Just tested positive today. Feeling pretty rough to be honest, but have had all the vaccines available so hopefully that will stave off the worst of the effects.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you're vaxed! The latest strain is far more contagious but presumably not as serious.

Thank you Sol. Much appreciated

Don’t recall seeing you around much, lately, J - been on sabbatical or was I just unlucky?

I've not had much to say that would interest anybody here these days.

My wife and I are both fully vaxxed including boosters and neither of us has had Covid, or at least not as we have noticed. On the other hand, my older son and his wife and two kids (now late teens/early 20s and all fully vaxxed) have all had it, but mild symptoms and just once each, by all appearances. I haven't been masking up when out and about for several months now but may reconsider that soon as there seems to be a new variant making the rounds. Hoping for upgraded vaccine which will address the newer strains in the near future.

So far, so good ...

5 days ago ... I spoke (wrote) too soon! It's likely I was infected when I typed those words but only found out 48 hrs later when I did a test prior to attending a dental appointment.

The last few days have been some of the worst, health-wise, of my life. I understand why so many sufferers struggle to breathe: when you're successful at clearing the nasal passages ... 30 seconds later they're blocked again. Mouth breathing may offer slight relief but swollen tonsils, dry mouth and the need to cough-up phlegm means this becomes painful very soon.

And so, when seeking to sleep the body keeps you awake because you have to force yourself to breathe. This sounds ridiculous ... the body breathes without the mind making decisions but when the nasal channels are blocked and any mouth-breathing is likely to cause coughing, etc. then it's up to your brain to make the decision.

For me, Tue night was disturbed, Wed-Sat nights have left me a walking zombie. I think the longest I've slept is two hours, mostly it's around one hour or so. I've struggled to eat a small meal ... and a can of lager takes me all evening (normally the first one lasts not much longer than the time it takes the fridge door to close ... smile)

I manged to cut the grass this morning but it took all my energy to carry the mower there and back. The thought of driving frightens me as I know my facilities are weakened.

But I am better today ... I don't think I could have typed this yesterday ... so hopefully another 48 - 72 hours will see me clear. And, on the positive side: I've lost weight (4- 5 lbs / 2kg) and not spent any money on buying CDs/downloads smile Both are likely to be reversed as health returns.

And just in case anyone wonders: I've had all three jabs promoted by our government/health service.

So, please take it from me: vaccinations may reduce the risk of serious illness (hospitalisation) and symptoms may be minor/manageable. But you may find yourself in my position in which case you have my heartfelt best wishes.

A co-worker who had Covid two weeks ago said similar things. Dry cough, nasal congestion. She said there was a lot of pain across the bridge of her nose. She was vaxed up to first booster.

Another co-worker who had Covid said she got very sick. I don't remember the specifics. She was not vaxed at all.

I avoided it until mid June when I went on holiday for first time in 3 years. Started with a cough, which got worse. My taste and smell weren't affected. Had a couple of bad nights due to the coughing. Felt weak, felt tired. Basically affected me for 3 weeks. Today, I'm feeling much better, coughing seems to have stopped and I'm going to do a 30 minute walk later today when it's cooler.

It certainly isn't pleasant and should be avoided if poss.

See what you mean.

Seriously, I think you should let us decide that.

I've put covid on a list with women. I can't catch either.

I was on this list until yesterday, July/09/2022. It started off with a headache and drowsiness. Then my fever was about 103. Then the dry coughs, runny nose and body aches. I say COVID for me is comparable as a bad head cold. Fever is like a roller coaster but thankfully it didn't hit me as bad as others.

I had the disease once at the very onset of the "troubles" in late January/early February 2020 -- before vaccines and boosters. Wasn't tested, but one of my bosses had just been to France with her family, and they all got really sick, including COVID toes. In hindsight, my symptoms were classic for the original strain, even if not severe: very mild fever, rash, cough, and just feeling extremely tired. I did work at home for over a week as I felt ill, but not terribly bad. I imagine that my initial exposure so early helped me ward off the disease until vaccinations and boosters became the norm. Stats have shown that natural infection protects just as well as immunization in most cases -- if you survive! But my age, and co-morbidities like high blood pressure and my weight (ahem), are indicators for vaccination of course.

Then just this past April 2022, I came down with Omicron despite being vaccinated and boosted and previously infected. It was mild, really mild, and I probably wouldn't have known I had it but for the fact that I had to get tested for a surgical procedure, and there it was! Surprise, surprise.

I fully expect to get it again and again and again as the mutational evolution of the virus is to escape immunity caused by both vaccinations and by previous infections. I hope and pray that the mutations continue on that path of increased immune escape without adding any elements of increased disease severity.

I'm getting on with my life as it seems that COVID-19, and its inevitable variants and subvariants, will be with us for years and years. I just don't see how the pharma companies are going to keep up with the rapidly mutating variants.

I still wear my mask on the NYC subway, but not in public, relatively open, spaces. I put it on when doing grocery shopping and when I am in health care facilities. I've been having a host of health issues recently. I wear a mask those times since I'd rather not get infected, even if that seems like a certainty. Doesn't hurt being cautious! Also my best friend is a diabetic, and people with diabetes seem to lead the pack in excess deaths caused by COVID and co-morbidities according to some worldwide stats. I'd rather not be the one who passes it along to others.

Well I spoke too soon. I've got it now. Seems like the latest variant is aggressively going after all the jokers who think they're immune.

Ha Ha. Yes that includes me. I was free of it until a week ago when I came back from France with a high temperature, cough and extreme exhaustion. I thought it similar to the very rare times when I've had flu in the past although other family members of the same age (mid 70s) and older have had nothing worse than sniffles. My symptoms passed within a few days. The worst thing for me was losing the sense of taste during those days which took all the pleasure out of eating. It wasn't that there was no taste to food but that it tasted awful, with the exception of certain fruit; e.g. pineapple.

I've had it twice and look forward to getting it a 3rd time next week when we fly to Ibiza.
It seems a given to bag it now, if you get on a plane these days.

Hey, Kev, see if you can double-up: Variant BA.4 outbound and BA.5 inbound! smile

Seriously, though, having suffered this last week (I tested -ve earlier today and hope to feel less-ill in the next few days) I don't know how you - or anyone - can jest about it. Have I been unlucky, susceptible to such respiratory infections?

I know we're told ... and we have to ... live with this but I can't imagine me surviving another week like this when I'm a few years older.

I don't know the source of my infection but presume it to be the flight 10 days ago from Dalaman, perhaps the departure gate where a serious lack of organisation led to a lot of jostling, etc. Having taken 4 flights in the last month I should consider myself lucky that it was the last of these (if indeed, the source) not the first ... that would have ruined two wonderful holidays (the first including my kids/partners).

Suffice to say: no more flying for my wife and me for the foreseeable!

If you don't have a laugh you end up in a rubber room or worse.
