Got the original soundtrack a few years ago as a gift.Was not impressed at all with the score apart from the faithful recreations of John Williams themes.Like a lot of Ottman scores, it is way too reliant on childrens choir.
The film really stank as well.Im glad it didnt do well enough to merit a sequel.

I thought the Kaplans' podcast was the most insightful analysis of this score (and of Ottman) I'd seen (heard). Wish it was still accessible somehow.

Superman Returns is an excellent score. One of the best releases of 2013 for me. As Giacchino-fan mentioned, all comments about this release so far have been posted in the main release thread, perhaps explaining why not many have jumped right away to post here, but a thread of its own is certainly deserved. There is such power, such wonder, such beauty, such energy, and such loving respect for Williams' original in this score. From the playful "Kitty Decoy" to the stately "Genesis Project" and all the wonderful new action music now expanded throughout, Superman Returns is a score that is best heard in full. I wasn't quite as involved with this film or its score at the time of its release, but I recall reading since then several negative comments about Ottman simply rehashing or even butchering Williams themes for Superman Returns. I have no idea how anyone comes away from this score with that impression. The reworked main theme is punchy and dynamic and full of that sweeping, soaring heroism we all expect when we think of Superman. And like yourself, I too love the opening Warner Brothers logo with the Superman tag on the end. Ottman seems to like doing that with his films as there's an X-Men tag at the end of the 20th Century Fox logo in X2, too.

I'm not sure what you mean by "reworked." Could you elaborate on this? All I noticed about it was that Ottman botched Williams' ending for the main title.
This kind of discussion is why I found the Kaplan podcast so useful. They weren't bickering or just badmouthing the score, but their audio samples demonstrated a good amount of temp-track-mimicry in it which might surprise you.

I mean just that: reworked. The themes are the same, but different parts sound emphasized or appear in different iterations throughout the score. It's plain for anyone to see that Ottman used Williams themes and played them very close to the original, and intentionally so, but he wove them in a respectful and beautiful way into the tapestry of his own great score. To my ears, of course.

I like SUPERMAN RETURNS a lot and happily bought the expanded CD. I was especially pleased to get Ottman's take on "The Planet Krypton." Of course, I consider Williams' original just about the greatest single film score of all time.

Whatever your thoughts about Man Of Steel, at least it was a bold new vision. Returns just felt like warmed up leftovers.
It's a matter of taste. I would rather have a good leftover casserole than a fresh plate of cabbage.
