Hmm I wonder if this movie will be a big piece of shit.

Not necessarily excited about the score (I'm fairly confident I know what I'm going to get -- unless Beltrami pulls another 'delicious darkness' score in the style of MIMIC; one can only hope!), but I'm VERY excited about the film. Yes, it's basically an underwater ALIEN (or another riff on LEVIATHAN, DEEP STAR SIX, that kind of thing), so I'm not expecting anything original; but a wellmade, A-list value underwater horror. I'm a sucker for those, regardless of their ambition! MEG was one of my favourites two years ago....

In short: BRING IT ON!

Some reviews I've read point in the opposite direction. Who knows?

uh, 47 on Metacritic says it is not that great

Well, there's only one way I will know if it's great or not...and that's when I go and see it.

Now that is a very erudite statement. On this board, we tend to judge scores and movies before we've heard the score or seen the movie.

Dunno...I kinda miss lame underwater movies like the soggy summer of 89 gave us.
Album looks 'digestible '.
Beltrami & Sanders are aight.
Maybe we will be ok here....maybe...BIG M.

If movies were free I would not be that interested in reviews as a tool. But even then, I think it was Roger Ebert, who saw movies for free, who said he felt robbed of the time when he saw a bad movie. The idea that I have "nothing to lose" in seeing a movie that is probably bad is silly. So I read the reviews and take it into account. And yes, I sometimes disagree with the reviews.

I agree, Ado. I don't want to pass judgement on a movie before I've seen it, but I do read early reviews. If the reviews are mostly positive, I will pay for a theater ticket. If reviews are pretty negative, I can always wait for the movie to come on cable or arrive at Redbox because that is much cheaper.

I know what you mean, and I'm well aware that I'm privileged to see movies "for free" (a relative term, since it's work-related). But I often see such advance negativity for 'genre fare' like this, which bewilders me a bit. How about having a positive, or at the very least a neutral attitude when you go into a movie -- whether it's an underwater monster movie or Ingmar Bergman?

It is just practicality Thor. There are only so many movies I can see, only so much time and money I can spend on it, so the reviews play a factor. And in large part, if the scores on Meta are showing a low aggregate then there is something to it. Yes, I enjoy some movies that have been critically beaten. I just do not have the practical means to check all the movies myself to see if I like them. Joan has a good point also, that some of them might be explored later, at home streaming.

Leviathan- Deep Star Six have already been mentioned.

Can’t beat JG scoring a pile of shit and turning in gold.

The cinema I watch films in costs £6 a ticket at all times.
They have a deal, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, wherein you can get a 2 for 1 on that.
That's 3 QUID to see ANY latest film on a proper good BIG cinema screen with Dolby Atmos.
So I'll pay the same to see 1917 AND Underwater, two forthcoming films of which the subject matter interests me.
I'd have missed SO MANY FILMS I've loved if I'd listened to the critics/general consensus.
If a film piques my interest, I'll go see it no matter what other people are saying.
That's just me.

That's crazy cheap. A cinema ticket in Norway is -- if converted to pounds -- £11 for the cheapest (standard screening) to €26 for the most expensive (IMAX, VIP seats). It's not possible to watch a film in the cinema anywhere in Norway for £6.

General prices are around £9 to £12*, Thor, but this particular ODEON is crazy cheap cos they haven't become on of those new doss houses yet (the ones with the reclining sofa chairs and extendable tables to eat your body weight in crap) so they've reduced the prices cos it's old school.
I couldn't believe it myself when they honoured the 'meerkat 2 for 1' deal on the already low price smile

*and yes, more quids for the IMAX/I-sense style screenings

I would see this, eventually when it opens in Spain.

About the score, it's OK, interesting mix between sound desings (nice synth-vocals) and orchestra, with pleasent theme for Kristen Stewart's character.

This is an interesting review. Made me want to see this movie.

(Sounds pretty "relentless." Guess I'll have to fly to Liverpool and go see it with Kev and Mrs. Kev. He can hold our hands. wink)
