It doesn't seem official, but according to IMDb Dario Marianelli is working on the new adaptation of The Secret Garden, directed by Marc Munden, and produced by Rosie Alison and David Hayman, producers of Paddington.

Is this the same story that spawned the gorgeous Preisner score in the 90s?

If so, consider me stoked. I've been waiting for many, many years now to have Marianelli back to his old, beautiful post-minimalist romanticism. These last few years, he's basically been doing "things he doesn't know" in order to adher to contemporary trends.

Yes, it's an adaptation of the same novel.

If so, consider me stoked. I've been waiting for many, many years now to have Marianelli back to his old, beautiful post-minimalist romanticism. These last few years, he's basically been doing "things he doesn't know" in order to adher to contemporary trends.

IMHO Marianelli has been trying to avoid getting categorized as a classical-romantic composer for period movies. Instead, he's been doing what I believe are "things he really does know" very well, like his great score for the animated Kubo and the Two Strings (it's amazing when you read and realize what the music tells within the film), or the adventure-comedy-family film Paddington 2, full of fun and beautiful themes (the train scene at the end is fantastic).
Also his minimal-non-romantic score for Darkest Hour would be a good example.

But that's only my opinion, I suppose those examples are not your cup of tea. However, have you watched "Ali and Nino"? It's a beautiful and very romantic score. Unfortunately there is no digital or cd release yet.

Haven't heard ALI & NINO, no. I'll check it out. I haven't really cared that much for any Marianelli since 2011, with the double whammy of JANE EYRE and SALMON FISHING IN YEMEN. And that includes the titles you mention, something is 'lacking'.

I am curious if the new movie will surpass the BBC series from 1975 or the quite good 1993 movie.

I prefer the BBC version in terms of staying true to the book, but I adore the music and the mood of the 1993 movie. Now if they could combine these two, that would be great.

Greetings from Germany...please be gentle with my english lines. big grin
Oh and by the way, this is my first post after many years of being a read only guest. wink

Actually, there are at least five of them. Not sure it can remain a secret for long.

Benjamin Wallfisch, perhaps?

It seems the kind of movie that have plenty of space (landscapes, magic, kids playing, etc) for good music... a kind of gift for any composer, hope Marianelli takes advantage of it.

I haven't loved most of his stuff after that point as well, to be honest...but 'Kubo and the Two Strings' stands out among his works since then (for me, at least)...even just the track "Monkey's Story" makes the score worth purchasing (again, for me). That being said, I always get excited about a possible Marianelli score...and I'm hopeful about this new one...it seems a great opportunity for him to flex his skills.

Yeah, I know people were going mad over KUBO, but that didn't do anything for me at all, unfortunately.

It looks like this is available on iTunes to rent (the movie)...any word on a score release? I'd like to rent to check it out...but it's $20...which is kind of a lot to rent when I mostly just want to listen to the score

Where did you find it? Is there a release date?
I've seen (and listen while working) the film several times already. The score is wonderful. With a mixed vibe of Jane Eyre (for the darkest and ghosty parts) and the vitality of I Capture the Castle (with little motif ideas of Agora and some other joyfull music). Really looking forward to this release. The movie has quite a lot of music, lets see if the cd has the right amount but I feel they kept a good portion of it unreleased.

Not sure if this one will be to my liking but I really enjoy Marianelli's scores for Jane Eyre, The Darkest Hour and Everest. Atmospheric, brooding stuff.

Strange that the last Marianelli's score I really liked was Anna Karenina... everything since has been pretty much forgettable and this seems to be no exception.

It's up on Qobuz now, for those with subscriptions. Listening now; so far this is top-drawer Marianelli. Delightful!]
