GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 1 – VON RYAN’S EXPRESS / THE BLUE MAX:
LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET) LLLCD 1544
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $24.98
La-La Land Records and 20th Century Studios proudly present a new collection of classic Jerry Goldsmith scores for film and television composed for 20th Century Fox: GOLDSMITH AT 20th. This collection will feature new authoritative liner notes and unified packaging sure to please avid collectors but also serve as a perfect gateway for listeners experiencing this music for the first time.
Volume 1 is a 2-CD presentation of the composer’s scores from two large-scale period war dramas – 1965’s WWII-era VON RYAN’S EXPRESS, starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard, and directed by Mark Robson, and 1966’s WWI-era THE BLUE MAX, starring George Peppard and James Mason, directed by John Guillermin. Filmmaker Rod Lurie proclaims Goldsmith as “the greatest composer for military films,” and this handsome release more than proves that claim, serving up soaring orchestral might that powerfully enhances these wartime epics.
Both out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The 2-CD re-issue is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, mastered by Daniel Hersch, and is limited to 2000 units.
Look for more “GOLDSMITH AT 20th” releases coming from La-La Land Records next year!

Sounds wonderful! Beautiful pairing.

I suppose the obvious question is, do these new CDs utilize the same restorations as the previous releases, which already sounded very good indeed, or were you afforded another crack at the source materials? (For instance, were you able to bring to bear any of the latest wow-removal technology on "The Blue Max"?).

Whatever, I'm sure the liner notes alone will be worth it.

We joke about it on the Zoom calls because no one really thinks it'll happen, but...here it is it.

The previous LaLa Land Blue Max was a 2 CD set (51:20 + 71:23). This release is the same but adds "Von Ryan"?

I never picked up the improved sounding release of TBM, so I guess this release is for me.

It seems TBM has had more reissues than any other score I can think of.

I was gonna ask that question...is The Blue Max the most reissued Goldsmith score ever?

I’ll have to consider buying this one. I’ve yet to buy any version of The Blue Max (what I’ve heard so far is quite good) and either this or the Tadlow are up for consideration, in fact I was leaning towards the Tadlow until this came along. How does the Tadlow compare to the original recording?

On a different note, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the new name for the studio post-Disney buyout. In spite of the name change, it will always be 20th Century Fox to me.

P.S. As far as other Fox Goldsmith titles being released in this new lineup, we can only hope that last year’s Planet of the Apes boxset is a sign that they might be able to release some of the perpetuity-owned Varese titles, as well as a few non-Goldsmith perpetuity-owned titles like the remaining Herrmann titles from the boxset.

At this point, I think so. Poltergeist II was neck-and-neck with it for a while there. wink

In any case I think it's one that should forever be in print. And the previous LLL master sounded amazing, IMO. My Blue Max of choice; no offense to the Tadlow but it's tough to compete with the original film recording. This is a must-buy for anyone who doesn't already have the score, and you get Von Ryan's Express as a cool extra bonus!

I may even re-buy this just for the new Jeff Bond liner notes.

Yavar - I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. The LLL master is incredible and the music score itself is one of the greatest. In particular, the Retreat 2 cue is always on repeat!

It's the most reissued Goldsmith score that mostly wasn't used in the move, ever.

I think the Tadlow is excellent. I've had all the previous editions of the original but these days I've only been playing the Tadlow. When I want a briefer listen, I enjoy the powerful 16-minute concert suite with Goldsmith conducting the Philharmonia (available on the Goldsmith Conducts Goldsmith album from Silva).

Is the idea that these volumes should replace the old JG AT FOX Box Set ?.
