Oh, that's tricky. I'll need some time to think.

All I know for certain at this point is that TWIN PEAKS will be on top, always and forever.

I'm guessing threads like this will more often reflect people's nostalgic connection to TV series from their formative years than a more 'objective' evaluation of the musical content itself.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE

Doctor Who ('63 -'85/'96-2013)
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (original series)
Thunderbirds
Stingray
UFO
The Avengers (Laurie Johnson)
The Munsters
The Prisoner
The High Chaparral
The Persuaders

But ten is way too small. And I think maybe both the Irwin Allen and the Gerry Anderson shows should almost be lumped into one each.

Just my favorites of the top of my head...

Since so many themes flew around in my head right away, I sorted it a bit and I exclude here TV themes that are actually movie themes (like THE COWBOYS or STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION), and themes for TV miniseries, like SHOGUN, QB VII or MASADA, and just focus on regular multi-season one hour drama shows. So no miniseries, no animation, no sitcoms, no game shows etc., simply to narrow it down already a bit. (I love Cheers, Flintstones, etc.... maybe I do another one for those. :-)

STARSKY & HUTCH (Lalo Schifrin)

STAR TREK - VOYAGER (Jerry Goldsmith)

THE WALTONS (Jerry Goldsmith)

THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO (Patrick Williams)

THE PERSUADERS (John Barry)

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (Stu Phillips)

THE ROCKFORD FILES (Mike Post & Pete Carpenter)

KNIGHT RIDER (Stu Phillips)

THE MAGICIAN (Patrick Williams)

PETROCELLI (Lalo Schifrin)

I;m confused, jacky. In the title you says "themes", then in your post say best music for a series. Are we talking theme music or episodic scoring?

This is a genre in which the Brits win hands-down!

Easily top ... by a mile:

The Persuaders!

with other first class themes (in no particular order) from:
Danger Man (a.k.a. Secret Agent - hour episodes)
Man in a Suitcase
Department S
All Creatures Great & Small
Callan
The Sandbaggers
Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) (a.k.a. My Partner the Ghost)
Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)
Doctor Who [orig. and some variations but not all!]
The Prisoner
The Adventurer
Public Eye

... and more, e.g. I really like Hawaii 5-0 [orig.] and plenty of non-Brit themes, too smile

Two brilliant themes from the dark ages:

Perry Mason - Fred Steiner

Have Gun Will Travel - Bernard Herrmann
