Here're a couple interviews with him about his background and process for the show. I think the quantity of music he is asked to compose is way too much per episode. They are wall to wall music, and it really weighs the show down, suffocating out any chance for creative sound design or sonic breathing room. It's a poorly spotted show, and I hope Rebels lightens it up a bit. I thought Kiner did a terrific job. There were one or two spots where he relied on Williams’ original arrangements a little too heavily, but for the most part he did a terrific job of incorporating the classic themes with original material. Best moment: Taking the motif from when Luke tells Ben that R2 is looking for Obi-Wan ad using it for the Jedi. It’s such a subtle thing. And all the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end. Not best moment: Anything using Leia’s theme. I mean, it SOUNDED terrific, and fit the mood perfectly. But I’ve been trained for 37 years to know that that’s Princess Leia. Then again there’s no reason for Williams to have used Yoda’s theme on Cloud City and that sounded great too. He used the Star Wars version of Darth Vader’s theme! Hooray! I think I've seen an episode or two of CLONE WARS, and it didn't really connect with me. As far as the score goes, I felt that the references to Williams' original Star Wars score were a bit heavy-handed for my taste. I watched the first 10 minutes of the episode previously, during some sort of sneak peak, and it nagged at me. On second viewing I was ready for it and it was not so bad. I still hope that it was a special circumstance to capture some of that Star Wars original trilogy feel for the new viewers, and that Kiner will be able to strike out more on his own path in future episodes. This new show, and presumably the new movies, are designed to fit into that "original Star Wars" feel - as such, the tone is in the spirit of adventure serials with a sense of humor. Whether you personally will find it too "kiddie" is a matter of personal taste, but take the 45 minutes to watch the first episode and you'll know Clone Wars was wobbly at first, but improved with time and development, and somehow in the fourth season and beyond became very good-to-excellent, in my opinion.    Posted:   Oct 6, 2014 - 2:46 PM     By:   Solium   (Member) I really wanted to hear the classic themes more fleshed out. I actually thought the way they were used was quite annoying. It seemed like he would quote part of a theme but not finish it, then move onto something else musically. Only near the end did he fully use Williams classic themes. I'm fine with new themes, but if your going to use the old ones, then use them don't tease. As far as the series goes the animation was horrible. The hair and facial details are cheap. The Wookies looked like crap. Action scenes were not exciting. I do love the RM influences and it was cool seeing Tie Fighters again! But Disney spends 4.5 billion for this property then puts as little money as possible into producing the animation. Sad days for the legacy of Disney animation. Rebels may not be able to compete with Pixar, Disney, or Dreamworks’ finest, but for TV animation it’s really good. You might not like some of the choices of style (a lot of people don’t seem to like the hair) but what they have decided to do, they do well. This is still pretty expensive. I’m not damning with faint praise but there is so so so much worse. (Ohhhh so much worse.) Much better than the Clone Wars pilot movie, though. I also found the music jarring -- I appreciated the idea, but found the implementation not so great. The animation was mostly fine but the Wookiees were truly awful, and the stormtroopers looked like bobbleheads. The biggest drawback so far is that I just don't care about any of the characters, but here's hoping they grown on me. The first regular episode was better than the pilot but still not great. I enjoyed hearing some original Star Wars music, but as others have said, I hope Kiner can develop his own feel and themes that still sounds like SW. As far as the story goes, I believe that despite some bland characters it really felt like original trilogy SW in spirit. I haven't felt that way in a while, certainly not during the Clone Wars show (which had its own merits and weaknesses). It's hard to compare this with other CGI cartoons since I don't really watch any. I did check out Dragon's Riders of Berk and thought it looked better than this. In general cheap CGI is just that, cheap animation. My statement is really a commentary on the current state of Disney animation. Disney's 2D television animation of the 80's was much better than Ruby Spears and Hanna Barbara at the time.
