Given Ford's occasional penchant for weak line readings*, I think it's just the case of a young actor who got better with experience. Voice over is hard and not I would think his strong point. Notice how well Mark H. comes across, and of course he's been most successful as a VO actor. *See Raiders of the Lost Ark: "He was good, he was very, very good."

I still think they could have used it as a springboard for a kid's Saturday morning show, sans the somewhat adult content (per, correctly, jenkwombat), had they been interested in doing that. It could have spawned a whole new line of merchandise, too! About 10 or 15 years ago, they came out with an "Animated Debut" Boba Fett figure variation, complete with correct coloring and "cattle prod" stick. Don't know if it's worth much, but for a while, they were kind of difficult to find (Boba Fett being as inexplicably popular as he is)... Sadly, there was no Bea Arthur figure.

(1) It's really cool the original actors reprise their roles for the animated short. (2) Harrison Ford sounded drunk, stoned or both while lending his voice to this. (3) Kinda weird how they used "Squash and Stretch" animation technique for R2. (4) I thought the background music was needle dropped from the OST. Sounds like original orchestration here. We need Star Wars Holiday Special COMPLETE! (5) Canadian company Nelvana did the animation. You can really make out the "French" illustration style. They also made the animated feature film "Rock and Rule". I agree with your points, particularly about Ford (2). I wondered what was up with him as well. In hindsight I wonder if he did it so deadpan the way he did the narration in Blade Runner (hated having to do it, so just made it as boring as possible out of spite). (6) I forgot to add very weird Luke was flying a Y-Wing instead of an X-Wing. Agree with your first five points. The animation reminds me a bit of Heavy Metal. I think there is a slight bit of original music, as some of it sounds a lot smaller. With respect to the Y-Wing, it actually makes sense Luke would be flying that ship, as the Y-Wing cockpit is designed to hold two people, as well as having an astromech droid plugged directly into the ship behind the cockpit. If Luke had taken his X-Wing, there wouldn't have been any room for C-3PO.
