In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, the Black Widow star and executive producer said her contract guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release. The Wall Street Journal first reported the news of the lawsuit.
The article then went on to say that the movie was held back for a really long time because of the pandemic. I would imagine that it was around then that Disney got the idea to stream it, hoping to make the best of a bad situation. Someone at Disney probably should have remembered the "exclusive theatrical release" clause and thought, "Umm, guys...".

Yes Do I think an actor would lie about what the contract ACTUALLY said? Absolutely. I think if that precise wording was in the contract we would have seen a screenprint of it by now
You make a good point. But there may be reasons it hasn't yet. Due process, evidence and all that, etc. etc.
Here's a peripheral question: Is ScarJo also one of the film's producers? If she is, then that may be one of the main motivations behind her lawsuit.

There is something of a stench behind the whole thing, it is not what it appears. The producer thing could be it. This is about wounded egos or something. Making the studio the bad guy is very old trite stuff, used a thousand times.
The finale of this film is really stupid, Marvel has fallen into this rut of 40 minute giant CGI messes. What a bunch of green screen nonsense, just terrible
I cannot get this whole ' let's shaft Disney" and "oh, poor lil millionaire actors" thing going on here. But it seems like you and I are in the minority on this. There seems to be a full pile on against Disney, and it makes no sense.
Oh, I totally get that there is definitely a greed component to this. But breach-of-contract is breach-of-contract. I wouldn't be at all surprised if ScarJo didn't care all that much and this tempest was orchestrated mainly by the lawyers' quest for billable hours.
Fair enough, but I still can't get past the fact in order for her to make more money, she needed more people to go to the theater during a pandemic. Profits over people. That just rubs me the wrong way.

I totally get what you're saying, but the movie was practically ready for release before the pandemic even became known as a pandemic. So presumably the contracts, such as they were, were drawn up way before that--in 2017 or 2018 (I'm guessing). At this point I'd be fairly interested to know what was on that paper when everyone signed it. I guess that's what it all comes down to.
Just an aside. I think same day streaming and movie theater releases are probably bad for the movies. But the world has changed. I am not sure how much the studios can block streaming from the release calendar, maybe a month or something?
I also think that movie "stars" are less relevant than ever. I do not much believe that the studios NEED a big star to release a movie well anymore. There are a few exceptions, but not many. People care less about movie stars than ever.

In all fairness no film is going to make its full potential right now. People need to get their heads out of their azz's and realize the pandemic isn't over and things arent back to normal, no matter how much they want to wish it so.

that is true, and I cannot see when we get to normal again
Damn, I miss going to the theater. And I didn't even go all that often. It was an occasion.
I saw Quiet Place 2 a few weeks back, mostly cause the kids wanted to go. It is not a very good movie, it tries, be it is pretty amateur stuff. It was interesting being in the movies for the first time since March of 2020. More recently I went to see Pig with Nicholas Cage, and I was pleasantly surprised, a more gratifying experience. Then I recalled why I used to go to the movies all the time.
