dunk.

Palace had a shocking season n were awful for most of it, take away their last month when they improved and other teams faded.
Some teams, like Brighton, players play well as a unit. But take them out n they often bang average. Possibly not Eze but palace players i suspect are a bit like that too.

If one of those get injured though our defence won't be up to much. I'm with Kev, it's our achilles heel.

I'll be curious to know if Southgate builds the team around Bellingham.

I do think Serbia and Denmark will fancy their chances against us. And I bet Erikssen, after a poor season with Man Utd, is a major player for the Danes. Wouldn't be surprised if he scores against us.

I can see why Grealish was left behind, cos he's stopped/started this season at Cheaty, but he will always win your team a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box, with his diving and/or genuine fouls on him.

I'm a bit surprised he was selected, he hasn't had a great season for Brighton either. Do England not have anyone else?

I like Guehi there though, far more mobile and quicker than Maguire. And can pass the ball too. It would be a problem if him or Stones get injured, you could be looking at Gomez then.

I'll probably be rooting for the Dutch.
They've got the most Liverpool players in their squad (I think).

England losing to Iceland at the moment. Just a friendly but hardly inspiring going into the tournament.

Haha.
They'll have to hope they don't come up against a defence as mighty as Iceland in the Euro's.
Didn't Iceland do them in a tournament a few years back?

They did, and then their supporters did that hand clapping thing. Do they still do that?

I get the impression Kev isn't fussed about England. I would warn you though, I was hounded out of a thread a few years ago for daring to suggest that England had only beaten 2 teams in their group who were cannon fodder and not to get carried away. And I was accused of being anti english, so watch yourselfwink

Yup, 2-1 in the Euro 2016 quarter finals. Quite a few heads rolled after that.

Full time, England have lost. Just what you don't want, going into a major tournament.

One shot on target. Iceland ranked 72nd in the world. They haven't qualified for the tournament...

Lol. Was it one of your famous anti-English rants?
Dont tell me, England played shit after that n u were proved right? big grin

P.s I watched first 15 or so min, England looked poor n stones looked a poor centre half. And anthony "hooverface" gordon wasted two chances.

Portugal vs Croatia friendly last night. Diogo Jota and Bruno Fernandes on show. Two good teams who might do well in the tournament. Luka Modric still everpresent. One of the Croatians dived in the box and conned the ref into a penalty. Should have been carded.

The Netherlands turned over Iceland 4-0 tonight. Goals from VVD and Weghorst.

Begs the question why the so-called favourites England couldn't do that...

meanwhile... France 0-0 Canada last night. Sacre bleu!
