SEASON 1:

Another one-season, short-lived series.

I've not seen it before, but I have faith on the scoring based on the composer roster.

Automan (the pilot)
By: Stu Phillips
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl0W-vp3JRA

Highlights:
  • 9:05 in.
  • 15:40 in. Millitaristic-like snare drum and brass.
  • 35:34 in.
  • 45:26 in.
  • 51:45 in.
  • 59:28 in.
  • 1:03:26 in.
  • 1:04:24 in.

Hints of his "Knight Rider" pilot score are heard.

Yeeeaaahhh, no -- I won't be watching this series, only skimming it for the score.

Stu, you're a braver man than I -- you actually sat through this to spot it!

"Staying Alive While Running a High Flashdance Fever"
    By: Morton Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0LD_GjcP7A

    Highlights:
  • 10:34 in.
  • 32:10 in. And the disco source music before it.
  • 44:43/45:37 in.

Goddamn -- the opening credits go on for three minutes in two parts!

    "The Great Pretender"
    By: Stu Phillips
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2ML2UfrcsU

    Highlights:
  • 3:38 in.
  • 11:07 in.
  • About 19:07 in.
  • 21:00 in.
  • 28:03 in.
  • 37:53 in.
  • 38:52 in.
  • 39:45 in.
  • 41:48 in.
  • 44:19 in.
  • 47:54 in.

Automan has Force lightning and general Force.
    UGH.

    "Ships in the Night"
    By: Stu Phillips
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNCBG_cock4

    Highlights:
  • 3:18 in. "Miami Vice" opening credits, "Automan" style.
  • About 9:00 in.
  • 24:11 in.
  • 37:43 in. And the Latin source music afterwards.
  • 40:53 in.
  • 43:12 in. boom ticka-ticka-ticka clack.

I get this cringy feeling when ever I have to sit through video of this to hear score.

    "Unreasonable Facsimile"
    By: Morton Stevens
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtJMhLmIL_c

    Highlights:
  • 3:19 in.
  • 26:00 in.
  • 37:08 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 41:50 in. And continued after the gunshot with crappy FX added over it.

I'm going to take a wild guess here, since Stu posts sometimes and might click into this thread because he sees his name and is curious, but I suspect Morton Stevens was hired for that one episode of "Knight Rider" because Stu recommended him (maybe even as a replacement that didn't turn out to work). Their names show up together on so many series.

    "Flashes and Ashes"
    By: Ken Harrison
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGlkzj3Va48

    Highlights:
  • 3:18 in.
  • 18:52 in.
  • 22:05 in.
  • 32:30 in.
  • 41:26 in.
  • 42:38 in.

    "The Biggest Game in Town"
    By: Stu Phillips
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByvMeS_nh_M

This is the final effort for the series by Phillips.

    Highlights:
  • 11:48 in.
  • 13:02 in.
  • 28:03 in.
  • 32:54 in.
  • 38:43 in. And after the commercial break.
  • 42:35 in.

    NO LOAD FOUND.
    "Renegade Run"
    By: Ken Harrison

This is the final effort for the series by Harrison.

Even though I'm still going through the series right this minute, I'm posting this now so incase something happens, I don't lose all this work. Back later with the rest!

    Continuing SEASON 1:

    NO LOAD FOUND.
    "Murder MTV"
    By: Morton Stevens

This is the final effort for the series by Stevens.

    "Murder, Take One"
    By: Peter T. Meyers
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prNR5FdSwQw

    Highlights:
  • 3:18 in.
  • 9:00 in.
  • 15:04 in.
  • 17:33/18:23 in.*
  • 24:43 in. Yes, it's short, but I like it.
  • 31:45 in.
  • 34:04 in.
  • 37:30 in. I didn't know Peter did funky cop-show like music until this episode.
  • 39:25 in. With Ride of the Valkyries worked in.
  • 4325 in.

    28:13 in:
Director Kim Manners: "Is that the boom mic I see the shadow of on the blue background?"
Boom Mic Operator: "Sorry, misses Manners. We'll do another take."
Director: "Fuck it, it's AUTOMAN; leave it in. I'm not sitting her and directing this shit again!"

    * = I got to say, for some a ... show .... I liked the cinematography of the scenes.

    "Zippers"
    By: Peter T. Meyers
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPA-CsvQXDE

    Highlights:
  • 0:24 in.
  • 8:53 in. Joining a cue already in progress.
  • 16:34 in.
  • 17:51 in.
  • 23:47 in.
  • 25:55 in.
  • 31:18 in.
  • 3722 in.
  • 41:20 in. Yes, I know it's short, but I like it.

30:00 in: Oh, once again, how hilarious bad they though robots would be.

    "Death by Design"
    By: Peter T. Meyers
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZzYaleATcs

This is the final effort for the series by Meyers.

    Highlights:
  • 5:05 in.
  • 21:34 in.
  • 28:25 in.
  • 31:08 in.
  • 33:08 in.
  • 34:39 in.
  • 42:28 in.

As far as I a concerned, Meyers and Phillips were the composers I wanted to hear more from on the series.

For the guys here: 12:15 in. You're welcome.
And 32:08 in. You're welcome again.

    "Club Ten" (series finale)
    By: J.A.C. Redford
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY1UB83AnrU

    Highlights:
  • 3:18 in.
  • 7:01 in.
  • 9:38 in.
  • 14:33 in.
  • 18:10 in.
  • 23:24 in.
  • 33:58 in.
  • 35:29 in.
  • 37:02 in.
  • 42:31 in.

On top of Automan having super-pursuit mode, he can also see into things like Superman.
    UGH.

How did this make it to twelve episodes???
I know, I know, other crap made it even further.

Put me down for a volume or two of this.

    ADDITIONAL/UNCREDITED/STOCK MUSIC COMPOSERS:

    Culled from ASCAP and BMI:

  • William Hinsche (listed for cues, but he did the theme music; perhaps he did more or even had a score tossed with some left in; also listed in a separate entry with Phillips)

  • John Peter Smalley.

  • David Fisher. (listed as a source music and/or arranger on various episodes of "the Fall Guy", so I suspect he did the same thing here for Stu).

I - just - got this series and Manimal on DVD over the weekend. What wonderfully light 1980's adventure fun! Back when the airwaves were dominated by Glen Larson, Stephen Cannell, Don Bellisario and Aaron Spelling!

If you watch this series with a nitpicky or critical eye, you're doing it all wrong. It's just good fun.

"Gemini Man" was good fun. This is only a step or two above "Holmes & Yoyo".

Thanks again, Justin for including the Stevens material in these shows. It is MUCH appreciated.

I picked up AUTOMAN on DVD just for the Stevens material:-)

    Automan was on DVD?!?

I saw Chuck Wagner in Les Miserables as Javert. He was astonishingly good.

Oh man. This and "Manimal" were like the Glen Larson crap-mageddon. Actually remember watching them first-run (ten year old me: "This is shit!")

That theme has stuck with me over the 30+ years since I saw the show on its only run on Australian TV when I was a kid. I was pleasantly surprised that, when watching those YouTube links, my memory of that theme recalled every part of those opening credits.

Love the theme, but hated the SFX. You can find a synth version for download on Amazon, with some "Cursor"-like bleeps but no screams or gunshots. It doesn't have the opening bars, but combining those with the download produces a better product than either alone.

I also loved the square turns. (Desi Jr smashed against window, thugs attempting and smashing into things!) So did my kids.

Yes it was dumb, but it was fun. Chuck brought a goofy seriousness that made his scenes fun. Still, not something I can binge. One episode at a time for me.

Oh man. This and "Manimal" were like the Glen Larson crap-mageddon. Actually remember watching them first-run (ten year old me: "This is shit!")

HA! Me too! But I still watched it. Every stupid week. I miss the 80's...

    You're welcome, MRAUDIO.

Well, this thread sparked my next television viewing horror for the sake of the music...

    Justin,

Dave Fisher did not work for me. He worked for Glen. Glen picked all of the hit recordings he wanted in the show. (He said he used Dave because he "didn't want to bother me with trivial matters.") If Fox could not get a reasonable license fee, then Dave Fisher would do a "sound-a-like recording.

If you watch this series with a nitpicky or critical eye, you're doing it all wrong. It's just good fun.

It's pure torture... not sure what is the biggest pile of trash - Automan or Manimal?
So stupid it is not even funny.

Well, I have a good time watching this stuff, but then again, I'm not all that picky or demanding. I've sat through worse hours of television.

Thanks Stu for the clarifications. :-)

I wonder if I link Meyers to the thread if he'll jump in (assuming the e-mail for him is still good).

For me it's not about demanding, it's more along the lines of insulting. Plus, I can't excuse something just because I've seen worse. Bad is bad.

And sad to say, but in the pursuit of hearing unreleased score I've not heard before, I've watched/ skimmed some real shit.
