Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents the soundtrack release of REVENGE, featuring music composed by Jack Nitzsche (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, THE RAZOR’S EDGE, STARMAN) for the 1990 thriller directed by Tony Scott (THE HUNGER, TOP GUN, CRIMSON TIDE), starring Kevin Costner (THE UNTOUCHABLES, BULL DURHAM, DANCES WITH WOLVES), Madeleine Stowe (STAKEOUT, CHINA MOON, TWELVE MONKEYS) and the legendary Anthony Quinn (GUNS OF NAVARONE, ZORBA THE GREEK, LION OF THE DESERT), Tomas Milian, James Gammon, Sally Kirkland, Miguel Ferrer and John Leguizamo.

REVENGE tells the story of fighter pilot Jay Cochran (Cochran), recently retired from the Navy, who accepts an invitation from his friend, Tibey (Quinn) to visit him in Mexico and celebrate his retirement. Cochran arrives at Tibey’s mansion and encounters Tibey’s beautiful trophy wife, Miryea (Stowe). As they spend more time with each other, Jay and Miryea both begin to feel an undeniable attraction and in a moment of weakness, they give in to their desire. With the knowledge that Tibey is possessive and vindictive and a man of great power in the Mexican underworld, they struggle to keep their affair a secret. When Tibey discovers the relationship, he sets in motion a chain of events that will change all of their lives…

REVENGE was based on a 1979 novella by Jim Harrison published in Esquire magazine. With a script co-written by Harrison and Jeffrey Fiskin, the production was filmed entirely on location in Mexico (Puerto Vallarta, Durango, Mexico City, Cholula, and Cuernavaca, primarily) with cinematography by Jeffrey Kimball, who had worked with Scott on his previous two films.

Composer Jack Nitzsche had been recommended to Tony Scott by producer Ray Stark. After discussing Scott’s viewpoint on his film and the kind of music he had in mind, Nitzsche went off to his studio to compose the music, creating a predominantly synth-based score, centered around a beautiful love theme. Legendary guitarist Tommy Tedesco came in to play live acoustic guitar on several tracks. Live piano and guitar along with sampled pan-pipes and strings dominated the instrumental pallet along with percussion and a variety of synth tonalities.

Oscar-winning composer Jack Nitzsche (1937-2000) had come out of rock music, where he began his career as a songwriter before coming into prominence as an arranger and conductor for a number of notable producers, most significantly Phil Spector. He wrote his first film score in 1965, but it was in the 1970s and ‘80s that he began to focus on film composition more steadily, composing such works as HARDCORE, STARMAN, THE RAZOR’s EDGE, STAND BY ME and THE SEVENTH SIGN.

Previously released on compact disc by Silva Screen Records at the time of the film’s release, REVENGE has become difficult to find over the years. Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to bring REVENGE back into the marketplace, newly remastered by Digital Outland, along with previously unreleased music. With this remastered reissue of the REVENGE score, Dragon’s Domain Records are following Jack Nitzsche’s original album program that he sequenced for the 1990 Silva Screen original soundtrack release and adding several previously unreleased tracks to bring the program up to a proper CD length. A suggested listening sequence is contained in the liner notes.

REVENGE is a limited edition release of 1000 units. REVENGE will begin shipping the week of April 25th, 2016.

Good choice!

I used to have Revenge on CD, but I have since sold it. As much as I enjoy Nitzsche's music, I always wondered what other Scott-collaborators like Faltermeyer or Zimmer (or even Michel Rubini) could have done for the film.

Ordered. I love this score (film wasnt too shabby, either). Such a gorgeous love theme. Remastered with extra tracks? Wow. Could be one of my favourite releases of the year.

I have to say, NICE JOB! Been listening to this over the weekend. I sure miss Jack's music. Now if only we could get his Stand By Me score all 5 minutes of it, lol. Buysoundtrax release sounds great, great notes and all that jazz!

smile

Giving this thread a bump as my disc has arrived and its wonderful. Thanks Ford and all involved, this music deserves this treatment- theres some achingly beautiful music in this score.

I cannot believe there has been such little attention to this thread and the score. Come on guys this is wonderful stuff. The love theme alone is worth the price of this cd. Sad and melancholy and tender and warm... we don't get enough music like this today.

So I have to wonder what is the problem- is it the film or the composer or simply that the score is just not well known? I would have thought a re- release of this OOP album would get more attention. Hope its selling well anyway.

I have the original Silva release and like it muchly.
I didn't feel the need to upgrade, but when this was announced, I did dig it out and gave it another spin (and went on a Nitzsche kick, playing all the CD's I had by him), but yeah, it's probably that the film sank and Jack ain't exactly Goldsmith around here.

It's a fucking great movie. Tony's Scott's best in my opinion. Ignore the director's cut and go with the theatrical version. Critics dumped on this one when it was first released, but its reputation has grown over the years with many top filmmakers giving it huge props (including Tarantino).

How are the liner notes? Did Scott consider Zimmer, Faltermeyer or Rubini for the job?

A pity both composer and director are dead. So no new interviews about the music.

I think it's an excellent film. Kevin Costner and Madeline Stowe are very sexy in it and Anthony Quinn is a menacing villain. It's a tragic love story which is well reflected in the terrific score. I am glad to have this expanded edition. I bought this immediately once it was announced and agree more attention should be given to this reissue. Thank you, Dragon's Domain.

I just wish the Blu-ray and/or DVD would feature both the original theatrical version and the later "director's cut" (which is actually shorter, but that's a whole other thread...).

I agree...it's not perfect, but a solid flick overall. Certain pacing issues aside, the cast is great (especially Quinn) and the ending always gets me, no matter how many times I see it. Madeleine Stowe...dear god...gorgeous.

Beautifully scored by Nitzsche.

I have a German Blu Ray of the theatrical cut - which is the far better version of this film (and probably the only time I'll forgo a director's cut of a film). While I appreciate the hotter sex scenes in the D.C. I never watch it because I miss too many essential moments that Scott stripped out (something like 20 minutes of connective tissue). Keep in mind, the Director's Cut also dumps several great Nitzsche tracks - including the jeep ride cue - and replaces them with some generic Harry Gregson-Williams filler.

Really? Why on earth would they do that?

You must have a very different idea of an 'excellent' film, cause this one has a pretty awful 33% on rotten tomatoes. Although granted that Tony Scott, like his brother, knows how to make things look good. But this is not an excellent film. I mean excellent is like Lawrence of Arabia maybe Schindlers List something like that, Revenge - I do not think excellent

Fuck Rotten Tomatoes! Seriously, just fuck it right up the ass. That site has ruined film criticism and anybody who takes their recommendations from some thumbs up/thumbs down compendium of bullshit deserves the kind of movies they get to watch. Do you think MAN ON FIRE is a shit film? Well, I think it's fucking amazing and it only scores 39 percent. I can quote you a hundred examples of great - not just good - films that have been dumped on by Rotten Tomatoes. Do you really think the current score of SCARFACE on Rotten Tomatoes reflects the actual reviews of the day? They all shat on SCARFACE. Today, it's only revisionist reviews on RT. REVENGE and MAN ON FIRE will both be remembered as great films.
