Russel T Davies stated that John Simm would be returning in the role of the Master for the last of this year's specials, the one in which Tennant's Doctor regenerates into Matt Smith.

Since the return of Davros was a poorly kept secret in series 4 (season 4 for those of you in the US) i've no doubt this is reliable and I believe this explains why John Simm wasn't even considered as the Doctor. Not that that idea made any sense to begin with.

11TH DOCTOR WHO BEGINS
Variety reports that the BBC's DOCTOR WHO has tapped a new production team as it gears up for its fifth season. Matt Smith takes over from the departing David Tennant as the 11th Doctor.
The new team includes Tracie Simpson, who produced the recent DOCTOR WHO special "Planet of the Dead," and Peter Bennett, whose credits include Torchwood, created by Russell T. Davies, the British screenwriter responsible for the successful revival of Doctor Who four years ago.
Also on board is Beth Willis, who produced the high-profile British sci-fi series ASHES TO ASHES, the sequel to the time-jumping LIFE ON MARS.
They join the program's new showrunner, Stephen Moffat, who is stepping into Davies' shoes, and Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, where Doctor Who is made. Preproduction on the new season starts in May, with filming scheduled to start this summer around the Welsh capital city of Cardiff.

Doctor Who tops poll
May 10, 2009 •
The American magazine Wizard has voted Doctor Who as the greatest Sci-Fi show ever. The magazine placed the series top of the list ahead of series such as Star Trek and Buffy, describing it as the most durable, most charming, most altogether fun excursion into the unknown on the dial to date.

Now that BBC America have first broadcast rights to the Doctor Who specials, it would be nice for them to secure the rights to Sarah Jane.

BBC America have secured the Doctor Who specials.

US Broadcasting Details for Tennant Specials
BroadcastingMay 27, 2009 • Posted By R. Alan Siler
In a turnabout from a previous arrangement, BBC America now has first US broadcast rights for the soon-to-be-aired hour-long specials of Doctor Who, Variety reported today.

The Next Doctor, the show's 2008 Christmas episode, will make its US debut at 9:00 p.m. on June 27, followed by Planet of the Dead in July (date TBA). Specific US air dates will be determined for the subsequent specials after they've aired in the UK.

BBC America - which has to bid for British shows just like any other American broadcaster - will continue its first run deal on Torchwood, airing that show's third season in July.

Other science fiction shows debuting on the network this summer include Being Human (starting July 25) and Survivors, starring Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman (date TBA). The third season of ITV's dinosaur time romp Primeval is currently airing on the network.

Current BBC America president Garth Ancier says that's the network should always have had Doctor Who. "If I'd been here [when the original deal was made]," Ancier said, "we wouldn't have sold it, to be quite honest." For the last four years, the Sci Fi Channel has held first rights, with BBC America holding second rights.

New 'Doctor Who' companion announced

21-year-old Karen Gillan has been named as the new companion for series five of Doctor Who.

The Scottish actress will star alongside Matt Smith, who takes over from David Tennant as The Doctor in series five of the long-running cult show.

"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion," said Gillan. "The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Gillan previously appeared in Who as a soothsayer in the series four episode 'The Fires of Pompeii'. Her other credits include The Kevin Bishop Show, Rebus and Stacked.

Of Gillan's casting, new executive producer Steven Moffat said: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Rumoured contenders for the role of Matt Smith's assistant had included Lily Allen, Kelly Brook, Georgia Moffett and Skins star Hannah Murray.

Filming on the new series will begin in July for transmission around Easter 2010. Tennant's final episodes will air this Christmas.

That'll send the cat amongst the pigeons. There was another thread awhile back where the argument was that Dr Who wouldn't be highly rated in the US; most people in the US wouldn't have heard of it. Hmmmmmm.

Moffat reportedly plans to change up the opening credits of "Doctor Who" when it returns in 2010 for its fifth season by adding the likeness of 11th Doctor Matt Smith ... something that hasn't been done since the original series went off the air in the 1980s.

The tradition of including the face of The Doctor in the opening credits began with Patrick Troughton after he first took over the role from original Doctor William Hartnell. However, after the show's cancellation and in the failed attempt to bring the show back in the mid-1990s, the likeness disappeared.

While the star of the show's name is included in the opening credits, his face hasn't in the modern series, instead giving fans nothing more than a view of a time vortex and the Tardis itself.

But is this just the beginning of things from the past we'll see showing up in the new Moffat-led series?

Doctors unite for Children In Need special.

This year's Doctor Who Children In Need special will reportedly bring together all 11 Doctors for the first time in the show's history.

The 15-minute episode, to be screened in November, will include the first appearance by brand new Doctor Matt Smith, reports the Daily Mirror.

The first three Doctors, played by deceased actors William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee, will appear thanks to the use of footage from the BBC's archives.

A Doctor Who source told the paper: "This is a momentous episode for all Doctor Who fans. Never before have all the Doctors been in the same room, let alone in the same show.

"It's been a logistical nightmare getting all the actors together and available for shooting on the same days."

The script will see current Doctor David Tennant enlisting the help of his previous incarnations as he attempts to hunt down a piece of time travel apparatus.

Although this episode will feature all the Doctors for the first time, it won't be first occasion when more than one Doctor has appeared together on screen.

Two years ago, Peter Davidson appeared alongside David Tennant in a special mini-episode called Time Crash and 1993 special Dimensions In Time saw Doctors three to seven turn up in Albert Square. Meanwhile, back in 1983 The Five Doctors featured Doctors one to five, however, William Hartnell was replaced by Richard Hurndall.

Wasn't David Tennant first started out, I remember hearing how he was compared to Jarvis Cocker. I'm looking forward to seeing how he turns out.
