Screen Archives Entertainment is proud to announce a 3-CD Max Steiner compendium SADDLES, SAGEBRUSH, AND STEINER: WESTERN SCORES OF MAX STEINER, featuring music from eight of the famed composer’s western epics.

With music from VIRGINIA CITY, SANTA FE TRAIL, SAN ANTONIO, DALLAS, ROCKY MOUNTAIN, THE CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER, THE LION AND THE HORSE and RATON PASS, this album gives a broad representation of Steiner’s approach to scoring a genre of motion pictures that was distinctly American. The CD’s include all of the surviving music from the scores represented, including music not used in the films and alternate tracks featuring Max working the orchestra.

VIRGINIA CITY was intended as a follow-up to DODGE CITY but became a Civil War espionage drama. SANTA FE TRAIL, also set during the war between the states, centered on the effort to apprehend abolitionist John Brown. DALLAS was a Gary Cooper vehicle in Technicolor that favored action over melodrama. ROCKY MOUNTAIN found Errol Flynn facing a rare fateful ending on the screen and THE CHARGE AT FEATHER RIVER was Max’s only score for a film released in 3-D. THE LION AND THE HORSE was a modern western that was aimed at the family trade and RATON PASS featured hard-hearted Patricia Neal scheming for control of a ranching empire.

All scores, recorded at Warner Bros., feature orchestrations by Hugo Friedhofer and Murray Cutter and were conducted by Max Steiner. In addition to the soundtracks, the box set features a 40 page full-color booklet with essays by James V. D’Arc and Ray Faiola, as well as a generous amount of original photographs and publicity material. Disc mastering by Ray Faiola, Chelsea Rialto Studios. Package design by Jim Titus.

A Brigham Young University Film Music Archive Production. All proceeds from this limited edition compact disc set go towards the acquisition, preservation of film music elements and future public releases.

Just got on the computer today. Wow! What a great surprise! Max is my favorite composer so this is most welcomed. Max was especially great at scoring westerns, this will be a very colorful box of Steiner westerns. And a big booklet too! I always enjoy reading the booklets while playing the CD's. This has really made my day! smile

Thanks to Ray, James, Jim, Craig and all involved! smile

Track 34 of Disc One, "Max complains about the delicatessen" sounds dramatic.

I really liked the Dark Side of Max and I will probably get this new collection even though I fear it will contain a lot of what I like least in Steiner's scores, plenty of traditional tunes worked into the score. I will probably want to do a good bit of editing...

Is there really a character called Van Cleave in RATON PASS, or is it some kind of in-joke? Those track titles had me smiling ("Ambushed by Van Cleave" etc).

Maybe the food was giving the orchestra stomach gas. They say Max shot a man just for farting.
