I picked up this disc from the band Slowdive. This was early 90's deep shoegaze. It is not all good, but the good is very impressive - and deeply shoegaze. Two tracks have Brian Eno, but those are not really my favorites. Alison, When the Sun Hits and Altogether are the strong tracks for me, immense, layer upon layers of guitars and electronics, and sometimes barely understood lyrics.
When it comes to the rock/metal genre, I usually lean toward the heavier side of the spectrum, but when the new Queensrÿche album caught my eye at a local record shop last week I decided to take a chance. The cover art looked wicked enough, but honestly, apart from a song or two on the radio many years ago (and despite their somewhat legendary status), I'd never heard anything by this band, so I went in cautiously skeptimistic, and thankfully, my risk was richly rewarded.
"The Verdict" is full of catchy, energetic, and much to my delight, downright heavy tunes featuring amazing musicianship, thought-provoking lyrics and outstanding vocal performances that don't shy away from the higher registers at moments of fist-clenching emotional crescendo, if you know what I mean. Heck, I'm almost tempted to check out some of their earlier stuff. Any recommendations?
Can't imagine how I missed this Joan Jett gem from 1986, getting hip to it only just now. Beach Boy harmonies, a little Sloop John B, a "Be My Baby" beat, a dash of "Wipe Out" -- probably even more hooks & licks I haven't caught yet -- and I would swear that's Darlene Love singing backup as the song moves into the last couple of glorious choruses.
And the video -- Sylvia Miles?!? What?!?!? (Wish the picture quality was better on this!)
I haven't played this in donkey's years, but I like it more than I used to. But man, it's long--a little tough to get all the way through it. Some really good moments on it though.
