FIVE STRINGS 'TIL DOOMSDAY (1972; TVM-CBS)
Directed by Don McDougall.
The embittered ex-sheriff (James Garner) of a small California town must come out of retirement to stop a psychotic banjo player (Steve Ihnat), who has kidnapped city officials and threatened to blow up the local dance hall. Laraine Stephens; Harry Morgan; Jo Ann Pflug; Victor French; Donna Mills; Claude Akins; Kaz Garas; and Milburn Stone as "Doc."

Any excuse by Phelps to include Steve Ihnat here. Ihnat yet again playing a kook. Somehow, it works.

THE DEVIL AND BROADWAY JOE (TV Movie, NBC, 1970)
Docu-drama of the alleged pact between New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath (Joe Namath) and Lucifer himself (Dan Blocker), which "guaranteed" that Namath's Jets would defeat the highly-favoured Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Julie Newmar; John Fiedler; Antoinette Bower; and Pat Hingle as "Weeb Ewbank." Luchi de Jesus' score won an Emmy.

Can't wait to rent this on VHS.

Very,
MaxB

Even a well worn copy of this rare title on VHS would probably cost a fortune today on ebay.

I would watch it just for Dan Blocker's performance alone.

I've been reading over this thread and think it's easily this forum's greatest topic. I don't know if non-participants even read the thing, but it's soooo good!

I read it (and love it), but don't have the creative brilliance to come up with my own entries...

Speaking only for myself, there's nothing brilliant involved! It's merely attaching an era's stars with its themes, hoping like crazy that it never got made and having fun!

By coincidence, and unbeknownst to me at the time, Melanie died age 76 on the same day I posted this entry.

Louis Garrel never met a film about a half-baked idea he didn't like (to direct).

Wow! I'd say this should be made with AI+CGI, but of course, it already was in our imagination by Indy's mindblender.

We see George Peppard winning the cigar smoking contest; William Conrad easily eliminating the competition (and seeking medical attention afterwards) after consuming 42 hot dogs; Buddy Ebson winning the wheelchair racing competition; Mike Connors handily winning the stuffed-with-lamb-and-rice-with-garlic-and-lemon-grape-leaves cooking competion (167 Lebanese "dolmades" made in 3 minutes); and Barry Newman being last in all categories, but ultimately the "real" winner in this excuse for a network program. Your hosts were Fran Tarkenton, Cathy Lee Crosby, and Tim Thomerson.
