I'd love to have a complete recording of 'Hello Dolly', including the Prologue 'Call on Dolly' and, if possible, the score.
I'm not a big Barbara Streisand fan but I really liked her as Dolly.

That's actually not as insurmountable as it sounds, as Hollywood Records distributes through Universal Music Group.
Here is the real reason (and the bad news): After successfully saving Doctor Dolittle at great expense and effort in 2017 we hoped to follow up with both Hello, Dolly! and Star!... but both have been determined to be past all hope of saving. The mags have extreme vinegar syndrome and are toxic. This is a case where the battle was lost.

Valley was transferred and it's got a lot of wow. Not completely unworkable but it won't be a project at this time.

I believe the CD soundtrack from 1994 (the only time the soundtrack has been released on CD) was mastered from the original 20th Century Fox Records album tapes, not the mag reels that Mike M. is referring to. Although it would have been wonderful to hear the complete isolated score, I would settle for it on CD taken from the best remaining source even if it included sound effects. I know that goes against popular preference but perhaps it's an option. --George C. Konder

They did not reuse old almum 2 track tapes for the 1994 CD. They had access to the eight track tapes, sourced from the original unedited takes recorded on 35mm film. Sad that the tapes died on our watchs. -- MikeyKW
According to the CD liner notes, authored by one George C. Konder, "This new digitally remastered release, which marks the film's 25th anniversary, has been lovingly remixed for the first time since the original recording."
In any case, I think that MikeyKW meant to say that the 35mm film masters (not the album tapes, be they the 8- or 2-track versions) have died.

How did the Diary of Anne frank survive? Is it compete? is it in good shape?
While I am not Mike, I can guess that the tapes for Anne Frank were in good enough shape for LLL to plan an expanded version (I do hope we finally get that this year).

The loss of the original mags is just such astoundingly horrible news. Will the world end? No. But anyone with any kind of love of music, arranging, orchestrating and recording should feel the importance of this loss.
Man, I'm so frickin' sad.
I agree. When I hear of things like this, I try and console myself by thinking of all of the great stage performances that will never be seen again and all of the great unrecorded concerts that will never be heard again. Nothing is permanent. But at least we still have the completed film in decent shape, as well as the soundtrack album.

Yes, very sad. I was indeed referring to the 35mm mag at the studio and not to any album master material that was acquired by Polygram in 1982 and now resides in the vaults of Universal Music Group. Had it not taken so long to get to the point where we could do dual licenses, we might have done these projects years ago. Anne Frank was transferred successfully but I don't know what shape it's in.

Thanks for the clarification, MM. Was there any intermediates between the 35mm masters and the 2-track album masters? I thought I remembered there being maybe an 8(?)-track tape. I thought this was the source of the current CD; I had the original album years ago and I seem to remember a few small changes here and there in the music when I picked up the CD.
No intermediates at Fox. It's possible there are 8-track album masters vaulted at UMG. Once in a while, one has turned up at Fox, such as The Hustler. Generally in the case of musicals those have mixdowns of the orchestra, vocals, and chorus and occasionally contain a few bits planned for the album at some point but then dropped before the final release. In the case of Star! and Dolly there is nothing at the studio except for the mag stems that are now unsalvageable. I particularly mourn the loss of all the underscore.
