Is this the same story that spawned the gorgeous Preisner score in the 90s? Yes, it's an adaptation of the same novel. If so, consider me stoked. I've been waiting for many, many years now to have Marianelli back to his old, beautiful post-minimalist romanticism. These last few years, he's basically been doing "things he doesn't know" in order to adher to contemporary trends. IMHO Marianelli has been trying to avoid getting categorized as a classical-romantic composer for period movies. Instead, he's been doing what I believe are "things he really does know" very well, like his great score for the animated Kubo and the Two Strings (it's amazing when you read and realize what the music tells within the film), or the adventure-comedy-family film Paddington 2, full of fun and beautiful themes (the train scene at the end is fantastic). Also his minimal-non-romantic score for Darkest Hour would be a good example. But that's only my opinion, I suppose those examples are not your cup of tea. However, have you watched "Ali and Nino"? It's a beautiful and very romantic score. Unfortunately there is no digital or cd release yet.

I wonder if he's going to play piano strings with a bunch of leafs or some shit.

Haven't heard ALI & NINO, no. I'll check it out. I haven't really cared that much for any Marianelli since 2011, with the double whammy of JANE EYRE and SALMON FISHING IN YEMEN. And that includes the titles you mention, something is 'lacking'. I haven't loved most of his stuff after that point as well, to be honest...but 'Kubo and the Two Strings' stands out among his works since then (for me, at least)...even just the track "Monkey's Story" makes the score worth purchasing (again, for me). That being said, I always get excited about a possible Marianelli score...and I'm hopeful about this new one...it seems a great opportunity for him to flex his skills.

It looks like this is available on iTunes to rent (the movie)...any word on a score release? I'd like to rent to check it out...but it's $20...which is kind of a lot to rent when I mostly just want to listen to the score

Not sure if this one will be to my liking but I really enjoy Marianelli's scores for Jane Eyre, The Darkest Hour and Everest. Atmospheric, brooding stuff.

It's up on Qobuz now, for those with subscriptions. Listening now; so far this is top-drawer Marianelli. Delightful!]
