"Desert island beverages"? I think you're gonna need a bigger boat.

Ha, ha. Yes, fair point.

Thor, you paint a family picture of almost 'Royal Wealth' access, and yet you scrabble around for loose change to buy beer and food on any given Tuesday!!
Have you been 'turned into the size of an ostrich' by the purse keepers of the family wealth?
Are your family the inventors of the 'C&C Soundtrack' and they black-listed you?
What gives?

Ha, ha. I can see how you get that impression. No, I still scramble around for the basics in my freelance life. The island is something my (extended) family inherited in the 1930s, and which I, along with my two siblings, recently took over a small fraction from my mother (about 1/23). But it's not going to be sold anytime soon, so any possible revenue is something I can't get.

I think I'm going to buy me a selection of Nøgne Ø beers (see earlier post) to bring along. That is fitting in so many ways, since the local brewery's name is taken from a Henrik Ibsen poem and is old Norwegian for 'Naked Island'.

To all!
What's your alcohol intake been like during the whole Corona Virus sh!t storm?
Have you downed way more than usual (beer and/or spirits) while the whole lock-down is/was a thing?
Or less, cos the pubs have been shut, so one's drinking 'to excess' might be curtailed?

To Kev - My already-excessive alcohol intake has increased dramatically. With the amount I've spent on booze in the past few months I coulda bought a boatload of really expensive CDs that I want.

I was happy when they opened some pubs here as I was worrying I was becoming an alcoholic!

Pubs are open up here (and, I assume, in the UK?), so while I was in Denmark over the last couple of weeks, I visited the pub on the pier every day at noon. But yes, while I've always binged on the drinking, the pandemic and isolation have given me extra incentive. I actually find it harder to come up with new things to drink; it seems to be the same selection of specialty beers and wines. So consume has gone up, while creativity has gone down.

By the way, I bought this bottle of Bache Gabrielsen XO cognac on the ferry between Denmark and Norway, which I intend to enjoy when I'm back in Oslo in a week or two; it's a Norwegian brand, and I tend to prefer Otard XO or VSOP, but my dad bought the same bottle, I sampled it and liked it enough to buy (it was also marked considerably down in the tax free shop onbard):

The arrival of the pandemic coincided with a major house renovation. I was trapped in the guest room, working on a laptop with two cats, their food, and their litter box. At that point, I was drinking every day just to stay sane. I was worried there would be a quarantine before the job was done, and we would be stuck in an unfinished house.

When the renovation was complete, things got a little more normal. I am back to my old routine - not drinking Monday through Thursday, and drinking Friday through Sunday. Sometimes I overdo it, but not too much.

Wow, what self-discipline! My goal is to do the same, but while I'm on holiday, or if the summer weather is nice, weekdays get their due too.

I'd say I stick to this probably 90% of the time. Sometimes there is an open bottle of wine from Sunday, and I may finish it on Monday night. Or, the stressful workday when I have to have a drink with dinner.

My alcohol intake has been well down these past 4 months or so.
I'd say my drinking takes place around 70% in pubs, bars, social events and friends/family get-together and about 30% in the house with meals, watching sports and nightcaps.
With the reduced out-doors stuff (haven't played footy since March, plus a lot less walking/running) I didn't want to become a tubby bastard and die of a heart attack, seconds after the first ball I kicked, so I deliberately avoided drinking for drinking's sake during these crazy times.
I live a pretty stress free life and the G-kids bring joy and happiness whenever I see them (which is often), so I'm a pretty happy camper.
But I do miss playing footy with the lads on a Thursday night.
"When the fun stops...Stop. Drink aware"
wink

I associate listening to LPs with drinking, and I listen to lots of LPs on the weekend. When I see the tone arm lowering onto the platter, I just want a drink in my hand. So it is very easy for me to drink at home.

"I associate listening to LPs with drinking"
------------------
That's interesting, Onya.
I would have to say that my association with my alcohol consumption is most tied to sports events (well, actually, just footy) and social gatherings. I guess that would be borne from the English (British?) teenage custom of 'going out with the lads' around the time you leave school/get a job (anytime between 16-20).
So my 'joy of drinking' was formulated with my school mates starting our 'rites of passage' (chasing skirt).
Plus, beer gave one the courage to approach girls/ask them out, so it was vital in my development wink (I wasn't quite sober when I plucked up the courage to ask Carole out 30 years ago).
Now, some 40 years later, I still drink most when I meet up with the lads/watch football games (I haven't developed much, have I) eek

I like to have a drink when I'm watching a film. Last night I was watching Deadwood TV series, so it was a (very) large glass of bourbon, with tons of ice (it was a very warm evening). I'm tending to drink every night these days, not much, a couple of glasses of wine or a glass of bourbon, but I know I should have a few nights off every week. The last time I was drunk was at a friends sons wedding, god, I felt ill for a week. That was a few years ago, their son has since divorced, remarried, & they've split up as well. Their daughter has invited me to her wedding, so I think they've forgiven me.

I've just returned to Oslo, but - as we talk about in the 'weather' thread - the summer has decided to come back in full. Corona restrictions have become tighter during my holiday, so they stop serving alcohol at midnight now. So instead of pubs, I've decided to go out to a friend's place tonight, at his apartment building's common roof terrace. Should be good, but hopefully with shade. It's boiling hot!

For drinking, 'bubbles' have been suggested (probably more prosecco than champagne), but I can rarely drink more than one glass of that. After that, my esophageal hernia acts up. But I'm bringing some obligatory white wine and a few beers (brand not yet decided).

What is your perfect 'summer drink'?

In the summer, I listen to primarily Latin jazz and exotica, and my drinks of choice are vintage rum cocktails.

In the fall, I transition to Old Fashioneds.

My favourite summer drink is Pimm's. Probably the only drink I have in summer and not the rest of the year.

For me, on a hot summer day, outside, I love one of those fruit flavoured ciders (Brothers, Kopparburg or some such) in a big glass crammed full of ice.
Nothing quenches my thirst and gets me started on that beer buzz quite like it.

This place has become the new family favorite. The brews are amazing and very high quality.
