With all respect to my fellow FSMers, the posts in this thread perfectly illustrate why the protests are happening in the first place.
How so?

If I have to explain it to you, then you are further illustrating my point, all due respect.

Not talking about every post, but many of the responses.

Dude, blanket generalizations are not your friend here.
If you don't back up your claims with specifics, then the claim was pointless.
I'm just giving you the opportunity to elaborate what you said and the result of that is a greater mutual understanding.
That's a win-win for everyone.

You don't have to, of course (and we all know how hard it can be to put things into words about this very difficult subject), but if you don't then it just leaves the mild scent of condescension--and I think/hope you are too smart for that.

ETA:
You know what?
Never mind, it's no one's business but your own what comments you choose to make.
And I don't want to come across as some thin-skinned git that just wants to challenge anyone.
Things are hard enough right now.

Yeah, we got one. Mission accomplished.

Well, when a statue-toppler can credibly claim that he believed the statue was pulling a gun on him or that his or someone else's life was in imminent danger, I suspect he'll avoid jail time as well.

Your concern for all those poor innocent statues brutalized by an unjust system is admirable.
Lead the way good sir.

Corporations are the government.

While I agree with all else you said, here I disagree: Published (as opposed to public) opinion is the new government.
And they are neither elected nor accountable.

It's an informal figure of speech.
I suppose it could possibly be interpreted as a blanket generalization, therefore, I apologize.
(However, I think it's quite a bit different than implying that some people here are racists.)

My only concern is that both policemen and prospective statue-topplers follow the law, and that both of them receive due process when they are accused of breaking it. If that's too much to ask, then society is truly at an impasse.

S'all good, man!

My point was, and I am not singling out anyone specifically: The board demographics here skew toward aging white males, and many of the posts in this thread could come off as aging white males telling younger minorities how they should feel. I am not saying that this is the intention of any of the posts in particular, but collectively, they could come off that way to a younger person of color. Just sayin'.

That's a fair point.
But on the other hand I do not necessarily believe that I need to be a younger person of color to comment on what they are doing.
Wrong is wrong, and that has no color.

(I still maintain that now, in some cases (and I stress "some"), they seem to be just lashing out indiscriminately at symbols that may actually represent people that fought for their cause.
They need to make sure their targets are correctly identified.)

And a person of color may say that we need fewer statues of Lincoln and more statues of Emmett Till.

Bringing the discussion away from politics towards fantasy/sci-fi, I'd like to see some Talos-like action from these statues.

What's all this got to do with GI Joe?!

I fear pulling down Lincoln statues will not accomplish that.
There are ways of getting that done that don't involve destruction.

In any case, Jeh is right.
I want to see the statues fight back.
Some old-school Talosian ass-whuppin'!
big grin

There's nothing wrong with saying that. Or demanding that. Or lobbying for that. Or voting for that. It's when the mob tears down the Lincoln statue to make way for the Emmett Till statue that some people look askance.

As a society, how many monuments do we need? Should we have a per-square-mile quota? Should monuments last in perpetuity, or should they last only as long as we need them? Is the act of tearing down a monument potentially as meaningful, or even more meaningful, than the monument itself?

Toppling, defacing and destroying a public statue is against the law. It's a crime.

Anybody who breaks the law or commits a crime must be punished by a huge fine or should go to jail. Period.

How did this board go from film music and entertainment to maoist struggle session? Legit question.

Because everything entertainment has become "political".
