I don't think Archie Bunker was quite as extreme or hateful as Alf Garnett.

You're right. Archie Bunker, as far as I know, was a considerably more watered-down version of Alf Garnett (whose main point of hatred was directed mainly towards Britain's Afro-Caribbean population). Good thing too. Probably saved some lives by doing so.

I realize well we are taking this thread on a little side trip, but since the original ugly meaning of the post is not what we are talking about, I don't feel TOO bad about it.

Anyway, the thing that I always took to heart about ALL IN THE FAMILY was that Archie Bunker was a basically sweet natured guy. Ignorant by virtue of class and education, a Blue collar worker who was just simply - ignorant.

He mellowed over the course of the show.

Carroll O'Conner had a LOT to do with that.

Yeah, O'Connor was a terrific actor (BTW, his British accent was the best I've ever heard from an American actor). Like his UK counterpart, Warren Mitchell, he was apparently very left-leaning in private. I guess that kind of opposing observation is what it takes to really nail characters like that. Likewise Sterling Hayden in Dr Strangelove.

Maybe it's like the implications of that old saying: Only Nixon could go to China.

Well, we're really going off on one here. wink

Anyway.....

Guys ... showing offence is just going to egg him on. It was his intention to have a pop at gays and now that you've showed him some attention he's loving it.

Hell, I should know how that mindset works!

I want to claim first dibs on knowing that First Breath was a tosser.

I can't remember what it was about or anything he said, but my spider sense tingles whenever I see his username.

Typical Euro-humour-sort

So you´re saying all Europeans have this kind of humor? Excuse my words, but that is down right bullshit.

Yeah, I guess I prefer "artificial sweetener" in my tea sometimes, as opposed to real sugar. big grin

I didn't get the joke- maybe it's all out of context? confused

The whole thing did strike me as very negative and homophobic, and I didn't get any of the self knocking macho angle. Perhaps if the groom at the wedding (as oppose to the priest) and maybe even one of the "gaybusters" as the punchline had been outed from the closet you'd have something remotely humourous. As it stands it just seems homohobic, and given your track record on here, Fresh Breath, sadly it shows you in a very poor light. Thor and I know you are a decent bloke, so you are letting all of us down when you do something like this. frown

To me the humour looked a bit 'Eurovision' ... in a style that's well behind that of Britain and America's humour. The clip being out of context may be important.

STEVENJ: "DON'T FEED THE TROLL", indeed. This is totally new to me, but hopefully it is a phrase others will post more frequently until the trolls begin their hibernation phases. THANK YOU for this bit of info!

I have to totally sympathize with Joan however. She's only one of just a tiny handfull of women posters to this board and she's been treated shabbily to say the least. That one poster just continued his tirade upon her to no end. No way to treat a lady. Still, Joan is one tough cookie who can more than take up for herself, still, she shouldn't have to fight alone, though she's more than well suited up with Kryptonite Armor! Still...no way to treat a lady!

Well I have just put the "Nitwit of Norway" on Ignore. I've had enough of his trolling.

I must say that I get a giggle whenever I see someone claiming to be non-discriminatory who then refers to someone as "a gay". Ya know, like "a retard" or "a freak" or this or that. That little "a" tends to de-personify and de-humanize.

Yep and I'm standing by it too. I've seen the shite that comes over the satellite from Germany, Italy & Spain.I'm not saying ALL of it is crap but a lot of it seems to be about 30 years out-of-date.

Mind you, having just seen "Labrats" on BBC2, it seems the UK can still produce world-class tripe as well. What a pile of stinking faecal matter that show is.

Joan is the "class act" here. No question. I think she truly believes she can find good and decency in everyone.

The proof, though, is in the puddin', as they say!
