Great final 10 minutes and extra time period, but I had to turn off once the game was won to avoid hearing all those pundit muppets telling me over and over I've just witnessed the Greatest Game in the History of Football EVER!!!
75 minutes of one sided tedium completely forgotten.
Fuck Off you boring overpaid cliche dropping wankers.

Im pleased for messi , his last hurray.
Whereas french team are young n growing and have a probably bigger chance next time.

Was excellent last ten mins and extra time..topsy turvy and exciting...but reality is the first 80mins were one-way traffic and even argentina took foot off the gas to keep 2 0 lead. 2nd half was dreary until substitutions n france n mbappe woke up.

Then it was impressive, tense and lots of chances.

Overall i dont agree with nick that it was a great world cup, despite the commentators talking it up. A lot of slow-paced cautious games and consistently breathtaking star players were few n far between. Messi, mbappe, dembele, neymar, ricarlison, griezeman (until the final).

All looks fantastic wen you see a month's highlights... but several big teams were a massive flop and disappointment too...Belgium, Spain, Germany n Holland. Even the countries that punched above their weight were mostly defensive n fairly dull to watch.

Agreed. Some surprising results, but the actual football has been 95% dull as ditchwater.

I couldn't care less who won, so I didn't watch it until extra time, & that was great. A lot of boring games in the first week, the second week was better with some surprising results, & the rest of it was good, from what I saw, which was very little. I'm sure a lot of people are like me, in that once your country is knocked out, the interest wanes.

Anyway, welcome back the Premier League on Boxing Day.

Probably won't be long and Mbappe will surpass everyone as the GOAT. He's kind of already there.

This.

Crap until the last fifteen minutes of normal time, then all the twists and turns of the average FA Cup tie between, let’s say, Sunderland vs Forest, but with better players.

Agree also with litefoot, good to see Ronaldo forever fixed at the second-best player of his generation. Delighted for Mr Bielsa, also pleased that Maradona has been (at least) equalled but without the cheating.

Premature, in my view. He needs to join one of the Spanish giants or Man City for that.

Deserved winner in the end, even if I rooted for France.

Messi is one of the GOATs, no doubt, and I'm glad he finally got his WC trophy, but for me, he doesn't hold a candle to Zidane. He's the greatest footballer the world has ever seen.

At WC I'd think anyway.

Yeah. A sad ending to a marvelous career. But God, how that f#¤%ng piece of "#¤ Materazzi deserved it. In terms of sheer gameplay, nobody comes close to Zidane.

And the hyperbole is in full swing now.
The main news channels are declaring it The Greatest Game of Any Tournament Ever.
That is so full of shit it's frightening.

Gotta go some to beat the 66 final for a start.
That had tension and good attacking football for 120 minutes, not just the last ten mins! And the underdogs won against a fantastic german side.

But over the years there has been some terrible finals. How about that one where fat Ronaldo played and was anonymous like the rest of his brazil team?! Lol.

Come on people,it was an amazing scenario for a World Cup Final, what do you think was a better Final in the last three decades? I can't think of any, and there were certainly a lot of stinkers (1994, 2002...)

Sure, a pretty terrible start with one team being one of the poorest finalists ever, and a fantastic last 45 minutes with both teams at the top, like a boxing match. It was pretty amazing, I thought.

Congrats to Argentina, and France as well who managed to almost win while having half of his top players absent of the tournament (including the crurent golden Ball winner), with a great fighting spirit of the young ones (at the end of the game, only two players on the field were 2018 world champions, an incredibly low number)

Wasn't that the France '98 final when he wasn't named in the original starting line up?

One of the worst I remember was Italia '90 final, when Argentina seemed to play for penalties from the kick off and W Germany got awarded one near the end. 2 very average teams I seem to remember. The Three Tenors concert was far better. Boy, have the Germans been in a lot of finals.

80 minutes of mediocrity in a 90 minute game does not make it a classic.

Yes, there was an extra 30 minutes, but we didn't know there would be for the first 80 minutes. It was heading to a routine Argentina victory.

The later Mrs TG and I were in Amsterdam for the weekend of the 1990 final, getting engaged, as a matter of fact.

We popped into a brown bar to watch the last few minutes of the game, and (given our sufferings in respect of the “Hand of Cheat” goal four years earlier) I was quite happy to see Germany win. When we stepped out of the bar a small group of young Amsterdammers walking by asked us who won.

“Germany”, we said.

“Oh!” One of them said, “How repulsive!”

Lol. Not much love loss there tg.
Did you ever read simon kuper's famous book, theres a whole chapter there chronicling historical tension and dutch/german matches. Remember the Rudy voeller/rijkard spitting incident?
