I'm not certain, but I think Thomas Newman has been nominated 15 times, and lost every time! I haven't seen the Oscar Show for nearly 10 years now, but I recall that in years past when he was nominated and the 'other guy' would win, sometimes on their very first nomination, he'd try to put on somewhat of a 'pleased face' for the television cameras. But, that must have gotten old long ago, HOW does he do it? If YOU were Mr. Newman, would you even bother to go to the ceremonies? He may lose again this year to someone on their first nomination, yet again.
Since there is only one score worthy being nominated on that poor list (and Newman's lazy sound design isn't it) there is no reason why he should win this time.
Since Newman is composing more scores like this and he said in an interview a few short years ago he's moving more toward these types of scores and essentially ad-libbing cues on the stage, it's unlikely he'll win anything in the future unless his competitions simply sucks so bad he's the stand out.

Well, his TOLKIEN was a far superior score this year, and nothing like 1917 at all. Of course, the film is mediocre, so there would be no chance of a nomination. But it's certainly among my top 10 favourites.
I think 1917 is a great score in that it really enhances the movie. I still suspect that the momentum is for JOKER. The only way I see 1917 winning is if it part of a larger 1917 sweep, which may happen.

Agreed. We, here, tend to consider scores Oscar-worthy only if it is a great listening experience in itself. 1917 is not the usual melodic score by Newman but it surely fits and elevates the film it is written for, therefore it is definitely Oscar-worthy in my book.
It's David Newman I feel sorry for. Brother Thomas and Cousin Randy are quite often nominated for the scores they write, but the one banging out the most fantastic and exciting film music barely gets a look in He should have bagged an Oscar for his glorious scoring of ANASTASIA.

My feelings as well. Thomas has never connected with me - my loss, not his - and Randy I enjoy but David is someone who's music I constantly look for. Malone is one of my all-time favorite scores and seeing David conduct his father's work at Tanglewood last year was magnificent.
That said, the Oscar noms are very strong this year. I've only heard the Williams score but the names are all talented people.
I just hope Desplat doesn't win... as delightful as I find his Little Women score to be, I think it would be just TOO unjust for Thomas Newman to lose to a Little Women score, when his own was arguably the greatest thing he ever wrote (and IMO the greatest music ever written for the story).
Personally I'll be happy for Williams to net an Oscar for his final Star Wars score. Even though he of course has enough Oscars. Newman'll be nominated again. (And yes, David is my favorite current Newman too, even though I very much also appreciate Randy and Thomas.)

Unless 1917 starts sweeping awards, it's likely Joker's to win.
Oh, look who crashed the party, with their SAME OLD SHIT!!!
I hear you, Kev.
Why is it woke because one composer is female? What should count is how well all 5 scores supported their films.
(I don't know who should win the best score this year as I haven't heard all FIVE of the scores or seen all 5 movies and therefore am unqualified to give an opinion.)

I haven't seen ANY of the 5 nominated film(s) scores. Please explain to me what you mean by 'lazy sound design'. A couple of other members have also mentioned Thomas's 'unusual or new' type of music score he wrote for this film and is now incorporating into his new works. What does this mean? Is it electronic, or orchestral music? I really don't know what's changed with his music writing these days, if anything.
