Anyone into Deadmau5 ??

I've been playing Random Album Title pretty much non-stop all summer and really looking forward to his new album - Lack of a better Name.

I use to like this genre of music quite a bit but the only person I'd consider buying anymore would be Paul van Dyk. He was right in the liner notes for... I think it was Politics Of Dancing that the "revolution" (of techno) - his words, not mine - had failed and that the culture had simply been absorbed into and destroyed by the masses like all other forms of music.

I agree with his sentiment. The positive energy from the 1990s was dead by early 2001 - I'd personally argue that Fatboy Slim's "Rockafeller Skank" was the embodiment of this - the revolution was dead by the mid1990s when you didn't have to walk to five places like a scavenger hunt to find a warehouse party. When it became more about the drugs than the music, when I was seeing people get stabbed over the price of simple party drugs. When promoters started selling small bottles of water for $7 like you were at a professional ballgame. I wouldn't say it was a cash-in like most other things, but it went as far in that direction as it could and still be part of the drug culture.

No, not that much. I've seen their name pop up on a few compilations (mostly remix material), but that's about it. I'll certainly check them out!

I only enjoy the genre on the turntables. Just listening to it I don't like it, I get bored pretty soon.

He's a Toronto based minimal techno guy who performs most of his shows wearing a giant, cartoonish mouse head.

Knowing the taste of this forum, I seriously doubt there are anyone here that share this interest (outside maybe ahem and FirstBreath), but I was wondering if there are any fans of prog house and similar styles here? I'm not talking about crappy commercial trance like Darude or Scooter.

No, rather artists like Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, Paul van Dyk, Max Graham, Juno Reactor, Deep Dish, Underworld, Timo Maas, Ferry Corsten, Blank & Jones etc. Hardcore stuff with FAT beats, that's what I'm talkin' about!

It's popular to say that this died in the 90's, but if you ask the artists/DJs themselves, they will tell you that this is not the case. And they should know.

I still like Oakenfold, Sasha and (more mellow) other Ibiza school

So, ten years on, what's new and good in this genre?

The Mark Van Winkle

Lol!

So, ten years on, what's new and good in this genre?

Well, I still listen to the pioneers of the genre -- like Juno Reactor, Infected Mushroom, Shpongle, Astral Projection, Man With No Name, The Infinity Project, Hallucinogen (at least some of it) and so on. They keep releasing new albums; both Juno's and IM's latest albums are great, their best in years.

I've tried to get into "New Psytrance", the second wave of sorts (from the late 2000s onwards), but it's often a little too mechanical for my taste, as opposed to the lush, organic sound of the above.

Among the New Psytrance acts I've liked is Filteria (especially DAZE OF OUR LIVES, but that's already 10 years old now).

I'm mostly into the "Goa" part of psytrance, but I should probably explore more of what's come out in the last 10 years that is NOT by any of the old pioneers.

I have listened to Shpongle but I could never get into it--a little too on the nose for my taste though I can appreciate what they do.

I was never a fan of drum 'n bass or jungle drum style glitch techno. My first foray into electronica was when a friend recommended DJ Krush. It was mostly trip-hop and downtempo which I really liked. From there I got into Thievery Corporation and Bonobo, both of whom have glitch aspects but are much more in the IDM category (though, tbh Thievery Corporation is kind of all over the place stylistically). Bonobo in particular is probably one of my top 5 most listened to artists. I just love the combination of organic instruments and electronics (probably why I like Jerry Goldsmith so much too).

I also have to recommend Tycho as another downtempo sort of trance type artist, especially the three albums Dive, Awake, and Epoch (all three on YT). These three albums have been on replay for the last couple of years. It's some of the best music for driving or going for a run in the woods or just zoning out with whatever your substance of choice is. Quality stuff.

Some valiant soul attempted to start a film scores with electronic music thread on the regressive side of the board, so do chime in with your considerable knowledge:

Someone made me a techno mix in 2000. I loved it, spun the playlist all the time. Don't have a clue who the performers were. Someone once described the music as "girly". What did I know. I just was hypnotized by the constant "thump, thump, thump" of the beat. big grin

That thread must have passed me by completely, probably because it was smack in the middle of my off-line summer holiday. I'll take a look!

What would constitute "non-progressive" techno?

The inane, commercial kind that I "warned" about in the first post.

Thank you, Thor and Johnonymous. I'll check out the names you mentioned. I'm starting work on a new story which I hope to write for this November's NaNo. It's meant to be a David Fincher-like thriller with lots of adventures while driving around in the city and outskirts at night, so I've been listening to a lot of remixes and chillwave and such from YouTube to find proper "mood music" while writing.

Cool! Yeah, not sure if psytrance or goa is appropriate for 'mood music' (it's a little too energetic for that), but there's plenty of cool synthwave stuff that fits the bill. Or more downtempo, ambient house acts like Future Sound of London, Orbital, The Orb, Biosphere, Shamen and so on. Among the psytrance acts, Shpongle is probably the most appropriate for those scenarios.

I'm interested in all types, fast and slow, ambient and energetic. Currently, I'm listening to playlists of dozens of PSB remixes - mixers from Peter Rauhofer to the KLF, from David Morales to Abe Duque - but I also want to expand to what else is out there. (I tried some hardcore techno the other night; that was too deep for me, lol!)

Ah, I see. I'll mention some must-have albums tomorrow. Now I'm going to bed.
