Jacob’s Ladder 30th Anniversary Expanded Edition (2-CD)
Maurice Jarre
Limited edition: 2000 units.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary, Quartet Records and Studio Canal proudly present a 2-CD expanded, remastered edition of the original score by Maurice Jarre (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, A PASSAGE TO INDIA, WITNESS, GHOST) to Adrian Lyne’s drama-horror classic JACOB’S LADDER.

The film centers around Vietnam War veteran Jacob Singer (Tim Robbins) who is being haunted by memories of the war and the death of his son Gabe (an uncredited Macaulay Culkin). To uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation, Jacob must separate reality and life from his own dreams, delusions and perceptions of death.

Jarre's music is a fascinating journey through fear and paranoia, comprising orchestral, choral and electronic background (with an ensemble led by Michael Boddicker) with contributions from instruments such as the duduk and shakuhachi as well as percussive effects. This score is among his most imaginative, claustrophobic and paranoid efforts—one that has developed a cult following.

Varèse Sarabande released the score in 1990, presenting it in five long suites prepared by the composer himself. As was common in his own concept albums during the ’80s and ’90s, these suites were not necessarily chronological and included some alternate mixes that were different from those heard in the film. From the albums prepared by Jarre in that period, JACOB'S LADDER was especially brilliant in presenting a harrowing horror trip. However, some relevant parts of the score were left out of the album presentation, so now we are glad to present two different approaches to this fascinating musical universe. Disc 1 offers the original album completely remastered, while Disc 2 presents the film score in chronological order, including cues not used in the final cut as well as alternate mixes.

This collection has been expertly produced by Neil S. Bulk, mastered by Doug Schwartz, and includes in-depth liner notes by film music writer Daniel Schweiger, based in part on new interviews with director Adrian Lyne, screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin and musician Michael Boddicker.

This is actually one of my favourite Maurice Jarre soundtracks. One of the few times he succeeded with synths. Superb film too.

Really great, will add this together with (hopefully) some surprises in the final batch from Quartet in December!

Nice.
This is a, heavy electronic score by Jarre that I almost like!
It will be interesting to hear it in the complete form.

Fantastic film, but I don't remember a note of the score for some reason. I'll have to go back and give it a go.

An entertaining psychological horror film ruined by a cliche underwhelming denouement, but the music sounds interesting. Still waiting for Jarre's lovely score for lovely movie, Resurrection.

One of my favorite Jarre scores, a true blend of styles that works wonderfully. And that piano theme...heartbreaking!

Very glad to see this revisited. Always thought this was verese territory and I know they never would have gotten around to an expanded release.

If I ever get my interview with Jean Michel Jarre, I want to ask him if he gave his dad any tips on this. Because, as I said earllier, it's one of Jarre sr.'s few successful uses of electronics. But the likelihood is low, since they weren't really on speaking terms at the time. More likely is Boddicker's influence.

I have actually never seen the film but have a great deal about this score. Not very fond of synthesizer based scores but this is definitely up my ladder.

Jacob’s Ladder - complete!

Just placed my order at SAE which was a little cheaper than ordering direct from Quartet.

This movie has been with me for a long time. I remember being in grade 6 or 7 when this came out and I heard all the gruesome details from an older classmate who had snuck in to see it. I remember him describing the Nightmare scene where the “hell doctors” are pushing him in a gurney through a filthy hallway littered with severed feet.

10 year old me was like “I have to see this” and I rented the VHS the moment it came to video.

Vivid memories of seeing this and that ‘shaking figure’ effect that became so much of a horror standard but was fresh here. Some really creepy stuff was left out of the finished film but was in the dvd extras. Not a huge fan of Maurice Jarre’s scores but man I loved this dark creepy stuff.

Yeah I wish they had kept that scene in the hotel room that leads into the guy being blown up in the car. That was great. The shaky head effect was so groundbreaking at the time. There wasn’t anything like that I had seen up till then. It became kinda cliche later in the 90’s music videos and such.

From the old Varese CD I remember this score was pretty unlistenable.

From the samples of the new edition I see it is still pretty unlistenable.

One of the greatest film scores ever. It’s that good. Jarre’s masterpiece.

I’ve long been hoping this would get a re-release purely for the lovely arrangement of Sonny Boy on piano which closes the movie.

A classic.

It's an aquired taste for many who are not keen on synthesizer based scores. GHOST was terrific a wonderful blend of organic with the synthetic sound.
