ANGEL HAS FALLEN (2019) - 7/10 The third (and presumably last) film in the "___ HAS FALLEN" series, this film once again finds Secret Service agent "Mike Banning" (Gerard Butler) saving the POTUS (Morgan Freeman) from yet another assassination attempt, only to find himself framed for the deed. Naturally, Mike escapes from his FBI captors (with the inexplicable help of the people who framed him) and goes off seeking revenge. Much shooting, exploding, and other general mayhem follows. These films are like the JOHN WICK series (also from Lionsgate), in that by now you know what you're getting into before you sit down in your theater seat. Like that series, they are pretty much non-stop action. But this is a working-man's kind of action (like HOBBS AND SHAW) and not the highly stylized violent ballets that we get in the WICK films. For one thing, there is little one-on-one physical combat in the FALLEN series. It's all gun play. The FALLEN series hasn't produced anything of note on the dramatic side. And nothing in the entire series has since approached the opening 30 minutes of the first film, which depicted a chilling (and surprisingly persuasive) assault and take-down of the White House by a company of North Korean commandos. The fact that three of these films have been produced is a case study in the internationalization of film-making. Based on their U.S. box office results, the series should have stopped at one. The first film, OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (2013) was produced for $70 million and (after adding in advertising costs) did little better than break even in the U.S., grossing $99 million. But it pulled in another $71 million (42% of its total) overseas. They cut the budget for LONDON HAS FALLEN (2016) down to $60 million, and it probably lost money in the U.S. with its $63 million gross. But the film earned a whopping 70% of its revenue overseas--another $143 million. Thus, we have ANGEL HAS FALLEN, a film that cost a mere $40 million, which after 11 days has grossed $44 million. It has yet to open in any foreign markets.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES 1958 Not seen this since i was a boy and I remembered only one scene - when the coach rides over the peasant boy and the evil aristocrat tosses a paltry coin out the window. Ably directed by Ralph Thomas, but what a phenomenally rich cast, a proper whos who of english talent...Dirk Bogarde, Cecil Parker, Donald Pleasance, Christopher Lee, Dorithy Tutin, Alfie Bass, Leo McKern, Ian Bannen, Ernest Clark, Sam Kydd. "It is a far, far better thing i do, than i have ever done. It is a far, far better rest i go to, than i have ever known..." 7.4 out of 10.

HOLMES AND WATSON 2018 Couldnt find any fsm reviews of this. Its rather hit n' miss. Mostly awkward and whole film doesnt seem to know what it wants to be, but one bit - although obvious - did make me laugh out loud. Holmes runs up to his street urchins and says "i desperately need your help...Dr Watson is in grave danger!" One kid says: "No shit, Sherlock!" Its not a patch on Without a Clue. I think 6.5 out of 10 is about right.
