La-La Land Records, Synthesis Entertainment, 20th Century Studios and Legendary Pictures proudly present VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA – ORIGINAL TELEVISION SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION: LIMITED EDITION, a deluxe 4-CD collection of original music from the classic Irwin Allen 1964-1968 sci-fi/deep ocean adventure television series!

This beloved series, an exciting whirlpool of espionage drama, spy suspense, submarine action and creature features, showcased state-of-the-art effects that would blaze a trail for Allen’s LOST IN SPACE, TIME TUNNEL and LAND OF THE GIANTS to follow in its wake. A vital part of this series’ success and timelessness are its knockout episode music scores, which prove to be some of the finest examples of the era’s orchestral television music.

Featuring music by composers Alexander Courage, Robert Drasnin, Jerry Goldsmith, Lennie Hayton, Joseph Mullendore, Nelson Riddle, Paul Sawtell, Herman Stein and Leith Stevens, this deluxe 4-CD set, limited to 1000 units, is produced by Jeff Bond and Neil S. Bulk, executive produced by Kevin Burns, executive produced for 20th Century Studios by Mike Matessino, and digitally edited and mastered by James Nelson.

Among the many musical treasures to be found within this exciting release are an expanded presentation of the "Jonah and the Whale" score by Jerry Goldsmith, as well as main and end titles Goldsmith wrote for the show, along with a bumper, and a previously undiscovered, completely different, high-energy never-used main and end title Goldsmith was asked to provide later as an alternate. The set also features scores by Alexander Courage, Leith Stevens and Nelson Riddle that incorporate Goldsmith's theme for the Seaview submarine.

Additionally found here are several versions of the popular Paul Sawtell main and end titles that were retained throughout the series, including the fourth season arrangement recorded by Leith Stevens, both the long and short, editorially-created end titles, and bumpers based on the Sawtell theme heard in the first and fourth seasons. Among the five hours of underscore much of the most familiar and often-repeated music from the series can be heard, including a number of cues written to accompany the show's early second season introduction of the Flying Sub.

Co-Producer/writer Jeff Bond takes you to the Bottom of the Sea and beyond with exclusive, in-depth liner notes that journey you through a photo-packed 40 page booklet! The mission-ready art design is by Mark Banning. This special release is a limited edition of 1000 units.

So in 5 years when you're looking to bump a discussion, you are more than welcome to use brain cells to remember the date on which this set was released.

For those of us who use more helpful search terms, here is an easy-to-remember thread title.

I am particularly excited about the Leith Stevens scores.

I had no idea that the main theme was by Jerry Goldsmith!

The series theme was by Paul Sawtell. The Goldsmith theme was used only in one episode. But it was used in later scores by other composers. Most likely they thought it would replace Sawtell's theme.

Only for one episode.

And we finally get Sawtell's great extended End Titles piece!

Sawtell's theme is a better fit overall, but Goldsmith's theme is great for the early second season. And both themes were integrated well into the episodic scores by other composers. John Williams, for all of his massive talent, didn't create easy to use themes for Irwin Allen's shows. So, Voyage was the only one of Irwin's shows to weave the main themes into the scores. It's all good stuff!

Some of my favorite "Star Trek" scores are those written by Alexander Courage for Irwin Allen TV shows.

They generally sound like "Star Trek" music, but you don't get pummeled by that stupid "Star Trek" fanfare every two minutes.

The Cyborg and The Lost Bomb are my favorites of Courage's TV work. Really good stuff. He uses the Voyage theme a lot and it works very well.

Alexander Courage was on fire back then. I think he recorded his "Cyborg" score between the scoring of ST: TOS's first and second pilots.

Nobody referred yet to what Mike Bailey wrote about "And 5 Of Us Are Left":

"Mike Says: I have a real (dare I go ahead and say it?) BITCH with the music that all but destroys the effectiveness of this episode. Heavy-handed whining violins tell you when to feel sad or upset for the characters. This episode is saddled with some of the worst of this sort of manipulative film music I've ever heard, and it really ticks me off because the rest of the production is quite good, including the script. And then, during the big climactic action scene . . . no music at all. Whoa is me! What could John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith have done with this episode? BOO on episode composer Lennie Hayton!"

Not I. smile True, it isn't my favorite "style"* but it is quality music, very listenable and quite importantly, traversing the first leagues to Voyage the Bottom of the Sea. Complete! smile

Edit (15/07/2020): Specifically, I was referring the to faux asian (or ersatz) cues in Mr. Layton's score. A detailed discussion on the subject occurred later in the thread, around July 12th. The rest of the score is aces. smile

The late Mike Bailey was a nice guy and I loved his website, but he and I disagreed on a LOT when it came to the episodes, and this was one of them. There are some real gems in this one. As for the finale, the episode was already filed with music. The finale was cataclysmic enough that underscore was unnecessary. Good composers know when NOT to add music as well.

I'm often amused at superfans' take on music in the shows they love. There's a "critical overview" book of Irwin Allen's shows that trashes Leith Stevens repeatedly, pointing out his Lost in Space "Blast Off Into Outer Space" score as one of the show's worst (it's my favorite of the non-Williams LIS scores), and the same author lambastes Stevens' Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea scores for sounding too much like his Land of the Giants work--which was done later, as the author obviously had to know.
I definitely wanted Hayton's "...And Five Of Us Are Left" score on the set because it contains some iconic music for the Seaview and Flying Sub. It's also one of the series' only character-based scores in terms of it providing distinctive music for its lone Japanese character--sympathetic music, which is apparently what turned the above critic off. You can't win! smile

Jon Abbott's book? Yeah, he had some "interesting" takes on the shows.

He loved Time Tunnel the most and hated most of the Voyage episodes I liked. Submarine Sunk Here was a dud to him, but later 3rd season episodes were all well and good.

I really need to spring for your book, Jeff....

BTW the score for that episode is one of my favorites. For the reasons you mention as well as just being effective (the finale cue is on a ton of episodes - although edited to lose the "warble") and there's a great act-out cue late in the episode, as the Seaview is about to be jammed into the channel. Great stuff.

Yes, it's my favorite of Hayton's Voyage scores. Hayton's music was more traditionally naval while Stevens I think got the naval, nautical sound but added a modernistic edge to it that was perfect for the show.
