John Barry: Body Heat

I'll second that nomination, and add also Art Pepper's amazing sax work in Jerry Fielding's score for THE ENFORCER -- listen to that Main Title some time and you'll hear what I'm talking about!

Midnight Run by Danny Elfman.

I'm assuming that's a saxophone that's quite prominent throughout, but might be wrong as i have little idea about instruments.

Since this question is not limited to film scores, one of my all time favorite moments of the saxophone in ANY orchestral setting occurs in THE WOODEN PRINCE by Béla Bartók, which all of a sudden features three saxophones yearning and contemplating, but never overstating their point... as great a musical (dramatic) highlighting for any instrument as I have ever heard in any composition. It is just a short musical moment.... but wow, what a moment.

Ronnie Lang playing alto sax on John Barry's Body Heat. This was even mention in Michael Segell's book The Devil's Horn: The Story of the Saxophone, From Noisy Novelty to King of Cool

My three favorites, alphabetically by film title (meaning no attempt to list by preference):

BODY HEAT - John Barry; Ronnie Lang, soloist
THE HOT ROCK - Quincy Jones; Gerry Mulligan, soloist
THE RUSSIA HOUSE - Jerry Goldsmith; Branford Marsalis, soloist

I love those for what the solos contribute to the character of the respective films, as well as for the beauty of the individual performances.

Would Waxman’s A Place in the Sun count? I don’t remember how extensively it’s used in the actual film, but do know the saxophone is very effectively used in the concert suite.

Like Henry in the first post, when I think of "sax" in a film score, I immediately hear BABY BOOM and ST. ELMO'S FIRE. And I like those a lot. Right now they are my faves. And definitely Bill Conti's CAGNEY & LACEY TV Theme (the Sax parts), to be sure!

Anybody feeling "Horn"y? I'd buy all of these fabulous musicians a beer! And that guy on tambourine at 1:09 is surely earning his beer!

Here you go!
