Alec Baldwin IS a real person who has been watching movies on TV his whole life. He's an informed film buff with very interesting insights. Who ever said "celebrities" can't also be fans of movies? He lets his passion come through when he's enthusing about a film or a performance.

I agree. Baldwin has a very obvious and deep affection for classic movies, and I think his enthusiasm serves him well. I think he'd do a great job. And he's got the voice for it!

Robert Osborne to take medical leave from Turner Classic Movies
by Shaunna Murphy

Fans of Turner Classic Movie marathons will soon be facing a three-month void as the channel’s long-time host, Robert Osborne, is planning a leave of absence. TCM said in a statement Monday that Osborne will undergo minor surgery, without specifying a particular ailment. Osborne has held his hosting tenure since 1994, and will take a vacation after his surgery.

Fans of the iconic host were reminded that Osborne recently renewed his contract with the channel, so he will definitely return when the three months are up. In the meantime, viewers can look forward to guest hosts like Tippi Hedren, Jane Powell, and Robert Wagner to fill the void. TCM will also air pre-recorded segments with Osborne, including his weekly showings of must-see films, The Essentials.

I wish Mr. Johnson would change his disrespectful headline, and I'm sure that most of us wish all the best to our avuncular television friend.

.....I wish Mr. Johnson would change his disrespectful headline, and I'm sure that most of us wish all the best to our avuncular television friend.....

Yes, absolutely---to both suggestions.

I haven't been watching for a few days and someone called me late last night to tell me that Robert Wagner was the temporary host.

I'm seconding Rozsaphile and Preston Jones' good wishes to Robert Osborne. He is a nice man, and a gentleman, and I think, much loved by all in Hollywood for his skill and fairness in dealing with Hollywood lore and gossip. (He once even said something nice about me publicly, so, of course, I LOVE HIM! smile )

Osborne is now such an iconic figure in this role, he is hard to replace, even temporarily, but the idea of Golden Age temporary hosts is interesting.

Although the guest intros are probably nearly all shot by now and in the can, beyond Robert Wagner, Jane Powell and Tippi Hedren, I wonder who else could do, or has, done them. .....Needs to be someone still photogenic, affable, mobile, and into the public scene yet, of course. (There are many who are still alive, but, sadly, are probably not up to a public performance, and there aren't many men left, unfortunately. And there are a few stars who've had so much cosmetic work done they are now barely recognizable from their film days.)

Angela Lansbury?
Rhonda Fleming?
Margaret O'Brien?
Lauren Bacall?
Debbie Reynolds?
Patty Duke?
Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss?
John Archibald's fave smile , Rod Taylor?
Olivia de Havilland?
Sidney Poitier?
Joanne Woodward?
Julie Andrews?
Dick Van Dyke?
Richard Chamberlain?
Joan Collins?
Arlene Dahl?
Ann Blyth?
Ann-Margret?
Vanessa Redgrave?
Darryl Hickman? (who was VERY impressive on the child stars interview show)
Dean Stockwell?

Eva Marie Saint?
Diane Baker?
Russ Tamblyn?

Wouldn't it have made more sense just to start a new thread about the latest developments regarding Mr. Osbourne instead of reviving one whose title you found offensive and hadn't had postings for a month and a half?

What we don't get, Sir M, is why that's so durn surprisin' to you?

If the immortal Redhead above could scope out, encourage and praise Bob's gifts (long before the world
at large in its usually infinite smallness did), why doesn't it follow HIS ability to appreciate equally auspicious
artistic individuals is just as infallibly acute?

Are we picking a new Pope here?

Are we waiting patiently for smoke signals from the ol' TCM chimney pipe on the roof to find out that a new successor will be in studio introducing the old movies?

Wait...Robert Osborne is not dead yet!! eek

Part of the problem is he had facial work done and it was done badly and it gives him a very plastic appearance. He's a great guy - I worked with him for about eight months in the early 1980s on the Playboy cable show Playboy On The Air (I think that was the title).

Agreed, Baldwin is a very impressive host. Who'd have thought? He is perfectly at home with Osborne and he'd be a fabulous solo host. I do hope he continues and does more and more

I wish the best to him, too. I said as much way earlier. I stand by my thread's title.

That doesn't make a bit of sense. Standing by your threads title that is incorrect and nonsensical. It's not funny or accurate nor does it do him any honor. It really says more about you than him, that you are deliberately leaving it there to just gain a reaction.

But stand by it as you wish.

I treasure Osborne. Once he is gone, we'll be left with people who weren't "there", the way Osborne was. It will be just a lot of people like me, who have only seen the movies and read the books. And they will quote from the books I've read, and bore me to death. They will be like all of those silly people on YouTube, who say with great authority, "Desi was the love of Lucy's life!" and "If only *someone* had loved Judy!" Oy.

One thing, Old Stick. Bob Dorian hosted movies on AMC. Whatever happened to THAT Bozo? He was about as entertaning and enlightning as watching the commode flush.

Just saw a bit yesterday on TCM with a more spry Robert Osborne announcing his RETURN...!

He stated a date, but I don't remember it. It's soon, though, I think in November.

Check out TCM for sure.

(Although I do agree: Alec Baldwin would make an appropriate host...)

Yes, there is a new interstitial of Osborne giving announcement of his return.

It's either November 1 or December 1, I can't remember which.

He looks absolutely wonderful. (Could be that he's had some more work done during the break.) In any case, let's hope that he has many more years of commentary, information, and interest in the films he introduces and discusses.

Ben Mankiewicz is improving, though he remains somewhat a "stick" and comes across as cynical and cold, I think. I don't feel he REALLY loves these old movies like Osborne does.

TCM is also doing a massive image make-over of Mankiewicz---new clothes, new look, new hairstyle---in an apparent attempt to make him look more hip to the younger audience. Still, he doesn't have the gravity and warmth and charmth of an Osborne. I don't know how you can give him that---you either have a special charisma and connection with your audience or you don't. The only other movie host I thought had "it" was George's father, Nick Clooney, who presented films on AMC for several years and was very casual, but also extremely professional.

Anyway, I'm sure it will be a nice welcome back for Osborne from his audience.
