To celebrate their 20 year anniversary of the Ecoutez le cinéma series, Universal Music France will release various CDs and Vinyls on 15th January. The double CD which includes a book with 100 pages and 36 interviews is rather disappointing as it is just a collection of the tracks which have been released in this series during the last 20 years and nothing else. The track listing for it can be found on FNAC: https://www.fnac.com/a15343442/Michel-Magne-Ecoutez-le-cinema-20-ans-Edition-Limitee-CD-album#int=:NonApplicable|NonApplicable|NonApplicable|15343442|NonApplicable|NonApplicable At the same time three LPs will be released which can be bought individually. The first vinyl disc will have all kinds of chansons (for example Sarde´s "Mon enfance est un rubis" from LA LIBERTÉ EN CROUPE from 1970 which has only been available on a single till now - this theme later cropped up again in a totallY different arrangement in LE CHOC in 1982), the second and probably the most interesting one will have rarities and unreleased tracks (Barry´s LION IN WINTER apparently comes from a rare 1972 recording), the third one various remixes and cover versions. The track listing for the second LP is also on FNAC and I have tried to identify the composers for the tracks - see below. Only in two cases I could not quite identify them. Does anyone - maybe Laurent? - know where "Hold-up a Montréal" and "Deménagements" may come from? I am not aware of any French films with those titles.

Hold-up à Montréal is likely to be from Hold-Up (1985), even though the Music Box CD has no such track title. I had also thought about Serge Franklin´s HOLD-UP from 1985, but I am not sure about it. It could also be something else.

Wow! Passage à l'acte from Desplat, terrific surprise. Is this going to be on CD as well? No, apparently this will be a vinyl only release. The decisions of the label are quite strange.

Hold-up à Montréal is likely to be from Hold-Up (1985), even though the Music Box CD has no such track title. I have now found it: "Hold-up à Montréal" was one episode of the 1970 TV series "Les enquéteurs associés" and was therefore also scored by Francois De Roubaix: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6153632/fullcredits?ref_=tt_cl_sm#cast

The Lion in Winter is probably an outtake from The Concert John Barry album.

The Lion in Winter is probably an outtake from The Concert John Barry album. It is. There's probably more stuff from that sessions that has not been released.

The Lion in Winter is probably an outtake from The Concert John Barry album. It is. There's probably more stuff from that sessions that has not been released. Sources say that in the studio sessions to create the Concert John Barry album, both The Lion In Winter and Zulu were recorded but left off the album. However, I believe I was told that this recording of The Lion In Winter is not from the studio session but a surviving live recording. The problem is, I can't remember who told me that, so I don't know if that's reliable. The brief clip released on-line was from the Eleanor's Arrival cue, so whether that piece is just that cue or a suite that includes that cue, it will be interesting to see. Cheers

As for NEA by Michel Magne, it has never been released before, if I'm correct? One of the few soundtracks he has written in the late 70's. Indeed, nothing has ever been released of Magne´s NÉA on vinyl or CD till now.

"Chinon/Eleanor's Arrival" is perhaps my favorite JB cue. Did the sample not have a chorus?

As for NEA by Michel Magne, it has never been released before, if I'm correct? One of the few soundtracks he has written in the late 70's. Speaking of Michel Magne, it seems that a complete version of his choral symphonic masterpiece LES MISERABLES will appear in January - again as vinyl only release by the French vinyl label Diggers Factory within a new series named "Collection les trésors", although the Play-Time logo can also be seen above in the right corner of the cover: https://www.diggersfactory.com/vinyl/232237/michel-magne-les-miserables-1982-cd The sequencing is quite different to the one of the former LP and CD releases from the 80s and there are three new tracks now (13,14 and 18) with about 6 minutes of additional music. Apparently, this will be a limited edition of only 100 copies - a bit crazy. The Diggers Factory website even offers the chance to listen to Magne´s complete MISERABLES score for everyone who is not familiar with this excellent music.. On the other hand, Amazon France lists a CD of LES MISERABLES for January from Diggers Factory, but this seems to be an error as this label doesn´t produce CDs: https://www.amazon.fr/Mis%C3%A9rables-1982-Michel-Magne/dp/B08NV9SJHW/ref=sr_1_49?dchild=1&fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1606592958&rnid=301164&s=music&sr=1-49 If at all, the CD should come from Play-Time, but on the Play-Time website there is no info at all about such a release. Very confusing.

So there is no trace at all of any Play-Time CD. Are you sure that Play-Time will release them? Now I see the Play Time CD on the Diggers Factory website. You have to scroll all the way down on that page and then one can find the CD with not only 18, but 21 tracks. This means that there will be 6 new tracks and probably about 10-15 minutes of additional music in comparison with the older edition of LES MISERABLES: https://www.diggersfactory.com/vinyl/232237/michel-magne-les-miserables-1982-cd However, track 19-21 can´t be listened to on the Diiggers website and there are also no track timings for them.

If that's the case this release is all the more questionable. Why release just one track of a live(!) recording? Why indeed? Maybe it was the only useable track. Maybe it's the only thing they acquired. Maybe Ecoutez Le Cinema is holding back to get collectors to buy more expensive sets down the line. We simply don't know. I have to say, though, I'm past buying expensive sets for just one track, and I'm not going back to vinyl for just one track either, even if that one track is the concert Lion In Winter. If those studio recordings of The Lion In Winter and Zulu still exist, I hope someone will one day reissue the Concert John Barry album (with a decent cover this time) and include them. And if a full live recording does exist, I hope someone puts that out one day like Bruce's upcoming Lolita My Love. Cheers

I have no turntable so won't be buying the LP that includes 'The Lion In Winter'. Could they not just release the rarities as lossless downloads then I could just add it to my Concert John Barry playlist?. But of course it's not all about me and I Universal France clearly want to maximise earnings from it's property.
