France will scrap their League Cup from next season, leaving England as the only top Euro league with 2 cup competitions. It's time they dropped theirs too, or at least just have the football league teams competing in it. I don't see any reason for an extra cup competition anymore, as the FA Cup is dying as it is.

Sorry, but I totally disagree with scrapping the League Cup. Obviously it doesn't have the prestige of the FA Cup, but to me it's another step towards a European Super League to the benefit of the top clubs and the detriment of the small clubs. I don't have a dog in this fight, as my club is currently suspended between the two categories, albeit (I hope) on the way up.

What's going to replace the revenue of the League One and Two clubs who currently have a chance of doubling their annual revenue with games against much bigger teams that attract big gates? Many of them don't survive the first three rounds of the FA Cup, and the League Cup is another route to a big pay day. Unless more of that Sky money cascades, it could be the death of yet more small clubs. And don't forget, it's NOT Sky's money - it's ours. And many of the people buying Sky support those lower league clubs.

I think top footballers are pampered enough already. Let them have runs out at Mansfield, Stevenage, Oldham and Grimsby, might help keep their feet on the ground.

Some good points made by TG, esp' about the revenue it creates for the other/lower EFL divisions.
As a team in the privileged seats, I like that it gives the younger players and squad members some important game time, in a real win-or-lose scenario and allows the superstars to rest up for the more important (to me) League and European games.
And it's always nice to add a trophy at the end of the season, no matter the competition.

Isn't that what the FA Cup is famous for, 3rd Round giant-killing acts etc? Even when the "bigger" teams play lower league sides in the League Cup they just put out kids or second string sides and no one cares. I just don't see the need for another cup competition when one will do, in a season with an already over stuffed fixture list especially for the top teams competing in Europe.

Maybe a compromise would be to leave them out of it.

And now, ANOTHER footballing lesson for Joan[/ii]

Thanks, litefoot. The mind boggles. Following the Premier and Champions Leagues is about all I can handle, but I will follow this thread.

U r doing well, dear. wink

Ps: its Champions League, not leagues. In the words of Christopher Lambert, There is only 1! big grin

Technically, of course, in the way you created a plural with adding Premier, it could, at a pinch, be leagues in this case. But works just as well without the s. Just making sure you dont start adding s's to everything ...Tottenham Hotspurs, sheffield wednesdays, careless whispers, charlton Athletics, etc.... big grin

We don't really follow it. We take a cursory glance at the final scores, I suspect. Premier and Champions League is where it's at.

Just thought I'd mention it in case a match showed up on one of your American channels and you wondered what 'the Europa League' was and why there was football on a Thursday!

The champions league should be reduced to just the champions and not a league, just two legged play offs.

Same with Europa league. Just with the cup winners.

That instantly reduces the number of redundant games played by top clubs by about 80%.

The league cup is more interesting than either of those for me.
The euro cups were interesting before they became a money making grind with free get out clauses for top teams losing in the chumps league. They may as well just fix matches.

Oh wait...

I remember back in 90s early 2000s when there was never any football on a thursday!! It was guaranteed a football free night!

Asda are filming their Christmas ad in our small town back wom. Looks a million times better than in real life. TV ads may lie about reality.

Joan you don't have to bother with Europa or champions league until about April and it's down to the last few games. And then you can mis it altogether if your team isn't in it.

Thanks for the advice, Xebec. I'm hoping my team will still be there.

Now what can we all do about the very BORING thread title? Bill just ignores my very erudite title suggestions.

Sky creaming themselves about Tammy Abrahams.

In past seasons, a West Ham victory over Man Utd would guarantee the "Who Dares Wins Award", but since the latter have been such rubbish recently, the award will have to wait until all the weekend's matches have been played.

Oh, I was thinking of accepting sponsorship for the Who Dares Wins Award and renaming it...

The Carlsberg Who Dares Wins Award. big grin

Sky creaming themselves about Tammy Abrahams.

Makes a change from ManUre news. Headline on TalkSport this morning: "Greenwood shoots Man U to glory". Who were they playing again? The footballing giants, Astana FC. Of Khazakhstan! Whom they beat 1-0 at Fortress Trafford. I hope it was meant ironically.
