SEASON 1:

A 1981 Stephen J. Cannell series.

I've never seen the series before. I didn't have high hopes for it, given the cheesy-looking super hero and lack of bigger fame for the series, but I gave it a whirl simply because its Mike Post and Pete Carpenter.

I'm glad I did; the series is a big surprise. Well worth it. Well done, good laughs, polar opposite leads who play well off each other, and of course the feel-good scoring of Post/Carpenter.

I very much recommend this weird superhero series. I couldn't find any legitimate purchase links on Youtube, but those who use other sites can no doubt rent it/but it or get the DVD's.

    That's nearly every single cue.

    * = I hear a sudden bad edit jump in the music, suggesting some of it was cut along with probably some scenes.

Ralph: "...and you got to remember: This isn't like in the comic books; I have responsibilities, I have people who depend on me; I can't just be expected to duct into a phone booth and wham, bam, pass the jam."

Starlet: "Mr. Hinkley, do you believe in the stars?" (as in Astrological stuff)
Harry: "Ah, well, Miss Wild, I believe they're up there, yeah..."

Bill: "Okay, what's your spark of genius?"

Bill: "Well, you got my permission any time: whacky smacky."

Ralph: "Doesn't look real happy, Bill."

    * = Ralph says he'll have to "run the gauntlet" to get of the restaurant, yet mere seconds later a switched camera angle show's an EXIT sign and an exit door mere feet from him. All he had to do was go out the back.

Couple odd things in this episode.

Bill says Ralph told him he could see things when touching objects. This hasn't happened yet, so this either means this episode was aired out-of-order or they're speaking about off-screen adventures.

Ralph's girlfriend's mother says Ralph's full name, but each time a jet engine revving covers up the last name as if it was a secret, however we learned it in the pilot. Maybe it was meant to be secret but they lost track. Who knows.

Ralph: "Where am I supposed to put this thing? The suit doesn't have any pockets, you know."
    Bill: "Be creative."

"You know, there ain't nothin' wrong with your grammar that couldn't be fixed by learning English, you know?"

A favorite of mine when it aired. I would be first in line for a Post/Carpenter music release from this show. Disappointed the DVD release did not include all of the music as aired.

Ralph's surname in the pilot/premiere was "Hinkley". After the attempted assassination of President Reagan by John Hinckley, Jr., the "Hinkley" name was edited out, covered over with sound effects, or later dubbed over with a change to "Hanley" for the remainder of the short season (with the word "Hanley" even appearing on Ralph's classroom door in the final episode of the season, if memory serves).

For the premiere of the next season, and all episodes thereafter, Ralph got his original surname back.

I remember watching this on UK TV back in the day.
I think it was shoved into the Saturday morning kids slot.
Very enjoyable series. Fun and offbeat.
The actors were great. William Katt is likeable in everything I've seen him in.
And the music is good and the main theme song is ace, believe it or not wink

If you have Amazon Prime (in the UK you get the complete series as part of your subscription - great for London area Stephen J. Cannell fans since it doesn't seem to have turned up in the London region. (And yet Londoners got Me And The Chimp, Nanny And The Professor and Dusty's Trail. But no Slegde Hammer!)

I remember absolutely nothing about this series except Starlog magazine banging on about it. I definitely don't remember any screening at all in the UK. Believe me, if I'd noticed it I would have watched it. Just right up my street, but sadly nothing.

Yes I remember seeing this on UK Television on Saturday mornings on ITV - just before midday.
Not sure why? I would have thought this was good enough to have had a better slot.
Always puzzles me as to why more original Mike Post/Pete Carpenter recordings are not available.
The silva screen recordings are very welcome - but nothing is quite the same as the original artists version.
Reckon I would be walking on air!

    Regards

Any noted above those ITV regions DID take it dumped on Saturday mornings... On Serenade Radio's Saturday afternoon show of TV music (5pm), (hosted by a former Central* announcer) played this (From Jerrold (Dallas... Megaforce) Immel.)
    - which never shown in the London area...

*For non-UK posters; Central used to bring ITV to the Midlands.

Absolutely loved this show growing up -- never missed it.

Of course, being the early 1980s, it was rare for popular songs to be licensed for American television, so Joey Scarbury (singer of the highly-underrated theme song) would often provide cover versions.

I distinctly remember one episode had Joey covering Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction," where Ralph had to stop a nuclear missile and prevent World War III. :^)

I like how they have tried to include realism in Bill's job but here they just suspend it to drive this plot forward. Bill still requisitioned the money properly, so the serial numbers are logged and there is a paper trial. Would end things pretty quickly.

LOL, Bill flashes the kid his badge to tell him who is he is.

  • 1:47 in. That first minute and twenty or so seconds is an odd combo for me: the string work sounds like Gil Melle from "The Last Chase" and part of the theme is the "Star Trek" fanfare.
  • 4:40 in. Didn't write enough for your episode? No problem, just have Post/Carpenter do their thing for over a minute for nothing but aerial shots.

I hate the cliched plot, not even done well, and I hate the forced ending which just isn't buyable. This may be one of the worst episodes of the series. Oh well, at least we got some terrific scoring from Post/Carpenter.

In this revealing episode, we learn some stuff about the aliens and suit, including the suit is fireproof and bullet proof even when Ralph is not wearing it, so that means all this time Bill saying the suit is useless without Ralph, is not entirely true. Now we know Bill or anybody else can put it on and be bullet proof and fire proof (at least the suit, that is).

I must say I am deeply disappointed by the inside of the ship and the aliens.

Ralph: "You've gone commodore crazy; you wanna take a shower, you commodore the bathroom. You wanna watch somethin' on TV, you commodore the television set. You want to get some relish, Bill? Why don't you go out there and commodore the weinerwagon; maybe if you flip your badge they'll give you a free cola."

    Football talk. Fictional football talk.
    MEGA SKIP!

Hands down the worst episode of the series, and I haven't finished the series yet. I'll eat my words if there is a worse one, but I doubt it!

Connie Sellecca had a kid in real life last season and hell if you'd know! She looks better than most women who never had a kid!

Bill: "Open in the name of the law."
Counselor: "Do they still say that?"
    Ralph: "I guess so."

    Bbbooooorrriiinnnggg.
The only good thing about this episode, discounting Post/Carpenter of course, is all that cleavage action, but we don't get that until about 35:00 minutes in. Thankfully that includes Connie.

It's also the weakest score in the series thus far. If I were compiling a set of scoring from season three, I'd only include the cues with asterixis aside them.

These last two episodes Ralph has noticeably gotten better at flying.

Bill: "Wait a minute, you got the suit on and you want me to go in first?"

Bill: "This whole scenario has taken a sharp left into the Twilight Zone."

Oh, good God. A promising mystery kidnap episode just went south so fast. And for no discernable reason; no plot relevancy, doesn't drive anything, and appears to be for nothing more than a short very mediocre fight at the end. There is so much this show could do with the premise of a real life superhero and F.B.I. partner, but yet they make this???

The "vibes" thing has sure changed. Began as something you had on or with you, to anything the person owns, and the vibes used to fade and not be readable, but in here at one point he gets vibes like a day later.

I've come to realize I really enjoy character actor Dennis Lipscomb. He was also briefly in "Wiseguy", as I recall. He sadly died in 2014.

"More to the point, Mr. Maxwell, I am tlking about the scientific manufacturing of human beings."
Bill: Oh-OOOHHHHHH, yeah right, okay, well," chuckles, "Yeah, I got it now. Yeah, sure. You're nuts, that's all. You had me goin' there for a minute, but ah, it's real simple, not too complicated: you're nuts. It happens, you know, you fall off the Reality Wagon, lose a little traction and you wind up in Mexico playin' Frankenstein."

  • 37:14 in.
  • 41:36 in.
  • 47:25 in.

Oh, I love the Bill vs. his boss stuff. I could have eaten up a whole episode of that.
Unfortunately, it doesn't make sense his boss isn't still on Bill about the two-way communicator. We saw Counselor remember seconds after Ralph would use his suggestive power on his and other times people only forgot things after the suggestion; everything else prior is remembered, so Bill's boss should recall everything.

Ralph: "You have the most incredible way of reducing almost anything to its most trivial metaphor. For instance: Einstein was running numbers. Michelangelo was doing ceilings."

Carlisle: "You don't learn Spanish from this! How stupid do you think I am?!"
Bill: "Well, I don't know, sir."

Bill: "We got a real card-carrying hotdog here."

    Out-of-context quote...
Counselor: "I am just about ready for you guys..."

    "Thirty Seconds Over Little Tokyo"

    Highlights:
  • 1:47 in.

  • 22:21 in. I think that's re-used truck hitting him footage.
  • 26:38 in. More after the commercial break.
  • 37:08 in. Including a waterchime. Some of this cue sounds like it's by John Parker.
  • 44:10 in.

Bill was just so incredibly inconsiderate, even for Bill. A low point for his character, what he did to Ralph.

Okay, so Ralph can catch a zillion pounds of spaceship, fly at mock six, survive handling nuclear rods, is bullet proof and fire resistant, but we're supposed to buy for a New York second he's worried about some ninjas???

"Well, I hope you all like sushi, because I've ordered a ton of it."
Bill: "Ooohhh, yeah, the little dead fish; yeah I love that, cant' get enough of that."

Ralph: "What I wanted to say is: I have a friend of mine who's a real jerk and has the timing of a candygram at a funeral."

I wanted Bill to seriously bring down some whacky smacky with the grown nerds. I'm getting pissed off just listening to the nerd-speak. Good lord, no wonder season three was half as long and got the show cancelled.

Bill: "...all these kids got brain rot today."

    "It's Only Rock and Roll"

  • 41:44 in.
  • 43:55 in.

They must have known of bad this episode was. The bikers outside the safe house are in the night, and Bill in the house watching them has broad daylight shinning in the window behind him. Why bother dealing with that when making this crap, I guess.

I did more skipping here than fifty little school girls during recess.

    "Desperado"
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMJUxPDgod4

    Highlights:
  • 1:47 in. Almost five minutes long.

  • 18:05/19:03 in.

  • 32:31 in.
  • 34:38 in.
  • 36:52 in.
  • 37:34 in.

    Boring.

And somebody thought it would be a good idea to do an hour of horse theft for a superhero series.

    (NTM: 10:15)

Bill: "You yanked me all the way out here to I could bring ya the jammies so we could dig up sick gofers or some darn fool thing."

"Vanity, Says the Preacher" (series finale)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXPbLbkmOng

    Highlights:
  • 4:11 in.
  • 6:25 in.
  • 10:06 in.
  • 10:59 in.
  • 29:33 in.
  • 31:40 in.
  • 35:33 in. More after the commercial break.

I must say, all these people are taking that U.F.O. in stride.

Bill: "Well, kid, for once we agree on how to make lemonade."

And that's that -- the show was canned thirteen episodes into the third season.

But it's not over -- the following days there is more to cover: from the revival attempt, remake pilots, and more! You're one-stop source for what you wanted to know about it trying to come back, without having to read a bunch of articles across multiple websites; lucky you -- whacky smacky free.

    REVIVAL ATTEMPT:

Noted inaccurately as a season three episode on IMDb.

    "The Greatest American Heroine"
Three years later in 1986 a revival pilot was attempted, wherein the cast came back and the green guys decided the suit should go to somebody else since Ralph's identity was now public. Surprising it took so many years for a superhero who neither wore a mask nor disguised his voice.

Trivia on IMDb says this was originally intended as a come-back for the series, but the actor who portrayed Ralph was too busy with the Perry Mason TV movies and so it was re-done to introduce a new lead, which wasn't liked. Info' online says it was added to syndication, indicating it may not have aired as a special but as a defacto re-run.

Mike Post and Pete Carpenter were back for the score and the song was kept, as well as the instrumental end credits music. It was one of the last projects Carpenter worked on with Post before passing away about a year later.

https://www.veoh.com/watch/v3660048z8F72p2a (very mediocre quality; no other loads anywhere else to link to)

    Highlights:
  • 1:43 in.
  • 2:26 in.
  • 8:28 in.
  • 19:31 in.
  • 29:22 in.
  • 40:38 in.

Over-all faithful to the series, even in remembering passed jokes like Ralph breaking Bill's hand twice in the first season, and loosing the instruction book twice. And thankfully most of it is spent on the original cast, saving less than half of it for the new female lead, who is irritating and not engaging at all. When the smart little girl is more fun to watch and listen to than the new lead of the show, you know you got a problem.

Counselor: "Oh, well, I remember when Ralph was chosen, it was because you guys were looking for someone with a strong moral character, a healthy idealism, altruistic nature and true integrity, right?"
    (pauses)
    "Not Bill."

Ralph: "Ah-ah, excuse me! Ahum, about the instruction book."
Alien Leader: "We've given you two already, Mr. Hinkley; surely you haven't lost it again."
Ralph: "Ahhh, no. No. Of course not. But ah--"
Alien Leader: "Good, because we have no more to give."

    Bill: "You picked a skirt!"

Holly: "That's what you're gonna appreciate about me, Bill: I'm never in a bad mood."
