Strictly speaking in terms of paranormal series, a great but virtually unsung here on this board would be the US series SUPERNATURAL.
The first season is more episodic and some rough going at times, but it soon found its footing and by season 3 the show is on a awesome roll. There are several things great about this series: The writing/dialogue is top notch. Sharp, witty and at times HILARIOUS one liners, mostly uttered by the older brother Dean. Sam, the younger, soon develops a serious "addiction" which is a great story arc in and of itself. The effects are good and effective, but are not the star of the show. The spark is the reparte and humor between the brothers and a friend or 2. And they bring up just about every spook, demon, monster, etc ever known and add their own creative spin. Its gloriously spooky, gory(for tv) and fun.
This years shows had the toughest rough patches at the years start and the writing and story line goes nowhere, but the 2nd half has regained its footing and creativity and spark and is fun again.
Overall this show has been great. Granted, sometimes it has lost it's "flow", but then it comes back with a vengeance.
If you loved the X FILES... and, let us face some facts, several of that show's creative force does work on this one. A moment of silence at the passing (a few years ago) of exec producer/director Kim Manners. He gave SUPERNATURAL it's visual flair which they have held on to through it all.
The chemistry between the two leads is terrific. And, if you own the box sets, the blooper reels are some of the funniest around.

I'll also second LeHah's recommendation of MIRACLES. JERICHO isn't strictly sci-fi, but it's worth watching.
If you like humor, THE MIDDLEMAN and the live-action THE TICK (with Patrick Warburton) are worth your while.
If you can find it (not on DVD due to music rights issues, I suspect - but there are ways), NOW AND AGAIN is an underrated gem. It lasted one season in the mid-90's with Eric Close as a physically perfect, government created superhero, with the brain of an ordinary insurance salesman (John Goodman, in the pilot), whose brain is harvested due to an accident. It was a smart, funny and rueful take on the superhero genre, way ahead of its time, and it balanced humor and horror, to a degree, which Caron refined when he created MEDIUM. Great cast - Dennis Haysbert (as the scientist who creates Close), Margaret Colin, Heather Matrazzano, Gerrit Graham... it should have been given a chance to run at least 2 or 3 years. Again, not easy to find, but not too difficult either...

Oh, I definitely think JERICHO is a type of science fiction (the post-apocalyptic, which I love!). I saw most of the first season (was there a second?) and thought it was OK, but it didn't QUITE hook me, I'm afraid.
There was a second season of JERICHO... it's a bit too truncated, but it does give the series an end.
If you're into the post-apocalyptic, have you seen or heard of JEREMIAH, with Luke Perry and Malcolm Jamal-Werner? It's based on a European comic, I believe, and was developed for American tv by the creator of BABYLON 5.

Have you seen the Dresden Files yet? Sadly, the show lasted only one season. Anyway, it is a fun supernatural series featuring a wizard for hire in modern Chicago. The main character is basically a private detective who solves cases that involve a supernatural component, and the show has a nice mix of action and humor. The show is based on a book series, but the producers took quite a few liberties when adapting the source material. Although I can be a bit of a purist when it comes to adaptations, and I enjoy the novels, the changes made for the show work very well on tv. It really is a pity the show never found an audience.

Wasn't Dresden Files one of those unfortunate shown out of production order shows, too? Or at least they never showed the pilot, and started with the weak bird episode?
I wasn't aware of that. I didn't discover the show until after it had been cancelled. I can see broadcasting the show out of order and without the pilot being a big problem.

The two hour pilot was originally intended to serve as the premiere, but certain last minute developmental and casting changes delayed its completion. Episode three (in production order) was aired in its place. Along with the re-shooting of several scenes, the two hour pilot has been cut to an hour and was the eighth episode to air. The full version of the pilot was broadcast late at night on March 7, 2008 by SciFi Channel but did not adhere to later Television revised continuity.
Most notable in the re-edited version of the pilot was the fact that Bob, played by Terrance Mann in the series as a full apparition, was limited to only a disembodied voice who was centered around the familiar rune covered skull with animated lighting to symbolize the spirit within, more akin to the Bob of the novels. This re-editing was done later in the series as Mann did not join the series until after the original filming of the pilot had already been concluded. The full pilot version of "Storm Front" was not included in the original DVD release of the complete series.

Thor, if you can, find the series "Journeyman",a wonderful take on the ""Quantum Leap" story. One of my favorite shows of the last 5 years. Sadly lasted only 1 season.
