A live action Disney film:
http://filmmusicreporter.com/2019/01/23/james-newton-howard-to-score-disneys-jungle-cruise/

I'm hoping for lots of wild percussion. I love when J.N.H. does his percussion stuff, usually in small doses, like those two cues in "Outbreak"*, or some stuff in "Dinosaur".

* = I actually took the two cues and edited them together rather nicely for sweet track.

I've long since lost hope that he will find back to the JNH that did DINOSAUR. It's not like there's been a shortage of great potential films in the last few years. But the proof is in the pudding, as they say. This could very well be excellent; JNH is usually very good at exotic/ethnic textures.

I think his "Fantastic Beast" scores are wonderful, full of charm and melody. I'm excited for this.

FANTASTIC BEASTS was one of those things I mentioned earlier -- such a promising 'canvas', such a disappointing result (except a track or two). His NUTCRACKER was a much better score last year, even if it's pure pastiche.

But hey, he's one of my favourite composers of all time. I'll keep out hope untill the bitter end.

I loved DINOSAUR. I'm ready for another score like that one. I remember about 18 or more years ago that we were all raving about that one cue, The Egg Travels. It was a stunning cue as a stand alone or synched to its visual. Also loved Across The Desert from that movie.

I hope another "jungle" movie inspires a replication (but unique) of the themes he did in DINOSAUR.

Agreed. If they wanted him to write that kind of music, he would have had the chance recently.

What world do we live in when I'm the positive one around here? Personally I think the two FB scores rank high on my list of best scores of the last decade.

New trailer today. The movie could go either way, and the trailer music is anonymous mass-produced gunk, but about three-quarters through, around 1:25 or so, a swashbuckling jig-type melody—utterly anachronistic to the musical proceedings thus far—gets briefly woven into the Zimmerment. Could this somehow be a snippet of a tune JNH wrote for the score? It's a long shot and it doesn't make much sense in context (since it pointedly doesn't play over the title a few seconds later), but it makes zero sense if it's nothing. See what you think:

His Nutcracker score is very enjoyable

Of course we're gonna get some lame rock song in the trailer.
But this is right up JNH's wheelhouse. He should do a bang up job on the actual score.

This film needs a strong dose of Les Baxter:

The very earliest trailers made it look like an out & out comedy, but the last couple of trailers concentrate on the fantasy adventure aspect. Whatever, it's best to avoid modern trailers, as they give far too much away. Anyway, it looks like a fun film.

Went to a test screening of this back in 2019 and they used a lot of Desplat tracks (especially from Harry Potter and The Golden Compass) as temp music, so I guess that gives a hint as to what it might sound like.

Well, if you ever wanted to hear a JNH Indiana Jones score...

First thing I thought of watching this scene was the Raiders Basket Game sequence. The music sounds great though.
